For a new multi-platform 2.4GHz system, consider the Razer Hammerhead V3 HyperSpeed; for lightweight PC and PS5 use, the Sony INZONE Buds are a focused option. If you play on Xbox, check the exact model variant before buying. Ordinary Bluetooth earbuds can be convenient, but a dedicated 2.4GHz receiver or wired connection is the safer bet for synchronized game audio.

RTINGS’ ranking is a useful starting point, not a universal verdict: its shortlist can change as products and testing are updated. The outlet’s Razer Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed and Sony INZONE Buds comparison illustrates that rankings depend on which products and criteria are being compared.
Which gaming earbuds should you buy?
Best overall: SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds
RTINGS lists the Arctis GameBuds as its top gaming-earbud pick in its 2026 guide. That makes them the clearest broad recommendation in the available independent testing signal, but it does not establish a universal winner for every console, ear shape or microphone need. Confirm the exact console version, compatibility and current availability on the product listing before ordering; the available testing citation does not establish a current price or a universal platform claim. See RTINGS’ criteria and current ranking.
Best new multi-platform option: Razer Hammerhead V3 HyperSpeed
This model combines a 2.4GHz HyperSpeed connection with Bluetooth 6.0, and Razer lists compatibility with PC, Mac, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, iOS and Android. Razer’s US product page showed a price of $129.99 on August 16, 2026; prices can change. It is a practical candidate if you want one set for gaming and mobile use, but the compatibility list does not establish Xbox support.

Razer claims up to 10 hours of earbud use plus 30 hours from the case. Treat those as manufacturer figures rather than a guarantee of runtime in every mode. THX Spatial Audio is available on PC through Razer Synapse; Razer says Windows 11 version 23H2 or higher is required for 7.1 surround support in Synapse. TechRadar’s hands-on review found the ANC weaker than alternatives and questioned the sound value, so extra features are not proof of better noise cancelling or sound. Best for lightweight PC and PS5 use: Sony INZONE Buds
Sony lists the earbuds at approximately 6.5g each and supplies a USB transceiver intended for PC and PS5 gaming. Their Bluetooth connection uses LE Audio with the LC3 codec, which works only with compatible devices; it should not be treated as interchangeable with ordinary Bluetooth support. Sony’s INZONE Hub software on PC handles configuration and activates its 360 Spatial Sound for Gaming feature. The light weight and reduced-contact design may suit some ears, but neither specification guarantees comfort for a particular wearer. Sony’s product information
Best high-feature alternative: ASUS ROG Cetra True Wireless SpeedNova
The SpeedNova pairs 2.4GHz wireless with Bluetooth and adds ANC, RGB lighting and multipoint. ASUS lists its 2.4GHz support for PC, Mac, Android, Switch, PS4 and PS5; the cited support list does not include Xbox. The US page showed a $199.99 standard price signal and a $109.99 promotional configuration on August 16, 2026, so check the live listing and exact configuration.
ASUS claims up to 36 hours total over 2.4GHz and up to 46 hours over Bluetooth, but battery results vary substantially with ANC, RGB and connection mode. Do not use the higher Bluetooth figure as an estimate for a gaming session over 2.4GHz. ASUS specifications and mode details

Best lower-cost console wireless: Razer Hammerhead V3 X HyperSpeed
Razer sells separate Xbox and PlayStation versions, announced July 8, 2026. Both use 2.4GHz HyperSpeed and Bluetooth 5.3. The US price signal was $99.99 on August 16, 2026. The PlayStation model is listed for PS5, PC, mobile, Mac, Switch and Steam Deck; the PlayStation page says up to eight hours on PS5 under its stated conditions, while the range claims up to 10 hours in the buds plus 25 hours from the case. Those figures are not interchangeable.
Buy the version named for your console rather than assuming one model works on both Xbox and PlayStation. The V3 X is a lower-cost route to a dedicated receiver, but it omits some of the premium feature set of the V3 HyperSpeed. Razer’s V3 X range · PlayStation model details · Launch announcement

Best established gaming-and-mobile alternative: JBL Quantum TWS
JBL Quantum TWS offers a 2.4GHz dongle, Bluetooth and ANC, with PC configuration through JBL Quantum software and mobile configuration through the JBL Headphones app. JBL claims six microphones with integrated beamforming, but that feature description does not establish chat clarity or noise rejection in practice. Check whether the software features you want are available on the device you plan to use. JBL product information
Best wired value: a well-reviewed IEM that fits
A wired in-ear monitor (IEM) or gaming earphone avoids wireless pairing, battery charging and dongle compatibility issues. There is no single wired model established here as a tested winner, so choose by independent sound and comfort reviews, a suitable microphone arrangement and the connection your device accepts. RTINGS includes wired earbuds as a sensible gaming category, but model-level selection still requires model-specific evidence. RTINGS’ gaming-earbud guide

