For competitive Fortnite, start with a 16:9 display and treat Epic’s recommended PC specifications as a baseline—not a guarantee of 144, 240, or 360 FPS. Epic publishes minimum, recommended, and Epic Quality Presets tiers, but none specifies a competitive frame-rate target. Actual performance varies with the PC, resolution, graphics settings, game version, and match conditions.
What PC specs do you need for competitive Fortnite?
Epic’s published tiers help establish whether a PC meets Fortnite’s listed requirements and what hardware Epic associates with its higher-quality preset. They do not identify an ideal current CPU or graphics card for a particular competitive frame rate. For a proposed 144, 240, or 360 FPS build, look for current benchmarks that match the game version, resolution, settings, and representative match workload before choosing model-specific parts.

| Epic tier | Processor | Graphics | Memory | Storage | Operating system |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | Intel Core i3-3225 at 3.3 GHz | Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 | 8 GB RAM | Not stated | Windows 10 64-bit; Epic lists Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2 |
| Recommended | Intel Core i5-7300U at 3.5 GHz, AMD Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent | NVIDIA GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU; 2 GB VRAM | 16 GB RAM or higher | NVMe SSD | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
| Epic Quality Presets | Intel Core i7-8700, AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, or equivalent | NVIDIA RTX 3070, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, or equivalent; 8 GB VRAM or higher | 16 GB RAM or higher | NVMe SSD | Windows 10/11 64-bit |
These are Epic’s stated tiers, not results from a matched competitive-FPS test. Epic cautions that a PC meeting only the minimum requirements may not run the game at its highest settings; reducing graphics settings and closing background applications may help. See Epic’s Fortnite PC system requirements.

Memory
Use 16 GB RAM or higher as the mainstream planning point because that is what Epic lists in both its recommended and Epic Quality Presets tiers. The minimum tier lists 8 GB. RAM capacity alone does not establish a particular frame rate, so confirm that the motherboard supports the chosen memory and that the system is configured to use it.

Storage
Epic lists an NVMe SSD for its recommended and Epic Quality Presets tiers. Its low-FPS guidance also says an SSD can help older systems fit Fortnite in memory and reduce hitches and stutters; that is not a promise of a specific FPS increase. Epic says removing high-resolution textures saves over 15 GB of storage and may help computer performance. Check Epic’s low-frame-rate troubleshooting guidance and its instructions for enabling Performance Mode and managing high-resolution textures.
What graphics card do you need, and can this PC get 240 FPS?
Epic’s recommended tier names a GTX 960 or R9 280-class DirectX 11 GPU with 2 GB VRAM; the Epic Quality Presets tier names an RTX 3070 or RX 6700 XT-class GPU with at least 8 GB VRAM. Those examples describe Epic’s published tiers, not a tested shopping recommendation for competitive settings. The page does not say that either tier will deliver 240 FPS—or any other specific frame rate.

Before buying for a target such as 240 FPS, find reproducible benchmarks for the exact current game version and a comparable setup: resolution, settings, CPU, GPU, memory configuration, and match conditions. The supplied tiers alone cannot establish which current graphics card is best value or whether the CPU or GPU will limit performance in a given configuration.
Does Performance Mode improve FPS?
Epic says Performance Mode may raise FPS. Its support examples are two particular laptops tested in a standard Squads match at 720p: an i5-8265U system with 8 GB RAM and Intel UHD 620 graphics went from 24 FPS to 61 FPS; an AMD A10-5745M system with 6 GB RAM and Radeon HD 8610G graphics went from 18 FPS to 45 FPS. These are illustrative results published by Epic, not controlled benchmarks of current gaming desktops or a guarantee for another PC.

To enable it, open Fortnite’s Video settings, select Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity, choose Apply, and restart the game. Epic recommends low quality presets and 100% 3D Resolution as a starting point when troubleshooting graphics, then adjusting for a suitable balance. If the PC has a dedicated graphics card, check that Fortnite is using it. See Epic’s graphics-issue guidance.
What display and settings matter in competitive modes?
Epic says Ranked, tournaments, and similar competitive modes are restricted to a 16:9 aspect ratio. Choose a 16:9 monitor and decide on the resolution and refresh rate before planning a build; the published PC requirements do not specify the frame rate a system can sustain at any particular display resolution or refresh rate. Lower graphics settings and 100% 3D Resolution are Epic’s suggested troubleshooting starting point, not a universal best setting for every player.

What should you check before buying or troubleshooting?
- Match the intended display’s 16:9 aspect ratio, resolution, and refresh rate to the use case.
- Compare the whole PC with Epic’s stated processor, graphics, memory, storage, and Windows requirements; confirm the motherboard, power supply, cooling, and component compatibility with the specific parts you choose.
- Use Epic’s recommended tier as a baseline, not an FPS promise. Seek current, comparable benchmarks for any exact high-FPS target.
- If frame pacing is poor on older hardware, consider Performance Mode, an SSD, and closing unnecessary background applications; results depend on the system.
A tournament access error is a separate issue from rendering performance. If an event requiring Account Level 350 or higher reports “System requirements failed,” Epic says TPM and Secure Boot may be involved. Check whether the CPU meets Fortnite’s recommended system requirements and consult the PC maker’s official BIOS guidance. These eligibility checks do not indicate how many frames the PC can render. See Epic’s competitive-event system-requirements guidance.

Epic’s PC requirements page says Fortnite is designed to run on a wide range of PC hardware. That broad compatibility does not make its listed tiers performance guarantees: use the specifications to check eligibility and baseline capability, and use appropriately matched benchmarks to judge a competitive frame-rate target.
