There was no single authoritative ranking of the best games of 2018, and the available sources do not establish a verified top 50 in a definitive order. This guide brings together notable games recognized by contemporaneous editors, award juries and readers, alongside a geographically limited sales signal. It is a cross-genre shortlist—not a claim that these are the year’s objectively best 50, or a reconstruction of a particular original list.
For editorial context, TIME’s list reflects games its editors found compelling, surprising or joyful. The Game Awards and D.I.C.E. nominations offer separate forms of industry recognition; PlayStation.Blog’s results reflect reader voting. SELL’s figures describe France, not worldwide sales. The picks below are grouped by the kind of experience they offer, rather than ranked against one another.
What were the best games of 2018?
These standouts show why a useful year-end list needs more than blockbuster releases. Award results help identify widely recognized work, but they are not interchangeable with editorial judgment, player votes or sales. The selection below draws on those different signals while making room for distinct genres and scales.
God of War
God of War won The Game Awards’ 2018 Game of the Year and was also a D.I.C.E. Game of the Year finalist. That combination makes it a strong pick for readers looking first at the year’s most prominently recognized console release. The Game Awards’ 2018 retrospective records the win.

Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 appeared in TIME’s editorial selection and was a D.I.C.E. Game of the Year finalist. It also appears in SELL’s French-market rankings, an independent commercial signal that should not be mistaken for a global sales chart. TIME’s 2018 selection and the SELL report provide those distinct contexts.
Marvel’s Spider-Man
Marvel’s Spider-Man was another D.I.C.E. Game of the Year finalist and a TIME pick, and it appears in SELL’s French rankings. It belongs in a broad roundup as a major release recognized across editorial, awards and regional market sources—not because those sources establish a single universal score.
Into the Breach
Into the Breach offers a strategy-focused counterpoint to the large action-adventure releases. TIME included it in its selection, and it was a D.I.C.E. Game of the Year finalist. Its presence in both an editorial list and an awards shortlist makes it a useful example of how acclaimed 2018 games crossed genre lines.

Which 2018 games stand out beyond the blockbusters?
A roundup limited to big-budget console releases would miss smaller-scale and independent games that received meaningful recognition. These picks broaden the shortlist without implying that every reader will prefer the same style of play.
Celeste
Celeste won The Game Awards for Best Independent Game and Games for Impact, and it was recognized in D.I.C.E. nominations. Those awards make it one of the clearest examples of an independent game that stood alongside the year’s major releases.
Return of the Obra Dinn
Return of the Obra Dinn was a D.I.C.E. Game of the Year finalist as well as an independent-game nominee. Its recognition across those categories makes it a strong pick for readers seeking something outside the usual blockbuster profile.

Florence
Florence won The Game Awards’ Best Mobile Game and was included in TIME’s selection. Its appearance in both a platform-specific award category and a general editorial roundup demonstrates that 2018’s notable releases were not confined to console or PC lists.
Subnautica
Subnautica was one of TIME’s editorial picks. Its inclusion helps round out the list with a title recognized by editors rather than selected solely through award categories or commercial rankings.

Each recognition process answers a different question. The Game Awards named God of War its 2018 Game of the Year, while its category winners included Celeste for Best Independent Game and Games for Impact, and Florence for Best Mobile Game. These results are documented in The Game Awards’ 2018 retrospective.
Rank #4
The Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences announced 56 games as finalists across the 22nd D.I.C.E. Awards. That is a count of finalists for the awards, not a count of games released in 2018. Its Game of the Year nominees included God of War, Marvel’s Spider-Man, Red Dead Redemption 2, Into the Breach and Return of the Obra Dinn. The Academy’s nomination announcement also reports 12 nominations for God of War, 11 for Marvel’s Spider-Man, eight for Red Dead Redemption 2 and six for Return of the Obra Dinn; those are nomination totals, not wins.
PlayStation.Blog’s 2018 awards used reader voting across 15 categories. The blog describes hundreds of thousands of votes, but that figure is its own description rather than an independently audited count in the results passage. These are PlayStation readers’ choices, not a poll of all players. See the PlayStation.Blog winners for the categories and results.

Platform labels are not universal: an award list, regional sales table and individual game edition may cover different systems. The Japan Game Awards’ 2018 winners release explicitly defines abbreviations including PS4, PS Vita, 3DS and Windows PC. Confirm the current listing for the specific game and platform you want; the sources here do not establish present-day availability, prices, performance, age ratings or accessibility features.
What do 2018 sales rankings show?
SELL’s February 2019 report covers the French video game market and includes separate game rankings, as well as physical-market and platform-specific tables. It lists titles including Red Dead Redemption 2, Marvel’s Spider-Man and Super Mario Party. Those results are evidence of performance in the French market under the report’s stated measures; they are not global rankings or a measure of critical quality. The SELL report distinguishes value and unit rankings, so any individual figure needs to be read against its specific table and column.
Why isn’t there one definitive top 50?
The sources use different selection rules: TIME published a ten-game editorial selection; award programs nominated or selected titles according to their own categories and juries; PlayStation.Blog reported votes from its readers; and SELL measured a national market. None of those sources establishes the exact 50 games or order implied by a canonical “top 50.” A list can still be useful if it explains what it values and does not present unlike measures as if they were one ranking.
