What was the best game of 1996?
If one title must stand as the clearest choice for historical influence, Super Mario 64 has the strongest support in the sources available here. Nintendo dates the game to June 23, 1996 and describes it as the first 3D action game in the Super Mario series. TIME’s 2016 retrospective argues that it “laid out a grammar for how to interact with 3D worlds.” That is a later assessment, not a contemporaneous 1996 review consensus.
Its significance is not simply that Mario entered a three-dimensional space. The game made movement, camera perspective and exploration central to how players learned that space. TIME quoted Rockstar co-founder and Grand Theft Auto V co-writer Dan Houser saying: “Anyone who makes 3-D games who says they’ve not borrowed something from Mario or Zelda [on Nintendo 64] is lying.” The quotation describes retrospective influence, not proof that every later 3D game borrowed directly from Mario 64.

For context, Nintendo’s UK corporate history says more than 500,000 Nintendo 64 systems sold on the first day of the system’s Japanese launch on June 23, 1996. That is a Nintendo-published figure, not an independently audited sales total. Nintendo’s history also dates Pokémon’s Japanese debut to February 26, 1996; neither date should be treated as a North American or European release date.
Why was 1996 such a big year for video games?
The year’s appeal comes from its contrasts, not from a single style or platform. Super Mario 64 made 3D movement and exploration its defining challenge. Mario Kart 64 turned that hardware generation toward racing and multiplayer competition, with Nintendo’s Japanese catalog documenting 16 race courses and four Battle courses. Elsewhere, retrospective lists point to survival horror, action platforming and PC role-playing, while Pokémon represents handheld play.

That range makes 1996 useful as a snapshot of games expanding in different directions at once.
