Why awards named different best games
The results depend on which award and category you mean. Spike’s December 2011 awards and the 12th Game Developers Choice Awards both selected Skyrim as Game of the Year. BAFTA’s March 2012 ceremony, recognizing the 2011 field, chose Portal 2 as Best Game. Those outcomes are different judgments, not evidence of a single universal ranking.

Choose Skyrim for open-world role-playing
It has the strongest overall-award case among these sources, taking Game of the Year from both Spike and GDCA as well as Spike’s Best RPG. That makes it the clearest pick if you want a role-playing game and value recognition across award bodies.

Choose Portal 2 for puzzles and story
Its BAFTA Best Game win and awards for design and story, alongside GDCA wins for narrative and design, make it the strongest fit here if puzzle construction and storytelling matter more to you than an open world.
Consider the other finalists and category winners
- Batman: Arkham City is an action-adventure alternative backed by a GDCA Game of the Year finalist placement and a Spike category win.
