If you want the closest follow-up to The Outer Worlds 2, play The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition. Choose Mass Effect Legendary Edition for a crew-led story with choices that continue across a trilogy, or Starfield if you want a much broader space-exploration sandbox. They share sci-fi role-playing elements, but they are not interchangeable: each suits a different reason for looking for a game like The Outer Worlds 2.
What makes a game feel like The Outer Worlds 2?
The Outer Worlds 2 puts players in the role of an Earth Directorate agent investigating dangerous rifts in Arcadia. Its appeal includes sci-fi action RPG play, factions, companions, character-building choices, and a world that reacts to decisions. Obsidian says the colony’s fate depends on the player’s strengths, flaws, crew, and faction alliances; its official game page describes that premise.

That combination points to several different kinds of “similar.” You might want another game in the same colony setting, a party of companions and far-reaching story choices, or simply more freedom to explore space. The recommendations below are organized around those preferences rather than treated as a single objective ranking.
Best games like The Outer Worlds 2 at a glance
| Game | Best fit | Where the similarity is strongest | Key difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition | Closest series match | Sci-fi RPG, remote-colony factions, choices, and companion stories | It is the earlier game in the series, not a continuation of the sequel’s story. |
| Mass Effect Legendary Edition | Crew, relationships, and consequential choices | Companions and decisions that carry across multiple games | It is a three-game collection with a larger time commitment and a different structure. |
| Starfield | Open-ended space exploration | Sci-fi role-playing, character creation, and freedom to explore | Its strongest match is exploratory scale, not a verified similarity in tone or choice density. |
This is a qualitative fit guide based on the games’ official descriptions, not a hands-on test or objective score.

1. The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition — closest to the series
If you have not played the first The Outer Worlds, this is the most direct place to start. PlayStation describes it as a single-player sci-fi RPG set in a remote colony, with factions and choices that affect the story, character build, companion stories, and end-game scenarios. Companions have their own missions, motivations, and ideals. The PlayStation game page describes the Spacer’s Choice Edition as including the base game and all add-on content, along with remaster improvements.
That makes it the closest match for players drawn to the sequel’s colony politics and party of distinct companions. It is still a separate, earlier adventure; choose it for the series’ setting and approach, not because it continues the sequel’s plot.

2. Mass Effect Legendary Edition — best for a crew and choices across a trilogy
Pick Mass Effect Legendary Edition if what you want most is a crew whose relationships and stories develop alongside a larger sci-fi conflict. EA says the collection includes the single-player base games Mass Effect, Mass Effect 2, and Mass Effect 3, plus more than 40 DLC. Choices carry from one game to the next and can affect missions, relationships, battles, and the fate of the galaxy, according to the official EA product page.
Rank #3
The collection is a particularly good fit if you value long-term narrative consequences and companion relationships. Its three-game scope means a larger time commitment than starting a single standalone recommendation, and its structure differs from The Outer Worlds 2. Go in expecting a trilogy, not a close copy of the sequel’s format.

Choose Starfield if your priority is creating a character and exploring a broader space setting. PlayStation describes it as a sci-fi RPG from Bethesda Game Studios, with an emphasis on character creation and exploratory freedom. Its official product page also highlights weapon modification, zero-gravity combat, and the Shattered Space and Terran Armada expansions.

- Enter the stadium and take part of one of the biggest competitions across 34 sports: from swimming, soccer, extreme bike, weightlifting, trampoline and much more!
- Defend your own country and visit the World: United States, Australia, Japan, France…
- Train yourself alone or compete with your friends!
- An enhanced version of “30 Sport Games in 1”, with revamped design, new games and more customisation!
Exploration is the clearest reason to recommend it here. The official description does not establish a close match to The Outer Worlds 2 in tone, companion focus, or the density of consequential choices, so do not pick it expecting those specific similarities. Pick it for a more open-ended space RPG experience.
