How to Build Astarion in Baldur’s Gate 3: Class, Skills, and Gear

A practical Astarion build guide for Baldur’s Gate 3: choose Rogue skills, compare Arcane Trickster, Thief and Assassin, follow the Gloom Stalker/Assassin multiclass, and find useful gear by act.

For an easy, effective Astarion, keep him as a Dexterity-focused Rogue. Give him Sleight of Hand and Stealth for locks, traps, scouting, and ambushes; choose Persuasion if he regularly leads conversations, or Perception if your party needs another lookout. At Rogue level 3, Thief, Assassin, and his default Arcane Trickster each support a different style. If you want a more specialized opening-round attacker, the Patch 8-era option is Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7, with Ranger 5 taken before Rogue.

What Astarion is when you recruit him

Astarion is a High Elf with the Charlatan background and the Rogue class. The companion reference lists his displayed pre-recruitment level-1 ability scores as Strength 8, Dexterity 17, Constitution 14, Intelligence 12, Wisdom 13, and Charisma 10. Those are the numbers you see before recruitment; once recruited, he returns to level 1 with the standard Rogue ability-score setup and reaches Arcane Trickster by default at level 3. Check the current companion reference for the live character sheet and default subclass: Astarion — BG3 Wiki.

That distinction matters if you are planning a build around the opening scene. You are not locked into the exact pre-recruitment presentation, and a recruited companion can be respecialized. Make your final choices from the character sheet you actually have in your party rather than assuming every displayed value before recruitment will remain unchanged.

His personality also makes him a natural dialogue lead for some parties. His companion-page line, “Keep your distance, darling,” captures the theatrical voice many players want to preserve while still making him useful as a scout and skill specialist.

Choose your overall build before spending levels

There are three sensible directions. The first is a straightforward Rogue progression: it is the easiest to understand, keeps Astarion’s out-of-combat utility intact, and lets you choose a Rogue subclass that matches your table. The second is the same Rogue foundation with a deliberate subclass choice at level 3. The third is a stealth-first multiclass that trades some simplicity for a stronger opening plan and Extra Attack later in the proposed sequence.

Build direction What it emphasizes Choose it when Main trade-off
Rogue 12 Consistent Rogue utility, Dexterity skills, and a simple leveling path You want Astarion to remain a classic scout, infiltrator, and precision attacker The reviewed sources do not provide a complete level-by-level monoclass progression, so select later choices according to your party and subclass
Rogue with Thief Bonus-action flexibility You value adaptable turns and do not want to plan every encounter around a stealth opener It does not specifically deliver the stealth-opening focus of Assassin
Rogue with Assassin Stealth openings and the first exchange of combat You routinely position Astarion before a fight and want his subclass to reinforce that plan Its value depends on encounter setup, initiative, and your ability to begin from stealth
Rogue with Arcane Trickster Spell utility You want the default companion setup and are interested in adding magic to his Rogue toolkit It is a utility-oriented choice rather than a universal answer for every party or difficulty
Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 Stealth openings, initiative, and Extra Attack after Ranger 5 You are deliberately building Astarion around initiating encounters from stealth It is more specialized, delays Rogue progression, and requires managing a multiclass route

These are playstyle comparisons, not a universal damage ranking. Encounter layout, difficulty, party composition, item availability, and whether you can start from stealth all change the result. No published performance statistic establishes one option as the best in every situation.

Why Dexterity is the foundation

Rogue names Dexterity as its primary ability. Dexterity supports the parts of Astarion’s job that most players expect: moving quietly, handling locks and traps, and making attacks with the weapons available to the class. The current Rogue reference lists proficiency with simple weapons, hand crossbows, longswords, rapiers, shortswords, and light armor, along with a choice of four class skill proficiencies. See the full class reference at Rogue — BG3 Wiki.

Keep Dexterity central when you make ability improvements. The exact spread of later ability points depends on whether you stay Rogue or follow the Ranger multiclass, but abandoning Dexterity undermines both his core combat and utility roles. Constitution remains relevant to keeping him standing, while other abilities should serve a specific party plan rather than being raised without a purpose.

Pick skills for the job your party actually needs

Sleight of Hand

Sleight of Hand is the clearest fit for the classic Astarion role. It supports the practical work that sends a Rogue ahead of the group: opening locks, disarming traps, and interacting with objects that other characters may not handle reliably. If no other character already covers this role, make it one of your first priorities.

Stealth

Stealth pairs naturally with Sleight of Hand. It lets Astarion approach a target, scout a room, and set up an encounter before the rest of the party commits. It is especially important for the Assassin-centered plan, because that build assumes you can begin encounters from stealth when feasible.

