If you want something to play before Phantom Blade Zero, choose by the part of its appeal you want most: precise sword duels, fast martial-arts action, or Chinese fantasy spectacle. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, and Black Myth: Wukong each make a reasonable stopgap, but none should be treated as a confirmed match for its combat system.
What makes a game a good fit?
PlayStation describes Phantom Blade Zero as a “dark wuxia action RPG” drawing on traditional martial arts and punk fantasy. Its protagonist, Soul, is framed for murdering his master and has 66 days left to live. That mix suggests three useful ways to choose a game while you wait: dueling, martial-arts pace, or Chinese fantasy atmosphere. These are practical comparison points, not an official ranking or a developer-published taxonomy.

The game is not best reduced to “just a Soulslike.” Steam includes “Souls-like RPG” among its store tags, but a tag is metadata, not a definitive description of the design. In a 2023 interview, the developers discussed wuxia and kung-fu influences and said combat moves were handcrafted because motion capture could not do them justice. In PC Gamer’s 2025 hands-on preview, combat director Qianli Ma described the intended feel this way: “The whole concept is the wuxia, kung fu style-you want to dance”. PlayStation’s game description, Steam’s listing, the 2023 PlayStation Blog interview, and PC Gamer’s 2025 preview provide those descriptions.

| Game | Best fit | Why it belongs on the list | What not to assume |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice | Demanding sword duels | A strong candidate if you want focused, sword-led combat while you wait. | The available sources do not establish that its mechanics match Phantom Blade Zero. |
| Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty | Fast martial-arts action | It is a sensible pick if pace and martial-arts combat are your priority. | That is a recommendation judgment, not an official claim of equivalence. |
| Black Myth: Wukong | Chinese fantasy action-RPG spectacle | It suits players drawn to the Chinese fantasy action-RPG side of the coming game’s appeal. | Do not expect it to share Phantom Blade Zero’s combat system. |
Which one should you play first?
Pick Sekiro for sword-duel intensity
Start with Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice if what you most want is the pressure and precision of sword-focused encounters. It is the clearest match on this list for someone who wants a duel-centered action game; that overlap does not mean the two games play alike.

Pick Wo Long for martial-arts pace
Choose Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty if you are looking for a fast martial-arts direction. It fits the action-oriented side of the wait without requiring the claim that its combat is a blueprint for Phantom Blade Zero.
Pick Black Myth: Wukong for Chinese fantasy
Choose Black Myth: Wukong if Chinese fantasy action-RPG atmosphere and spectacle matter more to you than a close combat comparison. PC Gamer has situated Phantom Blade Zero among ambitious Chinese action games, but that context does not establish shared mechanics.
