There is no single best gaming handheld for everyone. Choose the Steam Deck OLED for the simplest SteamOS experience, the Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS for a larger and more capable SteamOS device, the ASUS ROG Ally X for the best balance among Windows handhelds, the MSI Claw 8 AI+ for performance-focused gaming, and the Lenovo Legion Go for its large screen and detachable controls.

The central choice is straightforward: SteamOS is better for a Steam-first, console-like experience; Windows is better for Game Pass, Epic, Battle.net, desktop applications, mods, and the broadest launcher compatibility.

Best gaming handhelds of 2025 at a glance

Category Pick Best for Main drawback
Best SteamOS experience Steam Deck OLED Steam users who want minimal setup Lower performance ceiling
Best SteamOS performance upgrade Lenovo Legion Go S SteamOS A larger screen and faster hardware without Windows More expensive and less compact
Best Windows handheld for most buyers ASUS ROG Ally X Balanced performance, battery life, comfort, and compatibility Windows requires more maintenance
Best performance-focused option MSI Claw 8 AI+ Demanding games, 32GB of RAM, and a large VRR display Price, weight, and size
Best large-screen design Lenovo Legion Go Detachable controls, desktop use, and mouse-oriented games Bulky for travel

These are use-case recommendations, not a universal ranking. Different guides reach different conclusions because they assign different importance to convenience, frame rates, battery life, screen quality, price, and compatibility. Windows Central and PC Gamer, for example, published different 2025 category recommendations. Windows Central’s handheld recommendations and PC Gamer’s 2025 awards are best understood in that context.

SteamOS or Windows: which should you choose?

SteamOS is the better appliance-like experience

SteamOS is built around Steam’s gaming interface rather than a conventional desktop. You get a controller-friendly library, integrated compatibility information, suspend and resume, shader-cache management, per-game performance controls, and a generally console-like flow from turning on the handheld to launching a game.

#1 Best Overall

  • 【Emulator Retro Games + Android Games】 Emulation – Enjoy retro classics with enhanced compatibility and smoother performance on PS2, GameCube, and other popular systems. Android Games – Run most local games with ease, offering more ways to play on a larger screen with console-style controls."

That makes the Steam Deck OLED particularly attractive to existing Steam users. You can browse your library from the sofa, adjust performance without opening several utilities, and use the handheld without treating it like a miniature laptop.

The trade-off is software compatibility. SteamOS uses Proton to run many Windows games, and a large number of Steam releases work well. But Proton is not a guarantee that every game works. Anti-cheat systems, kernel-level software, unusual DRM, unsupported codecs, third-party launchers, and modding tools can all cause problems. Valve’s compatibility labels are useful starting points, but “Verified” or “Playable” does not promise perfect controls, readable text, ideal performance, or flawless multiplayer.

Windows is the safer compatibility platform

Windows handhelds support Steam, Xbox PC Game Pass, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, Ubisoft Connect, the EA app, conventional Windows utilities, and desktop software. If your library is spread across several stores, or if you need a Windows-only game, Windows avoids many SteamOS workarounds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also less consistent as a handheld interface. A Windows device is closer to a small gaming laptop with controls attached than to a traditional console. You may need to manage updates, drivers, manufacturer control software, pop-ups, account logins, desktop scaling, on-screen keyboard input, controller profiles, and launchers that were designed for a mouse and keyboard. Windows Central makes the same small-gaming-laptop comparison in its coverage of the ROG Ally X and MSI Claw 8 AI+. Read the comparison.

Need Better fit
Mostly Steam games SteamOS
Local Xbox PC Game Pass Windows
Epic Games Store or Battle.net Windows, unless you accept extra setup
Console-like navigation SteamOS
Competitive games with strict anti-cheat Usually Windows; verify each title
Desktop applications and Windows mod tools Windows

SteamOS can access cloud gaming through a browser or supported service, but that is not the same as installing PC Game Pass games locally. If local Game Pass installation is essential, buy a Windows handheld.

1. Steam Deck OLED: best SteamOS handheld

Buy the Steam Deck OLED if your library is mostly on Steam and you want the least frustrating handheld experience.

