Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the closest conventional kart-racing alternative in this group, with split-screen racing and online competition. For more varied vehicle-based modes on Switch 2, look at Kirby Air Riders. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is an older Switch kart racer with same-system multiplayer. The right pick depends on your console, how many people are playing, how they connect, and whether you want traditional kart racing or a broader vehicle-action game.
At a glance: multiplayer limits and platform fit
Player counts describe different kinds of play. Same-system play means multiple people share one console; local wireless connects nearby systems; online play uses an internet connection. Those categories should not be treated as interchangeable. A game may support a large online gathering but a smaller race, or support several local players without offering the same number over local wireless.

Kirby Air Riders’ Paddock figure is especially easy to misread. Up to 32 people can gather in that online lobby, but Nintendo does not present that number as the size of one race. The City Trial local-wireless figure is a separate, mode-specific limit. Always match the player count to the exact mode your group plans to use.

Which game is the closest match to Mario Kart World?
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds for familiar kart-racing structure
If you want another character-driven kart racer, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is the most direct fit among these options. Nintendo describes local split-screen in Grand Prix and Race Park, and online competition in World Match. That gives a group clear conventional race formats for both a shared screen and internet play.
The product listing identifies 23 Sonic characters, 24 tracks, and 15 CrossWorlds. Its customization system includes 45 vehicles and 70 gadgets. Those figures help explain the game’s breadth without establishing that it handles better or has more active players than any competitor. They are catalog specifications, not independent performance measurements.
Nintendo lists SEGA as publisher and September 25, 2025, as the Nintendo Switch release date. The product page says the Switch version is supported on Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. That wording matters when you are shopping: a Switch 2 owner should still check whether the listing is for the Nintendo Switch edition, a particular bundle, or another edition available in the region.
Its listed multiplayer ceilings are up to four on one system, two to eight over local wireless, and two to 12 online. The local-wireless range is useful for nearby groups with multiple consoles, while the online ceiling is half Mario Kart World’s listed 24-player maximum. If your group routinely wants more than 12 people in one online activity, that difference may determine the purchase.
Choose it when: the priority is recognizable character-based kart racing, split-screen sessions, Race Park, and online World Match. Look elsewhere when: you specifically need Mario Kart World’s 24-player online ceiling, or you are buying solely for Switch 2-exclusive software rather than a Switch game supported on that system.
Kirby Air Riders for a broader vehicle-action game
Kirby Air Riders is worth considering if your group wants variety in how it plays, rather than a direct substitute built around conventional kart races. Nintendo names three multiplayer formats: Air Ride, Top Ride, and City Trial. The mix makes it a different kind of recommendation from a straightforward kart racer.
Its online Paddock can gather up to 32 players, but that number describes the lobby, not a single race. Do not advertise it to your group as a 32-player race without checking the specific event rules. For City Trial, Nintendo lists local wireless matches of up to eight players. Same-system play is listed for up to four. Those capacities belong to different arrangements and should be planned separately.

This is a Switch 2 game. It makes most sense for Switch 2 groups who are interested in multiple vehicle-action modes and an online gathering space. It is a weaker fit for someone who wants every session to look like a traditional lap-based kart race. The official feature list supports the distinction between vehicle action and kart-racing imitation; it does not provide comparative handling, matchmaking, accessibility, or enjoyment scores.
Choose it when: your group values changing formats, wants Air Ride, Top Ride, and City Trial available in one game, or expects to use a large online Paddock. Plan carefully when: your group assumes the 32-person lobby number applies to every mode, or when some players still use the original Nintendo Switch rather than Switch 2.
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled for an older Switch kart racer
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled provides a conventional kart-racing option for Nintendo Switch owners, with same-console play and online races. Nintendo identifies Activision as publisher and June 21, 2019, as the Switch release date. Its listed online player ceiling is up to eight, well below Mario Kart World’s listed 24, so factor that in if online group size matters to you.
Up to four people can play on one system. The cited Nintendo listing does not specify a local-wireless player limit, so confirm the current product and support information if nearby multi-console play is essential. Likewise, the fact that the game is older does not by itself establish whether online matchmaking is active in your region today. Check current service availability before purchase or before promising an online session to a large group.

How Mario Kart World differs as a comparison point
Mario Kart World is a Nintendo Switch 2 game. Nintendo’s launch announcement described an interconnected world in which players can drive across a broad connected environment. Its named modes include Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and Free Roam, giving it more than a single race format to compare against alternatives.
Nintendo lists one-system play for one to four players, local wireless for up to eight, and online play for up to 24. Those figures make it the largest listed online race-oriented capacity in this comparison, but they do not make every mode a 24-player event. As with the alternatives, read the limit attached to the mode you intend to use.

