If you like Last War: Survival for its base upgrades, resource management, heroes, and alliances, start with Whiteout Survival: it keeps the survival-city-building loop but shifts the crisis to a frozen frontier. For another zombie setting, consider State of Survival: Zombie War or Last Shelter: Survival. If shared-map tactics and real-time troop movement matter more than the apocalypse theme, Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade is the clearest change of pace. These are matches by advertised features, not hands-on rankings; none of the descriptions reviewed establishes that the alternatives reproduce Last War’s lane-dodging action mini-game.
What makes a game feel like Last War?
Last War: Survival combines two kinds of play that are easy to confuse when searching for alternatives. Its current Google Play description presents short-session action—dodging and fighting zombie waves—alongside longer-term strategy: developing a base and army, recruiting heroes from three military branches, and joining alliances. Google Play categorizes it as Strategy and 4X, lists Android and Windows availability, and says the listing was updated September 22, 2026. The listing describes the game as free-to-play and notes that some items, including random items, can be purchased for real money.

That blend gives “games like Last War” at least three meanings. You might want the settlement loop of upgrading buildings, managing resources, researching technology, and growing a force. You might want zombies and a shelter under pressure. Or you might be looking for quick action mixed into a strategy game. The available official descriptions support comparisons on the first two dimensions and on alliances or competition; they do not establish that any of the four alternatives has the same lane-dodging mini-game. Choose based on the part you actually want to keep.
At a glance: which alternative fits your priorities?
| Game | Best fit | Shared with Last War | Main change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whiteout Survival | Survival-city building and alliance play | Settlement development, heroes, resource management, alliances, technology, and competition | Glacial-apocalypse setting and survivor jobs replace the zombie framing |
| State of Survival: Zombie War | Keeping the zombie theme while developing a shelter and troops | Shelter and building upgrades, resources, research, heroes, alliances, and combat against zombies | Its official description emphasizes troop training, zombie defense, and cross-server battles |
| Last Shelter: Survival | Zombie city building with defense and differentiated armies | Facility upgrades, research and development, heroes, unit training, and alliance conflict | It specifically describes tower defense and three unit categories |
| Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade | Shared-map tactics, exploration, and coordinated troop movement | Heroes or commanders, alliances, player competition, and long-term strategy | Historical civilizations and real-time map play replace survival-city management |
The overlap and differences in this table come from the games’ official store descriptions. It is a feature-based guide, not a claim that one game is objectively superior or a substitute for trying a game yourself.

Whiteout Survival: closest to the survival-city-building loop
What carries over
Whiteout Survival is the most direct fit if the appeal of Last War is building up a settlement and coordinating its long-term growth. Its official Google Play description calls it “a survival strategy game to center on a glacial apocalypse theme.” It describes managing resources, developing technology, assigning jobs to survivors, recruiting heroes, forming alliances, and competing with other players. The listing categorizes it as Strategy and 4X and discloses in-app purchases.
The useful similarity is not the scenery but the management structure: a threatened community, development choices, characters with strategic roles, and a social layer. Survivor jobs add a settlement-management angle to that structure. If your favorite part of Last War is deciding how to grow a base and sustain it, rather than fighting a particular kind of enemy, the change from zombies to extreme cold need not be a drawback.
What changes
The crisis is a glacial apocalypse, not a zombie outbreak. The listing highlights survivor roles, city management, heroes, technology, and alliances; it does not establish that the game reproduces Last War’s short lane-dodging action. Treat it as a switch to a different survival setting with overlapping strategy themes, not as a reskin or a guaranteed match for every activity in Last War.
Pick it when the priority order is roughly: survival settlement first, heroes and alliance activity next, zombie theme or lane action optional. If keeping the undead setting is essential, the two zombie-focused options below are more natural starting points.