The Steam Deck OLED remains the safest recommendation for Steam-first players. Its advantages are not limited to the display: SteamOS integration, suspend and resume, controller navigation, compatibility information, community troubleshooting, accessories, and the size of the Steam Deck knowledge base all matter in daily use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why it works

  • A 7.4-inch OLED display provides strong contrast and deep blacks.
  • The 90Hz refresh rate improves responsiveness when a game can use it.
  • SteamOS feels more like a console interface than a Windows desktop.
  • The platform has extensive community support and compatibility information.
  • Storage is designed to be user-replaceable, although opening the device still requires care.

Where it falls behind

The OLED model improves the screen and overall battery characteristics, but it does not deliver a major new APU performance generation. Its hardware has a lower performance ceiling than the newer Ryzen Z1 Extreme, Intel Core Ultra, and other competing designs.

It is well suited to indie games, 2D titles, emulation, older AAA releases, and demanding games played around 30–45 frames per second with sensible settings. It is not the ideal choice if your main goal is current AAA gaming at 1080p and 60 frames per second.

Non-Steam launchers can be installed, but they may require manual configuration. Some multiplayer games with unsupported anti-cheat systems remain unsuitable. Do not buy the Deck OLED solely because it is the least expensive option if you depend on local PC Game Pass or Windows-only launchers.

2. Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS: best SteamOS performance upgrade

Choose the Legion Go S SteamOS if you want the SteamOS experience on a larger, more capable handheld.

ASUS ROG Xbox Ally – 7” 1080p 120Hz Touchscreen Gaming Handheld, 3-month Xbox Game Pass Premium included, AMD Ryzen Z2 A, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD, White
  • XBOX EXPERIENCE BROUGHT TO LIFE BY ROG The Xbox gaming legacy meets ROG's decades of premium hardware design in the ROG Xbox Ally. Boot straight into the Xbox experience just like a console.
  • XBOX GAME BAR INTEGRATION Launch Game Bar with a tap of the Xbox button or play your favorite titles natively from platforms like Xbox Game Pass, Steam, Epic Games, or Windows games on the go.
  • ALL YOUR GAMES, ALL YOUR PROGRESS Powered by Windows 11, the ROG Xbox Ally gives you access to your full library of PC games from Xbox and other game stores. With Xbox Play Anywhere, you can pick up right where you left off on your PC or Xbox and jump back into the game anytime.
  • NEVER STOP GAMING Powered by ultra-efficient AMD Ryzen Z2 A processor, the ROG Xbox Ally offers console-caliber performance and can game for hours, even away from a wall outlet.
  • GAME-READY STORAGE AND FAST MEMORY Store your full library and multitask seamlessly with 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 6400MHz RAM. The ROG Xbox Ally makes playing any game in the palm of your hand possible.

The Legion Go S SteamOS is not simply a larger Steam Deck. Reported configurations pair SteamOS with stronger hardware, an 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS display, VRR, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Hall Effect joysticks. The larger 16:10 screen provides more room for games and desktop-style interfaces than the Deck’s smaller, lower-resolution panel.

It suits players who want SteamOS convenience but expect more headroom for demanding games, higher refresh rates, or a larger display. Variable refresh rate is particularly useful because handheld games often fluctuate between frame-rate targets rather than holding a fixed 60 or 120 fps.

The compromises are size, weight, price, and model complexity. Confirm whether a listing is for the SteamOS or Windows version and check the exact processor, memory, storage, and regional configuration. Third-party SteamOS hardware support can also depend on the device model, firmware, current image, and Valve support status. PC Gamer selected the Legion Go S SteamOS as its best overall handheld-PC recommendation for 2025, while Windows Central placed it as a mid-range option—another example of how priorities change the ranking. See Lenovo’s Legion Go product hub.

3. ASUS ROG Ally X: best Windows handheld for most buyers

Buy the ROG Ally X if you need Windows compatibility but still want a relatively comfortable, balanced handheld.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The ROG Ally X combines the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme platform with 24GB of memory in the compared configuration, an 80Wh battery, and a 7-inch 1920×1080 IPS display with a 120Hz refresh rate and VRR. Those features make it a strong middle ground: faster and more flexible than the Steam Deck for many demanding games, but less bulky than the larger 8-inch competitors.

Its rounded grips and familiar Xbox-style control arrangement were preferred by Windows Central in its hands-on comparison. The 80Wh battery gives it more capacity than the original ROG Ally, though capacity is not the same as guaranteed endurance. Higher-power modes can consume that capacity quickly.