Persuasion

Choose Persuasion when Astarion commonly leads dialogue. The cited Ranger/Rogue guide specifically recommends Persuasion and Sleight of Hand for its multiclass plan. This is a party-coverage decision, not a requirement for every Astarion: if another character already handles conversations, spending one of your choices elsewhere may be more useful.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Perception

Perception is the practical alternative when your group needs another lookout. It helps with noticing environmental clues and hidden details during exploration. Take it when your party lacks a reliable scout; do not select it merely because Astarion is a Rogue if someone else already fills that role.

Other available Rogue skills

The Rogue proficiency list also includes Deception and Investigation, among others. Deception can fit a party that wants Astarion to handle deceitful conversations, while Investigation can complement a character who searches scenes and examines clues. The important rule is to cover gaps: Sleight of Hand plus Stealth is the classic utility pairing, Persuasion supports a dialogue lead, and Perception supports scouting.

Subclass choice at Rogue level 3

Arcane Trickster: the default utility route

Arcane Trickster is Astarion’s default subclass. Keep it when you want the companion’s standard identity and spell utility without rebuilding his concept around a particular combat opener. It is also the least disruptive choice if you are still learning how you want him to function in your party.

The default does not make Arcane Trickster mandatory. The companion reference confirms the default subclass, while the current build guide presents other routes for specialized play. If you later decide that spells are not contributing to your plan, respecialization is an available option for recruited companions; verify the current respec interface and costs in your game version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Thief: flexible bonus-action turns

Thief is the straightforward alternative when you value bonus-action flexibility. It is a good fit for players who want Astarion to adapt his turn from encounter to encounter instead of always opening from concealment. Select it when the extra flexibility matters more to you than the spell utility of Arcane Trickster or the opening-round emphasis of Assassin.

Assassin: commit to the opening

Assassin is for a stealth-first plan. Position Astarion before combat, use the environment and line of sight to remain undetected when possible, and let him begin the engagement on your terms. Its payoff is conditional: an encounter that starts in the open, catches the party unprepared, or prevents pre-combat positioning will not showcase the same strengths.

Assassin is the Rogue half of the cited Gloom Stalker multiclass. That pairing is a plan for players who enjoy preparing the first round, not a compulsory upgrade for every campaign.

The Patch 8-era Gloom Stalker / Assassin progression

The current build guide recommends taking Ranger to level 5 before advancing Rogue. It selects Gloom Stalker at Ranger level 3, then Assassin when Rogue reaches level 3. The result is Ranger 5 / Rogue 7, with Extra Attack arriving through the Ranger portion before the build finishes its Rogue levels. The progression is described in PC Gamer’s Patch 8 and beyond build guide.

  1. Advance Ranger to level 3. Follow the guide’s sequence and choose Gloom Stalker at Ranger 3. This establishes the stealth-opening identity before you add the Rogue subclass.
  2. Continue Ranger to level 5. The proposed order reaches Ranger 5 first, obtaining Extra Attack before moving into Rogue. This front-loads the martial progression but postpones Rogue subclass features.
  3. Take Rogue levels after Ranger 5. Advance Rogue until level 3 and select Assassin, completing the multiclass’s stealth-opening pairing.
  4. Finish at Ranger 5 / Rogue 7. The cited guide’s endpoint is seven Rogue levels after the five Ranger levels. Treat that endpoint as the guide’s plan, not as a requirement for every party.
  5. Apply the guide’s feat suggestions at the relevant Rogue 4 point. It lists +2 Dexterity and either Alert or Savage Attacker as choices. These are recommendations for that build, so choose according to your initiative needs, attack plan, and party support rather than assuming both are mandatory.

Use this route only if you are comfortable managing two class progressions. It asks you to delay Rogue features while Ranger advances, and it is most coherent when Astarion can scout, start fights from stealth, and exploit the first exchange. If you prefer a character who is useful in every room without a setup phase, stay with Rogue and choose a subclass to taste.

Equipment: start with the role, then upgrade by act

Starting Rogue equipment

The Rogue starting kit listed in the class reference contains a shortsword, leather armor, leather boots, thieves’ tools, and two grease bottles. That kit is enough to begin the scout-and-infiltrator job; do not feel pressured to replace every item immediately. Confirm class equipment details at Rogue — BG3 Wiki.

Keep thieves’ tools available whenever Astarion is the character opening locks or disarming traps. Light armor suits a Dexterity-focused Rogue, while weapon changes should follow the items you actually find and the subclass plan you selected.