State of Survival: Zombie War: a zombie setting with shelter and troop development
Why it may suit Last War players
State of Survival: Zombie War keeps the zombie-apocalypse premise while its official store description lays out a persistent strategy loop: upgrade a shelter and other buildings, gather resources, research technology, train troops, recruit heroes, and join alliances. It also describes zombie defense and cross-server battles. That combination makes it a reasonable candidate for someone who wants both an infected-world setting and a base that develops over time.
Its overlap with Last War is therefore strongest at the setting and progression levels. The store description points to a shelter, an army, research, heroes, and social competition—not to a matching action mini-game. If quick runs through zombie lanes are the main attraction for you, the listing does not provide evidence that this game offers the same kind of play.
What to check before choosing it
The listing reviewed is titled State of Survival: Zombie War. Storefront names and regional versions can differ, so check that the title, publisher, and supported platform shown in your local store match the game you intend to install. This is especially useful if you arrive through an older recommendation that uses a shortened title or an edition name from another region.

The listing’s feature description is evidence of what the publisher advertises, not a measure of how much time or spending is needed to compete. It confirms in-app purchases as a monetization disclosure, but that alone does not show whether spending is optional for your goals, how purchases affect particular modes, or how its economy compares with Last War. If those questions matter, inspect the current local listing and in-game purchase and event details before committing to a long-term account.

Last Shelter: Survival: zombie city building with defense systems
Its distinctive advertised features
Last Shelter: Survival also centers on a zombie-ravaged world, but its official listing distinguishes it with tower defense and three unit categories. It describes building a wasteland empire, upgrading facilities, conducting research and development, training warriors and survivors, recruiting heroes, and taking part in alliance warfare. For a Last War player who wants a base-and-army progression loop in a zombie setting, those advertised systems make it worth comparing with State of Survival.
The most useful question is whether defense and army composition sound more appealing than a general shelter-building match. The listing specifically calls out defense towers and differentiated units, so those are the clearest reasons to investigate this option. It does not provide enough evidence to rank the depth or balance of those systems against those of other games.
Listing details and limits
The official listing identifies Long Tech Network Limited and reports an update on September 9, 2026. Those details can help confirm that you have found the intended title, particularly when searching across storefronts. Store descriptions are not hands-on evaluations, however: they do not settle how the game feels in play, how active a particular server is, or how much pressure a player faces to spend.

A different kind of strategy match
Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade is the outlier in this group. Its official description shifts from survival settlements to historical civilizations and a shared world map. It advertises 15 civilizations, real-time battles, exploration, unrestricted troop movement, alliance coordination, and historical commanders with RPG-style talent trees. It also describes a seamless world map and allied troop support.

Those features make it relevant if the part of Last War you value most is the alliance strategy and competition rather than zombies, survival management, or the setting of a besieged city. Its map focus changes the strategic question: instead of matching a frozen or infected settlement, you are looking at exploration, troop movement, and coordination with other players. The advertised commanders and talent trees offer a character-progression connection, but the overall setting and map-level emphasis are different.
Who should skip it
If your search specifically means “another zombie city builder,” this is not the closest match. The official description presents historical civilizations rather than a zombie or frozen survival crisis, and its distinguishing features are map exploration and troop movement. Consider it when you want to trade setting similarity for a more explicitly map-oriented strategy experience.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose by setting, strategy, and social play
1. Decide which world you want to spend time in
- Zombie apocalypse: Last War, State of Survival: Zombie War, and Last Shelter: Survival share the undead backdrop in their descriptions.
- Frozen survival: Whiteout Survival moves the crisis to a glacial frontier.
- Historical civilizations: Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade moves away from disaster survival and toward civilization-based map strategy.
A matching theme can make a game feel familiar, but it does not guarantee a matching activity loop. Within the zombie choices, compare the advertised emphasis—shelter and cross-server battles in State of Survival, or tower defense and three unit types in Last Shelter—rather than choosing on setting alone.