For one-system play, the two Joy-Con 2 controllers included with the console cover only part of a full four-player group. Nintendo says extra controllers are needed for local multiplayer beyond those two controllers. Count controllers before inviting four people to a shared-console session; the player limit and the number of included controllers are different facts.
Online features require internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership under Nintendo’s current multiplayer-page terms. These are service requirements, not optional enhancements if you intend to use the online modes. Nintendo’s requirements and account policies can change, so check the current multiplayer page before relying on online play.
Connection types: what your group actually needs
One console and one screen
Same-system play is the simplest arrangement when everyone is in the same room, but it is constrained by the game’s local limit and available controllers. Mario Kart World, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Kirby Air Riders, and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled are each listed for up to four players on one system. That does not mean the controller setup is identical. Mario Kart World specifically requires extra controllers beyond the two Joy-Con 2 controllers included with Switch 2 for more than two players.
Nearby consoles through local wireless
Local wireless is a different setup: players use nearby systems rather than sharing one screen. Mario Kart World and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds are both listed for up to eight local-wireless players. Kirby Air Riders is listed as supporting local wireless and specifically allows up to eight in a City Trial match. The cited Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled listing does not give a local-wireless number, so do not infer one from its four-player same-system limit.
Internet sessions
Online play is the right category when players are not in the same location. Mario Kart World lists up to 24 online players, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds lists up to 12 in World Match, and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled lists up to eight. Kirby Air Riders lists Paddock gatherings of up to 32, but that is a lobby capacity rather than a promise of a 32-player race.
For Nintendo’s online features, plan for internet access, a Nintendo Account, and Nintendo Switch Online membership where the current terms require them. Verify the exact requirement for the game, edition, region, and mode rather than assuming that a local purchase includes online access.
Choose by console, group, and connection
- Start with the console. Mario Kart World and Kirby Air Riders are Switch 2 games. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has a Nintendo Switch listing that Nintendo says is supported on Switch 2; verify which edition you are purchasing. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is listed for Nintendo Switch.
- Write down the intended group size. Separate the number sharing one system from the number using multiple nearby systems and the number joining online. A four-person living-room group has a different requirement from eight people using local wireless or 12 people joining Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds online.
- Count controllers and consoles. For same-system sessions, count compatible controllers, not just seats on the sofa. Mario Kart World’s included two Joy-Con 2 controllers do not cover a four-player session by themselves. For local wireless, count the systems and copies or editions your group will actually use.
- Match the connection to the gathering. Local wireless is for nearby systems, while online play connects players over the internet. Check the particular mode’s limit: a title’s online or lobby capacity does not automatically apply to local races or every mode.
- Pick the kind of racing you want. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled are the conventional kart-racing choices here. Kirby Air Riders is better suited to players open to multiple vehicle-action formats. Mario Kart World adds an interconnected world and named modes including Grand Prix, Knockout Tour, Battle, and Free Roam.
- Check the edition and platform wording. CrossWorlds is listed for Nintendo Switch with Switch 2 support, while the other two newer choices have distinct Switch 2 or Switch contexts. Do not assume that a cartridge, download, or bundle has identical features across editions.
- Verify current details before purchase. Check the regional product listing for edition, compatibility, online availability, player limits, and service requirements. Also check current stock and price at the retailer. No fixed price or retailer availability is established by these specifications, and both can change.
Common selection mistakes to avoid
- Confusing a lobby with a race. Kirby Air Riders’ Paddock can hold up to 32 people, but that does not mean 32 racers share one event.
- Using the online limit for local play. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ 12-player World Match figure does not replace its separate same-system and local-wireless limits.
- Assuming included hardware covers the maximum. Mario Kart World supports up to four on one system, but Switch 2 includes two Joy-Con 2 controllers, so additional controllers are needed for a full four-player session.
- Assuming Switch and Switch 2 listings are interchangeable. Confirm the edition and the stated compatibility, particularly for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds.
- Treating an older release as a guaranteed online community. Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled launched on Switch in 2019. Check current online availability and service requirements in your region.
- Reading capacity as a quality score. A higher player ceiling does not establish better handling, performance, matchmaking, accessibility, or personal enjoyment.
- Buying before checking region and stock. Prices, availability, online terms, and platform support can change. Verify the current retailer and publisher listing before checkout.
What the player counts do—and do not—tell you
Capacity figures help establish whether a game can accommodate your group in a given mode. They do not establish how a game handles, how healthy its matchmaking is, how it performs on a particular setup, or whether your group will enjoy it. Nintendo’s figures are product specifications; the information cited here does not provide independent comparative testing on those qualities.

It is also useful to separate “players gathered together” from “players racing together.” Kirby Air Riders makes that distinction especially important: an online Paddock gathering can include a large group, but it is not one race with that many participants. When choosing any multiplayer game, use the count attached to the exact mode your group plans to play.

Before checkout, identify the platform printed on the listing, the edition you need, and the largest group you expect to host. If you are comparing a Switch game with a Switch 2 game, confirm compatibility rather than relying on a similar title name. For a same-system party, verify the player ceiling and controller count. For local wireless, confirm how many systems can join the particular mode. For online play, check the game’s current service terms, Nintendo Account requirements, Nintendo Switch Online requirement where applicable, and regional availability.

Does Kirby Air Riders’ 32-player figure mean 32 people race together?
No. The up-to-32 figure applies to an online Paddock gathering. Nintendo separately lists up to eight players for a City Trial local-wireless match, so capacities vary by arrangement and mode.
Is Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds available on Switch 2?
Nintendo lists a Nintendo Switch version and says it is supported on Nintendo Switch 2, with behavior consistent with Nintendo Switch. Confirm the exact edition and regional listing before buying.