Limitations

  • Windows still brings desktop maintenance and launcher friction.
  • It does not have touchpads.
  • Windows Central’s comparison identifies its sticks as lacking Hall Effect designs.
  • Battery life varies substantially with game, brightness, refresh rate, TDP, and frame-rate target.

The Ally X is a good choice for Steam, Game Pass, Epic, Battle.net, and other Windows software. It is a poor fit for someone who mainly wants to turn on a device and navigate a console-style library without configuration. Check the official ASUS product page for the exact regional specification.

4. MSI Claw 8 AI+: best performance-focused option

Choose the MSI Claw 8 AI+ when demanding games, memory capacity, screen size, and connectivity matter more than price or portability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The compared configuration uses an Intel Core Ultra 7 258V processor, 32GB of RAM, a 1TB SSD, an 80Wh battery, and an 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS display with 120Hz refresh and VRR. It also has Hall Effect sticks and triggers and two Thunderbolt 4 ports.

Windows Central’s testing reported the Claw 8 AI+ ahead of the ROG Ally X in Cyberpunk 2077 tests. That result is an editorial comparison, not a universal promise: performance varies by game, driver, power mode, resolution, upscaling, and frame-generation settings. The same coverage showed why methodology matters, since Cyberpunk results changed significantly when AMD Fluid Motion Frames 2 was enabled on the comparison device. Review the test context.

The Claw is approximately 1.75 pounds compared with approximately 1.49 pounds for the Ally X in Windows Central’s measurements. Its larger body can provide a larger screen and substantial battery, but it is less comfortable for buyers with small hands or for anyone prioritizing travel weight. Hall Effect controls reduce the conventional potentiometer drift mechanism; they do not make every possible control failure impossible. Check MSI’s handheld range.

5. Lenovo Legion Go: best large-screen and flexible-control design

Buy the Lenovo Legion Go if detachable controls, a built-in kickstand, and mouse-like input are more valuable to you than compactness.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Legion Go’s distinctive design includes detachable controllers, a kickstand, a touchpad, mouse-wheel and click controls, and an FPS mode. Those features make it unusually useful for strategy games, older PC titles, desktop interaction, and docked play with a monitor, keyboard, or mouse.

The design is also its biggest compromise. The device is bulky, and its special controls add little value if you play only conventional controller-friendly games. Windows setup and maintenance remain part of the experience.

Do not confuse the original Legion Go with the Legion Go S or Legion Go 2. Windows Central discusses the Legion Go 2 as an 8.8-inch OLED model with VRR, up to 144Hz, a touchpad, mouse wheel, click controls, and FPS mode. A 2025 buying decision should identify the exact model rather than blend the specifications of different generations. Use Lenovo’s official hub to distinguish models.

Performance at realistic handheld settings

Handheld performance is determined by more than the processor name. Integrated graphics share system memory, and the result depends on the APU architecture, TDP, cooling, memory configuration, drivers, game build, resolution, upscaling, frame generation, and sustained thermals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Useful expectations

  • 800p or 720p at 30 fps: a sensible target for many demanding games on lower-power hardware.
  • 720p or 800p at 40 fps: often a good balance between smoothness and battery use when the game can sustain it.
  • 1080p or 1200p: useful for lighter games, but often too demanding at high settings in current AAA releases.
  • 1080p at 60 fps: realistic for many older, competitive, and less demanding games; not a universal AAA target.

A higher-resolution panel does not require native-resolution rendering. On an 8-inch 1920×1200 display, rendering internally at a lower resolution and using an upscaler can produce a better balance of sharpness, frame rate, and battery life.

How to compare performance properly

Benchmark numbers are meaningful only when the comparison records the same game build, graphics preset, resolution, TDP, upscaling mode, frame-generation setting, driver condition, and—where possible—ambient temperature and battery state. Frame generation can increase the displayed frame rate while adding latency or visual artifacts, so it should not be treated as equivalent to native rendered frames.

For AAA players, the MSI Claw 8 AI+ can be the strongest choice among these major 2025 contenders, while the ROG Ally X offers a more balanced Windows package. The Steam Deck OLED is better understood as a lower-power, lower-cost SteamOS device rather than a direct raw-performance competitor.