- Base and resource management: Whiteout Survival, State of Survival, and Last Shelter all describe settlement or facility development. The former highlights survivor jobs; the latter two describe shelter or facility upgrades and troop development.
- Research and technology: Whiteout Survival mentions technology development; State of Survival mentions technology research; Last Shelter describes R&D. These are advertised as progression features, not proof that their research systems work identically.
- Shared-map movement: Rise of Kingdoms most clearly emphasizes a seamless map, exploration, real-time battles, and unrestricted troop movement.
- Short action sessions: Last War explicitly advertises dodging and fighting zombie waves. The official descriptions available for these alternatives do not establish an equivalent lane-action mode.
3. Think about the social commitment
Alliance play appears in the official descriptions for Last War and all four candidates. That broad overlap is useful, but it does not mean the social experience is interchangeable. Rise of Kingdoms explicitly advertises allied troop support on a shared map; State of Survival mentions cross-server battles; the other listings describe alliances or alliance warfare and player competition. If coordination is central to your enjoyment, look for a group that matches your time zone, activity level, and preferred pace after installing. The descriptions do not establish how active any particular server or alliance community is.
Best Value
- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.

Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
What to know about in-app purchases
The official store descriptions disclose in-app purchases for the games in this comparison. Last War’s Google Play listing says the game is free-to-play and that some items can be bought for real money, including random items. The candidate listings likewise disclose in-app purchases. These statements establish that purchases are offered; they do not show how much a player needs to spend to progress, whether spending is required for a particular competitive goal, or whether one game is fairer than another.
That distinction matters if your real search is for a city builder without microtransactions. A reader in an r/iosgaming discussion phrased the question as wanting “City building and resource management games like Last War, Whiteout Survival, Kingshot, etc. but without micro transactions?” The post describes one person’s preferences—not a representative survey—but it captures a real decision: enjoying base upgrades and technology research while disliking pay-to-win pressure. None of the store disclosures here supports labeling one of these alternatives as free of microtransactions or comparatively fair.
Before investing time, use a simple check rather than relying on a “generous” or “less pay-to-win” claim:
- Check your own storefront listing. Confirm the title and region, then read the current purchase disclosures. Offers and listing details may vary by storefront and can change.
- Set your goal first. Casual base growth, alliance participation, and high-level player competition can create different expectations. A description of in-app purchases does not explain the cost of each goal.
- Inspect the game before making a recurring commitment. Review purchase menus and limited-time offers in the game, and decide whether you are comfortable with what is offered. Do not treat a free-to-play label as a promise that all competitive progress is equally accessible without spending.
- Separate anecdotes from evidence. An App Store reviewer has described feeling outspent in competition in Last War, but that is one player’s account, not evidence of how common that experience is or how the alternatives compare.
Alternatives that need more verification
A 2026 third-party alternatives roundup also names Clash of Clans and Top War. It characterizes Top War as a merge-and-battle hybrid, but a current official listing was not available for a detailed feature comparison here. That is not enough to responsibly rank either title against Last War on the specific criteria above. Treat them as additional search terms if you are exploring broadly, then verify current features, platform availability, and purchase disclosures in the official store for your region.
Claims that a game is more polished, more generous, or less pay-to-win are judgments, not established comparative facts. A roundup can point you toward a title, but those descriptions alone cannot answer how its current version plays or how its monetization feels over time.
A practical shortlist
- Choose Whiteout Survival if survival-city management, heroes, technology, and alliances matter more than retaining zombies.
- Try State of Survival: Zombie War if you want the zombie premise with shelter upgrades, troop training, research, and cross-server battles in the advertised mix.
- Look at Last Shelter: Survival if tower defense, facility development, differentiated unit categories, and alliance conflict are the features that catch your eye.
- Consider Rise of Kingdoms: Lost Crusade if shared-map exploration, real-time troop movement, and allied coordination sound better than survival-city building.
These are conditional matches based on official descriptions, not a quality ranking. The right choice depends on which piece of Last War you want to keep—and on whether the candidate’s current purchase model and community suit the way you play.
