What makes a game like Gears of War?
“Games like Gears of War” can mean two different things: a campaign you can play cooperatively, or the specific cover-based combat loop. Those are not interchangeable. A third-person co-op shooter may suit a group looking for a story and character progression without reproducing Gears’ approach to cover.

- Cover combat: Is using and moving between cover a stated part of the combat, or is the similarity mainly the third-person shooting?
- Campaign co-op: Does the story support co-op, and how many players can join?
- Play format: Is co-op online, split-screen, or both?
- Progression: Are class skills, loot, or gear customization central to the experience?
The official listings available for the games below do not answer every point for every title. The comparison is therefore about what those listings actually establish, not a full genre ranking.
Best available co-op story-shooter alternative: OUTRIDERS
OUTRIDERS is worth considering if the main draw is playing a shooter story with friends and developing a character. PlayStation describes its story as playable solo or with friends and highlights class skill trees and gear modification. Xbox lists it as a 1–3 player co-op RPG shooter. PlayStation’s OUTRIDERS page and Xbox’s OUTRIDERS listing establish those features.

Platform and online-play note
PlayStation lists OUTRIDERS for PS4 and PS5. The Xbox listing says online multiplayer on console requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer, sold separately. That requirement is specific to the cited Xbox listing; it should not be assumed to describe every platform or edition.

Closest cover-combat match: Gears of War: E-Day
If you want Gears-style cover combat specifically, the most direct documented choice is another Gears game rather than an unrelated shooter. Xbox’s E-Day product listing says the origin-story campaign can be played solo, in split-screen co-op, or online with up to four players, and identifies cover-based combat as part of the game.
As of October 4, 2026, Gears of War: E-Day is not yet released: Xbox lists October 6, 2026, for Xbox Series X|S and PC. That makes it a near-future option, not a game available to play on the article’s date. Xbox Wire notes that online campaign co-op requires a Game Pass subscription that includes online multiplayer, sold separately. Xbox Wire’s release-date announcement covers that online requirement.

For a local couch co-op plan, E-Day is the only one of these two listings that explicitly confirms split-screen.
