The best game like RuneScape depends on which part of its long-term appeal you want to keep. If you want self-directed skill training, quests, and a world shaped by its community, start with Old School RuneScape. For a long guided story, try Final Fantasy XIV Online’s North American free trial; for a fantasy MMO whose core game has no subscription fee, consider Guild Wars 2; and for crafting and a player-run economy with real full-loot PvP risk, look at Albion Online.
“Long-term” can mean years of personal skill goals, a large narrative, collecting and mastering systems, or participating in a consequential economy. These games preserve different parts of RuneScape’s appeal, rather than offering identical substitutes.

What kind of long-term progression do you want?
Before choosing, decide whether you want to invent your own goals or have the game set a path. RuneScape’s signature appeal is often the freedom to work on a skill, quest, collection, or money-making project at your own pace. The alternatives below emphasize different loops.
Open-ended skills and community-shaped updates: Old School RuneScape
Old School RuneScape is the most direct answer to “games like RuneScape,” because it is part of the same franchise. Jagex describes it as a retro fantasy MMORPG launched in 2013 from a 2007 snapshot, with major changes governed by player voting. Its familiar mix of skill training, quests, social play, and long grinds makes it the clearest choice if you want RuneScape’s recognizable structure rather than a new interpretation of it. Jagex’s official page calls it “The timeless, player-shaped MMO where every grind matters and every achievement is earned.”

A guided story with room to keep playing: Final Fantasy XIV Online
Final Fantasy XIV is a better fit if your long-term goal is to move through a large fantasy narrative and develop character jobs along the way. Its story provides a clearer sequence of objectives than RuneScape’s open-ended skill goals. The North American Free Trial page says, “Play the Free Trial up to level 80 for FREE with no restriction on playtime!” Trial terms can change, so verify the current offer on the official page before starting.
The trial page also supports solo progression through NPC allies in supported dungeons. That can make the story easier to approach if you do not want every step to depend on finding a group, though it does not mean every activity is solo-playable.

Exploration, events, and a no-subscription core game: Guild Wars 2
Guild Wars 2 puts more emphasis on exploring, responding to dynamic events, following personal story, and choosing among professions than on RuneScape-style skill levels. ArenaNet’s official site advertises the core game as free to play and says, “Get in the game and play. No subscription fee ever!” Treat that as the publisher’s stated subscription model, not as a promise that every expansion or feature is included. Check what the current account and expansion rules require for the particular content you want.
Crafting and trade where loss can matter: Albion Online
Albion Online is the strongest match here for players who want crafting, trading, guild organization, and a player-driven economy to connect with PvP. Its sandbox activities include PvE and guild-versus-guild play, but the risk is not merely losing a match: in high-risk zones, death can cost you the gear you carried. If losing equipment would make a long session feel wasted, choose a different game on this list.

Ongoing fantasy systems: The Elder Scrolls Online
The Elder Scrolls Online is worth considering if you want a large fantasy setting with quests and systems that continue to change. Bethesda’s April 2, 2026 Season Zero post describes updates including PvP Veterancy, challenge difficulty, rewards, and crafting-hub improvements. Some event windows mentioned in that announcement were time-limited and are historical by October 2026; use it as evidence of ongoing system changes, not as a schedule of events still available.
How to choose between these online RPGs
Compare the daily and weekly loop you actually want, not just the shared label “MMO.” These are the decision points most likely to determine whether a game holds your attention.

Access terms vary by game and can change. The available official information does not provide a comparable, complete cost table across all five games, platforms, and regions, so do not assume that a free entry point includes every expansion or mode.
- Check the game’s current official access page for your region, platform, trial limits, subscription requirements, and expansion eligibility.
- For Final Fantasy XIV, verify the North American trial’s current level and content limits if you are outside North America or starting later.
- For Guild Wars 2, distinguish the advertised free core game from separately accessed expansion content.
- For Albion Online, understand zone risk and gear loss before carrying equipment into dangerous areas.
- For The Elder Scrolls Online, consult current official purchase and access terms; the cited Season Zero announcement is about game updates, not a full cost breakdown.
Player-count claims need careful reading
Publisher-reported totals can provide context, but they are not a reliable way to compare how active these games are now. Square Enix’s North American Final Fantasy XIV trial page says “Over 30 Million* Players Worldwide”; its footnote defines that as total accounts across Japan, North America, Europe, Oceania, China, and South Korea, including Free Trial accounts—not active players. ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2 page says “21 Million Players Strong” without defining that number as active users. Jagex’s 2026 anniversary announcement says the RuneScape franchise has welcomed over 300 million player accounts, also an account total rather than an active-user measure. None of these figures should be treated as a current active-population ranking.