2.4GHz receiver: the safer wireless gaming choice
A proprietary 2.4GHz USB receiver is generally a safer choice than ordinary Bluetooth when you want game audio and action to stay synchronized. It can also simplify pairing, but it occupies a USB port and may require a USB-A adapter or short extension. USB wireless audio support differs across PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Switch, so verify support for the exact device and model rather than relying on a broad “console compatible” label.
Some systems make the case part of the receiver arrangement. Razer’s V3 HyperSpeed uses its charging case in the 2.4GHz receiver system, while the V3 X range requires choosing a PlayStation or Xbox edition. A case-based receiver can be convenient to carry, but it also makes the case a potential single point of failure; confirm whether the receiver can operate independently before purchase if that matters to you. Razer V3 HyperSpeed details · Razer V3 X variants
Bluetooth: convenient, but not automatically low latency
Bluetooth can add noticeable delay, particularly when the microphone is active, and a Bluetooth 5.x or 6.0 badge alone does not promise gaming-grade latency. A product’s gaming mode may reduce delay, but check independent testing rather than assuming it matches a dedicated receiver. Bluetooth remains useful for phones, music and secondary devices.
Bluetooth LE Audio and LC3 require support at both ends of the connection. Sony’s INZONE Buds use LE Audio/LC3 for compatible devices, while the main PC and PS5 gaming connection is the USB transceiver. Verify the phone, computer or handheld supports the required audio standard before buying on that basis. Sony’s INZONE Buds information

Wired: least wireless friction
A 3.5mm or USB-C wired set avoids wireless latency and battery concerns. It can be a good fit for competitive PC play, uncertain Xbox wireless support, tight budgets, or players who already use a separate microphone. The trade-off is cable handling, no wireless convenience, and microphones that may be mediocre. A 3.5mm model needs an appropriate headset jack or controller connection; USB-C compatibility varies by host device.

“Works with console” can mean playback only, not microphone or party-chat support. Confirm both audio output and chat input for the exact console, connection mode and model variant. Xbox is the main compatibility trap: a PC/PS5 receiver or Bluetooth feature does not establish Xbox support.
How to choose: prioritize the parts that affect play
Latency and reliability
For wireless gaming, prioritize measured receiver performance and stable connection over Bluetooth version numbers. A wired connection is the simplest way to avoid wireless delay and pairing problems. If a receiver drops out, try a front-facing USB port or short extension, move it away from crowded USB 3.0 ports where relevant, and update firmware using the manufacturer’s supported app.
Microphone and chat
Earbud microphones are often a compromise. Look for independent recordings or listening tests that cover voice clarity, background-noise rejection and wind—not only claims such as “beamforming” or “AI mic.” Check whether the mic works in both wireless modes, whether mute is accessible on the buds, and whether mic monitoring or sidetone is available. If voice quality is central, use a standalone USB microphone on PC or a suitable console controller chat path rather than expecting every compact earbud to perform like a boom mic.
JBL’s six-microphone beamforming claim and ASUS’s omnidirectional, bone-conduction and AI microphone feature descriptions are specifications, not proof of superior voice quality. JBL Quantum TWS · ASUS SpeedNova specifications
Sound and positional cues
Judge game sound by whether you can distinguish footsteps, dialogue and effects, and whether left/right and front/back positions are clear. Heavy bass can mask quiet cues. Try stereo before enabling virtual surround: “7.1,” THX Spatial Audio or 360 Spatial Sound is not automatic proof of more accurate positioning, and processing can make imaging worse for some games or listeners. Razer’s THX Spatial Audio for the V3 HyperSpeed is a PC feature requiring Synapse, not universal console surround. Razer feature details

Fit, comfort and isolation
Ear-canal shape, tip seal and pressure matter more than a weight figure. Check included tip sizes and whether replacements are available; try a different tip if the buds feel unstable or sound thin from a poor seal. If pressure or canal irritation persists, an over-ear headset may suit you better. Passive isolation from a good seal can be more useful during play than ANC alone. ANC is mainly for noisy surroundings and travel; it does not reduce game-audio latency, can affect battery life or sound, and is separate from how well the microphone rejects noise. Transparency mode helps when you need to hear someone nearby.
Sony’s approximately 6.5g-per-earbud figure and reduced-contact design are useful indicators, not a promise of all-day comfort. Fit is individual; use a return or exchange window if available, and test the earbuds in a normal-length session before relying on them for long play.
Battery and software
Compare earbud-only runtime with total runtime including the case, and check whether figures are for Bluetooth or 2.4GHz, ANC off or on, and RGB enabled or disabled. The cited manufacturer numbers are not standardized laboratory comparisons. A case’s reserve does not help during play unless you can charge while using the buds; check the product’s charging behavior. Apps may be needed for EQ, firmware, spatial audio or PC configuration even when basic playback works on console.

