If you want the sci-fi dread and survival pressure of End of Abyss, start with Dead Space (2023) for grotesque creatures and equipment upgrades, Alien: Isolation for the fear of being hunted aboard a space station, or Signalis for psychological, dystopian horror. They are neighboring experiences, not direct substitutes: each takes a different approach to perspective, exploration, combat, and fear.

What makes End of Abyss distinctive?

End of Abyss follows a character descending into a sprawling complex, where fighting threats, upgrading gear, and using a scanner and unlocked tools help reopen routes to hidden areas. The developer describes it as a top-down metroidvania with action-horror elements. That combination matters when choosing a similar game: a match might share the science-fiction setting and survival pressure without sharing its viewpoint or map structure. PlayStation’s official listing outlines the descent, tools, upgrades, and exploration, while Xbox Wire’s June 19, 2026 interview describes the game’s design. Xbox Wire reported an October 1, 2026 launch on Xbox Series X|S; Section 9 Interactive identifies Epic Games Publishing as publisher. Which games are the best matches?

Dead Space (2023): for creature-filled sci-fi survival horror

Choose Dead Space if you want the closest match in the broad combination of hostile alien threats, enclosed science-fiction spaces, and gear progression. Its abandoned-starship setting and grotesque enemies make it a natural pick for players seeking action-oriented sci-fi horror; its equipment upgrades add a survival-planning element. Space.com’s February 23, 2026 sci-fi games feature discusses the remake’s atmosphere, alien abominations, and gear upgrades.

The main difference is how you move through the fear: Dead Space is a third-person survival-horror game, not a top-down metroidvania. Pick it for combat and equipment progression, rather than for End of Abyss’s viewpoint or interconnected exploration.

Cronos - PlayStation 5
  • Cronos: The New Dawn is a brutal third-person survival horror where you fight for the future by salvaging the past. Burn monsters before they merge. Extract souls from the living. Adapt or die.
  • Set in a grim world where Eastern European brutalism meets retro-futurist technology, Cronos: The New Dawn lets you experience a gripping story that straddles the line between past and future.
  • The enemies you’ll encounter are nightmarish creatures, born from the remnants of humanity – defeating them will require you to make full use of your arsenal.
  • The creatures you kill won’t stay dead for long. Fallen enemies can be absorbed by others - through a grotesque process called Merging - to become faster, tougher, and far deadlier.
  • This physical edition of Cronos: The New Dawn comes with bonus in-game content and a set of collectible stickers.

Alien: Isolation: for a relentless threat and station-bound tension

Choose Alien: Isolation when the most appealing part of sci-fi horror is facing a dangerous alien in a space-station setting. It is a strong atmosphere-and-threat comparison, built around tension rather than a promise of matching combat or exploration. GamesRadar+’s 2026 sci-fi games feature identifies the game as science fiction and gives its release date as October 7, 2014.

That makes it a different kind of survival pressure from a game centered on fighting threats and upgrading tools: choose it for the unease of a hostile presence, not for a similar action-horror or metroidvania structure.

Signalis: for psychological, dystopian sci-fi horror

Choose Signalis if you want science-fiction horror that leans toward psychological dread and questions of artificial personhood. Its dystopian tone and deep-space horror lineage make it a thematic match rather than a mechanical one. The Science Fiction Research Association Review’s 2025 discussion addresses those themes and influences.

Its presentation and mechanics differ from End of Abyss. Go in for a more psychological kind of unease, not an equivalent top-down action-metroidvania experience.

Tension around a dangerous alien Alien: Isolation Hostile-alien threat in a space-station setting Atmosphere is the point of comparison; matching combat and exploration are not established

How close should you expect the match to be?

None of these recommendations is established as a direct gameplay equivalent to End of Abyss. The clearest way to choose is by the quality you want to carry over: Dead Space for action and upgrades, Alien: Isolation for a threatening presence and sustained tension, or Signalis for psychological science-fiction horror. Developer Anton Ottval described inspirations for End of Abyss to Xbox Wire as “We like the same kind of things, and it’s very much the things we grew up with, like the Alien movies, ‘The Thing.’” The interview helps explain the horror lineage, but it does not make these games identical in structure or play.
