Return of the Obra Dinn: piece together what happened
You play an insurance investigator for the East India Company’s London office, sent to inspect the Obra Dinn after it returns to Falmouth without a visible crew. The official site dates its departure from London to late 1802 and its return to October 14, 1807. The investigation centers on revisiting moments of death and working out who died, how, and what—or who—caused it. The game expects you to draw your own conclusions from the evidence, making it the clearest pick here for players who want to do the inferential work rather than follow a heavily guided case.

The Case of the Golden Idol: solve a chain of scene-based puzzles
This game casts you as an 18th-century detective investigating twelve connected deaths across 50 years. You examine scenes, reconstruct events, and infer suspects, motives, and murder weapons. Its appeal is the act of turning details into a theory; the cases connect, but each scene gives you a focused deduction problem to work through. The Steam description calls it “A new kind of detective game that allows you to think and investigate freely.”

L.A. Noire: search for clues and question suspects
Set in a recreation of late-1940s Los Angeles, L.A. Noire is built around clue-hunting and suspect interrogation. It suits players who want a methodical crime thriller and a sequence of investigative cases, rather than a mystery focused chiefly on abstract logic puzzles. This is a fit by documented mechanics and setting, not a claim that it is the most realistic detective simulation.
Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments: choose what the evidence means
Here, the investigation involves connecting clues in Holmes’s mind palace and deciding which conclusion follows. Those conclusions can be wrong, including an accusation against the wrong person. That possibility makes it a useful choice if you are interested not only in finding evidence but also in the consequences of interpreting it.
