But there was no single industry-wide verdict. Mass Effect 2, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops and Limbo each stand out under different awards or measures of success.
How to interpret “best” in 2010
Different organizations answered different questions. The Game Critics Awards ranked games eligible for commercial release in North America during calendar year 2010, using judges’ point totals to produce a top ten. The Game Developers Choice Awards honored developer-selected achievements, BAFTA’s GAME Award of 2010 was decided by public vote, Spike TV gave its own awards, and the Entertainment Software Association reported U.S. retail unit rankings based on The NPD Group/Retail Tracking Service. These results are useful evidence, not one universal consensus.
The Game Critics Awards’ eligibility and ranking details are in its 2010 results; the other award and sales records are linked below where they inform a specific distinction.
Which games stood out most?
Red Dead Redemption: the strongest cross-award case
Red Dead Redemption placed first in the Game Critics Awards’ 2010 ranked list. It also won Game of the Year at the Game Developers Choice Awards and Spike TV’s 2010 awards; the Game Developers Choice archive additionally records wins for design, technology and audio. That combination makes it the most consistently recognized overall choice in this set, though it does not make the title an uncontested winner across every organization. Mass Effect 2: a major alternative for writing and role-playing
Mass Effect 2 ranked second in the Game Critics list, won Best Writing at the Game Developers Choice Awards, and received Spike’s Best Xbox 360 Game and Best RPG awards. BAFTA lists it as a nominee for its public-vote GAME Award of 2010. Its awards make it a leading alternative to Red Dead Redemption, particularly if writing or RPG recognition matters to your definition of “best.” Game Critics results · Game Developers Choice archive · Spike TV results · BAFTA award page
Super Mario Galaxy 2: a standout Wii release
Super Mario Galaxy 2 came third in the Game Critics ranking, was a BAFTA nominee, and won Spike’s Best Wii Game. The ESA’s U.S. retail list placed it twelfth by units sold for 2010. The awards and sales placement show distinct forms of recognition; neither should be mistaken for a global or lifetime sales position. Call of Duty: Black Ops: the commercial leader and public-vote winner
Call of Duty: Black Ops won BAFTA’s publicly voted GAME Award of 2010 and ranked seventh in the Game Critics top ten. It also led the ESA’s U.S. 2010 retail ranking by units sold. Its case illustrates why the award source and metric matter: public voting and retail performance recognized it differently from the critics’ top-ranked title. Limbo: an acclaimed choice beyond the big retail hits
Limbo ranked sixth in the Game Critics list and won Best Visual Arts at the Game Developers Choice Awards. Those honors give it a place on a shortlist that would otherwise lean heavily on major releases and broad commercial rankings. Game Critics results · Game Developers Choice archive
