There is no single game that is best for every player or every platform. This guide highlights standout choices for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch, weighing platform availability, award recognition or player response, and the kind of experience each game offers. Use the “best for” notes to find a match for your tastes, then confirm the game is released and available in your region.
How to choose the best game for your platform
“Best” is a recommendation, not a universal ranking. These picks draw on current platform-specific recognition, player-vote results, editorial recommendations, platform support and variety of play styles. Awards and review lists are useful signals, but they measure different things: an award is not a platform-wide ranking, a poll reflects its voters, and a critic’s list reflects its publication’s judgment.
For a broader check of recent releases, Metacritic’s current-year catalog lets readers filter by PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Its scores aggregate reviews; they are one input, not a substitute for checking what a game is like or whether it suits you.
Best games for PS5
Best all-around current pick: Ghost of Yōtei
Platform: PS5. Best for: players looking for a major PS5 adventure. Ghost of Yōtei was one of the PS5 games recognized in the Japan Game Awards 2026. It also received the Platinum result in the PlayStation Blog’s 2025 Best PS5 Game player poll. That result is a signal from that poll, not proof of a universal consensus.

It is not a PS5 exclusive, so PC players can consider it too; check the edition and local release status before buying.

The PlayStation Blog’s 2025 poll says votes were nearly evenly split for much of the voting period. Read its medal results as the outcome of that specific player vote, rather than a definitive ordering of every worthwhile PS5 game. The poll also defines its ongoing-game category as recognizing games that continue to delight players with major content packs and seasonal updates after launch.

Best award-recognized horror option: SILENT HILL f
