If a PS5 system update is stuck or fails to install, retry it from Downloads/Uploads first. If that does not work, try the regular update over a wired connection, then use Safe Mode to update directly or from an official Sony file on USB. Reinstalling system software is a separate, destructive recovery step: Sony says it deletes all data on the console.
Start with the least disruptive fix: retry the download
- Press the PS button and open Downloads/Uploads.
- Highlight the system software update, select View Error Info, then choose Try Again.
If the update fails multiple times, stop repeating the same attempt and move to the manual update options below. Sony documents the retry flow and official update methods on its PS5 system software support page.
Try the normal online update over LAN
If the PS5 reaches its home screen, connect it to your router with a LAN cable where possible, then open Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings and select Update System Software. A wired connection is Sony’s recommended option where available; it is worth trying before recovery steps.
Update from Safe Mode
Safe Mode lets you run a system software update when normal access is limited. Sony supports both an online update and an update from USB storage there.

- Turn off the PS5 completely.
- Press and hold the power button again. Release it after the second beep; Sony says the second beep sounds about seven seconds after the first.
- Connect the controller to the console with a USB cable and press the PS button.
- Select Update System Software, then follow the on-screen instructions. Choose the online option if available, or prepare the official USB update file using the steps below.
See Sony’s Safe Mode system software update instructions and its Safe Mode option descriptions. Read each option’s description before selecting it: some Safe Mode actions preserve data, while reset and reinstallation options erase it.
Install the official update from a USB drive
Use this route if online downloads keep failing or the PS5 cannot download the update. You need a computer and a USB drive formatted as FAT32 or exFAT. Sony’s page currently specifies approximately 1.1 GB of free space for the update file; check the live instructions for current requirements.

- On a PC or Mac, format the USB drive as FAT32 or exFAT.
- At the root of the drive, create a folder named
PS5; inside it, create a folder namedUPDATE. - Download the current update file from Sony’s official PS5 system software page and save it in the
UPDATEfolder asPS5UPDATE.PUP. - Connect the USB drive to the PS5, start Safe Mode using the steps above, and select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device > OK.
If the console does not detect the file, check the drive format, folder nesting and exact uppercase folder and file names. Use Sony’s file and documented procedure only: Sony warns that update data from other sources or installed by other methods can stop the console operating properly and may affect warranty and repair services.
Reinstall only as a last resort — it deletes console data
A system software update and a system software reinstallation are not the same procedure. Reinstallation uses a separate reinstallation file and the Safe Mode option Reset PS5 (Reinstall System Software). Sony says this deletes all data on the PS5 console. Back up your data first if possible, and do not choose this option as a routine retry. Follow the separate reinstallation instructions on Sony’s official support page.

Do not interrupt an installation
Once installation begins, leave the console powered on. PlayStation Support warns: “Don’t turn off your console during the installation. Interrupting the installation can cause your console to be damaged.” The warning appears in Sony’s PS5 system software instructions.

Check the exact error code shown on the console against Sony’s PS5 error code index. It includes CE-113338-9 for an error while updating PS5 system software and CE-109737-7 for USB storage not being recognized. A different download, account or network code does not by itself establish that the system software is corrupt.

If the official manual update fails, Safe Mode will not start, or update problems persist, use PlayStation Repairs diagnostics and support. Repair availability and terms can depend on your region and circumstances.