Notable examples for the Gloom Stalker / Assassin route

The current guide names the following in-game equipment examples. Availability depends on your route and choices; none is required for the build to function, and no item should be treated as universally optimal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Campaign stage Examples named by the guide How to use the list
Act 1 Knife of the Undermountain King; Caustic Band; Auntie Ethel’s Hair as a stat-boost example Use these as optional targets if they fit your route. The Hair is a stat-boost example, not a prerequisite for recruiting or leveling Astarion.
Act 2 Yuan-Ti Scale Mail Consider it as an upgrade for the specialized stealth multiclass when you obtain it; do not assume every campaign makes it available in the same way.
Act 3 Elegant Studded Leather; Legacy of the Masters; Armour of Agility; Bloodthirst; Crimson Mischief Evaluate each against the rest of your party and the weapons and armor already in your inventory. The guide presents them as notable examples, not a mandatory shopping list.

The useful principle is to match gear to the job. A stealth opener benefits from equipment that supports getting into position and surviving the first exchange; a general Rogue needs dependable Dexterity-oriented weapons, light armor, and tools for exploration. Because item availability can change with route and decisions, build around the pieces you can actually obtain rather than delaying a level or respec while waiting for one named item.

How to play each version in the party

Exploration and infiltration

Let Astarion move ahead of the group when you expect traps, locked containers, or a guarded approach. Separate him from the party before interacting with a suspicious object, keep thieves’ tools on hand, and use Stealth when you want to inspect a room without immediately committing everyone to combat. Perception is valuable here only if your party needs another character looking for hidden details; it does not replace Sleight of Hand for opening or disarming.

Dialogue leadership

If Astarion is your face, select Persuasion and keep him as the active character before initiating conversations. This lets the skill choice serve both exploration and social encounters. If another companion already handles dialogue, leave that role with them and use Astarion’s available proficiency for Perception, Stealth, or another gap in your roster.

Opening combat from stealth

The Assassin and Gloom Stalker plan assumes preparation. Scout first, identify where the rest of your party will stand, and begin the encounter only after you have a safe approach. If the battlefield prevents that setup, treat Astarion as a normal Dexterity-based Rogue rather than forcing a risky solo advance. The multiclass is strongest as a deliberate tactic; it is not a reason to expose him before the party is ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When a simple Rogue is better

Stay with Rogue when you want fewer decisions during leveling, reliable access to Rogue utility, and freedom to choose between Arcane Trickster, Thief, and Assassin without planning a two-class endpoint. This is the better fit for a first playthrough, a party that already has strong front-line attackers, or a campaign in which fights frequently begin without a stealth phase.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

  • Treating the pre-recruitment sheet as permanent: build from the recruited character’s actual level-1 sheet, not only the displayed stats before he joins.
  • Choosing four skills without checking party coverage: start with Sleight of Hand and Stealth for the classic role, then decide whether Persuasion or Perception fills a real gap.
  • Picking Assassin without using stealth: if you rarely scout or initiate combat from concealment, Thief or Arcane Trickster may provide more consistent value for your playstyle.
  • Entering the multiclass without accepting its delay: Ranger 5 comes before Rogue in the cited plan, so Rogue progression is postponed while you obtain Gloom Stalker and Extra Attack.
  • Chasing every named item: the listed weapons, armor, accessories, and stat-boost example are optional and route-dependent. Keep a functional weapon, light armor, and thieves’ tools equipped while you pursue upgrades.
  • Assuming a guide’s feat choices are universal: +2 Dexterity, Alert, and Savage Attacker are the cited plan’s suggestions at its Rogue 4 point. Your initiative, party support, and preferred combat rhythm may justify a different choice.

Patch 8 and future-version caveats

Larian dated Patch 8’s rollout to April 15, 2025 and described it as the final major update. The multiclass guide used here is explicitly framed around Patch 8 and beyond. Hotfixes, mods, platform differences, or later changes can still affect a mechanic-sensitive detail, so verify the current in-game tooltips and character sheet if a feature behaves differently from the descriptions above. The official game site is Larian Studios’ Baldur’s Gate 3 page.

Which Astarion build should you use?

Use a Dexterity Rogue with Sleight of Hand and Stealth if you want the dependable companion who scouts, opens locks, handles traps, and contributes precision attacks. Choose Persuasion when he is your speaker, or Perception when your party needs another lookout. Keep Arcane Trickster for the default spell-utility identity, select Thief for flexible bonus-action turns, and choose Assassin when you consistently prepare fights from stealth. Pick Gloom Stalker Ranger 5 / Assassin Rogue 7 only when you specifically want that setup-and-opening style and accept its more involved leveling order.