PC
PC offers the broadest choice of USB receivers, companion apps and wired connections. The Arctis GameBuds lead RTINGS’ 2026 ranking; the Razer V3 HyperSpeed adds a multi-device 2.4GHz/Bluetooth setup and PC Synapse features. For any candidate, confirm whether the receiver is USB-C or USB-A, whether an adapter is included, and whether the microphone appears as an input device before joining a match.
PlayStation 5
Sony INZONE Buds are the clearest comfort-oriented PC/PS5 pick in this shortlist, using the supplied USB transceiver for gaming. Razer lists PS5 compatibility for the V3 HyperSpeed, and its V3 X PlayStation edition is explicitly console-specific. Check whether the mic and chat balance work on your own PS5 setup; PC software features may not carry over to the console.
Xbox Series X/S
Choose a product with explicit Xbox support. The Razer Hammerhead V3 X has a separate Xbox version; do not substitute the PlayStation version. The cited support lists for Sony INZONE Buds and ASUS SpeedNova do not establish Xbox compatibility. If you want the least uncertainty, use a wired 3.5mm set through a compatible controller connection and verify chat support for its mic.

Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck and other handhelds
Razer lists Switch and Steam Deck compatibility for the V3 HyperSpeed and PlayStation V3 X. ASUS lists Switch support for the SpeedNova but does not state Steam Deck support in the cited specification. On any handheld, confirm whether the receiver fits the port or needs an adapter, and whether the device supports the selected USB audio mode. Bluetooth can be convenient for portable play, but latency may be more noticeable in rhythm or timing-sensitive games.
Mobile gaming
Bluetooth is convenient for phones, while a dedicated receiver may offer lower-delay game audio if the phone supports the required connection and adapter. Sony’s LE Audio/LC3 route requires a compatible device. Check that the earbuds’ microphone works in the game or chat app you use; playback compatibility alone does not guarantee the desired chat path.
When a headset is a better buy
Earbuds are not ideal for everyone. Consider an over-ear headset if you need consistently strong voice pickup, maximum positional consistency, glasses-friendly comfort or all-day wear. If in-ear pressure remains uncomfortable even after trying tips, changing models is sensible rather than forcing the fit. Players who already own a good microphone can prioritize sound and fit in the earbuds and keep chat separate.
Set up gaming earbuds without common connection problems
- Charge and update: Charge the buds and case, then use the manufacturer’s PC app to install firmware updates if available.
- Choose the right mode: Select the 2.4GHz receiver for gaming when available; use Bluetooth for a compatible device or everyday audio.
- Connect the receiver: Plug it directly into a supported USB port. If it does not fit, use the included USB-A adapter or a short extension, and confirm the console accepts USB audio.
- Select output and input: In your PC or console audio settings, choose the earbuds for game sound and the correct microphone for chat. Confirm both directions before starting a match.
- Start with stereo: Test a familiar game in stereo, then compare any spatial-audio setting. Keep processing only if it improves cues for you.
- Check chat controls: Test mute, mic monitoring or sidetone, and game/chat balance if offered. If voice is muffled, reseat the buds, verify the wireless mode, and check whether noise suppression is too aggressive.
- Fix dropouts: Move the receiver to a front-facing port or extension, reduce nearby USB interference where relevant, and check for firmware updates.
If the sound works but the microphone does not, the device may support stereo playback without the required mic or console chat path. Test a different connection mode and verify the exact platform support before assuming the earbuds are defective.
Should you choose wireless earbuds, wired IEMs or a headset?
| Choose | When it makes sense | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4GHz gaming earbuds | You want low-delay wireless game audio, compact portability and often a second Bluetooth mode. | Receiver, charging case, software and platform compatibility add setup and failure points. |
| Bluetooth earbuds | You prioritize phone and music convenience, or your game is not sensitive to delay. | Gaming mode and Bluetooth version do not guarantee receiver-like latency; chat support can differ by device. |
| Wired IEM or earphone | You want predictable connection, no battery charging or a lower-cost route, especially with a separate microphone. | Cable handling, variable inline mic quality and device-jack compatibility. |
| Over-ear headset | You need a boom microphone, long-session comfort, or a more dependable fit and imaging experience. | Bulkier than earbuds and less convenient to carry. |
If shopping by a fixed budget, compare the exact platform edition and return policy alongside sound, fit and mic tests. The right answer is the one that works with your console and stays comfortable—not necessarily the model with the longest feature list.