Displays: size, resolution, refresh rate, and VRR

Device Display highlights What they mean
Steam Deck OLED 7.4-inch OLED, 90Hz Excellent contrast and black levels; lower resolution than the Windows alternatives
ROG Ally X 7-inch 1920×1080 IPS, up to 120Hz, VRR, 16:9 Compact high-refresh display with smoother variable frame rates
Legion Go S 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS, 120Hz, VRR, 16:10 More physical screen area and room for desktop interfaces
MSI Claw 8 AI+ 8-inch 1920×1200 IPS, 120Hz, VRR, 16:10 Large viewing area, but with greater weight and bulk

VRR is often more useful than the maximum refresh-rate number. Many demanding games cannot sustain 120 or 144 fps, while VRR can make fluctuating frame rates appear smoother. Higher refresh rates can also use more power.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Battery life: compare conditions, not slogans

An 80Wh battery gives the ROG Ally X and MSI Claw 8 AI+ an advantage in capacity over smaller-battery handhelds, but it does not guarantee longer play time. A faster APU operating at a higher TDP can consume energy faster than a less powerful device.

Battery life changes with the game load, TDP, brightness, refresh rate, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use, upscaling, frame generation, background software, and whether the device is plugged in. Manufacturer “up to” figures and independent tests are not interchangeable. A credible result should name the game, brightness, resolution, power mode, frame-rate target, and test condition.

  • Convenient Rechargeable and Long - lasting Battery: The video game console is equipped with an 860mAh lithium - ion battery. It ensures that kids can play games without interruption, because there is no need for frequent battery replacement, which is very suitable for playing portable games outdoors. It is a great addition to the world of handheld games for children and can bring more fun to them.
  • Absolutely Surprising Gift: Our handheld game toy is a surprising gift for kids, teenagers, and even adults. It is the best gift for birthdays, Christmas, Halloween, and Thanksgiving. Customer satisfaction is our top priority. Our customer support team will serve you wholeheartedly.

For travel, budget for a USB-C Power Delivery charger or power bank capable of the handheld’s required wattage. A phone charger may charge slowly, fail to maintain performance, or allow the battery to drain while gaming.

Ergonomics can matter more than a few extra frames

A handheld weighing roughly 1.7 pounds can feel substantially heavier than a 1.3-pound device after an hour. Consider grip shape, hand size, thickness, trigger resistance, D-pad quality, stick placement, rear-button position, fan noise, and where heat reaches your hands.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • ROG Ally X: rounded grips, a familiar control layout, and two rear buttons. It is relatively compact for its battery size, but has no touchpads and no Hall Effect sticks in the cited comparison.
  • MSI Claw 8 AI+: Hall Effect joysticks and triggers, textured casing, and a large display. Its larger body and approximately 1.75-pound measured weight can reduce comfort for some users.
  • Lenovo Legion Go: detachable controllers, kickstand, touchpad, mouse controls, and FPS mode. Excellent flexibility, but more bulk.
  • Steam Deck OLED: strong controller integration and familiar SteamOS navigation, with a larger body than some compact Windows handhelds.

Controls marketed as Hall Effect should be treated as a design advantage, not a promise of “no stick drift.” They reduce one common failure mechanism, but do not eliminate every possible control fault.

Storage and upgradeability

Modern games can occupy 80–150GB or more, so 512GB fills quickly after the operating system, shader caches, updates, and a few large games. For a substantial AAA library, 1TB is a more practical starting point.

microSD cards are useful for indie games, emulation, older titles, and media. They can be slower for large AAA games and may have less convenient update behavior. Use a reputable high-speed card and back up data before formatting.

Many handhelds expose a replaceable M.2 SSD, but verify the exact model, SSD form factor, single-sided or double-sided clearance, thermal fit, recovery process, and warranty terms. The replacement procedure and operating-system recovery differ between SteamOS and Windows. Back up recovery media before opening the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compatibility guide

Game or software category Recommended direction Important qualification
Steam indies and older games Steam Deck OLED Usually the simplest experience
Steam-first RPGs and strategy games Steam Deck OLED or Legion Go S SteamOS Check text size, controls, and Proton behavior
Xbox PC Game Pass Windows Local installation is not the same as cloud streaming
Epic Games Store and Battle.net Windows SteamOS workarounds may require manual configuration
Strict anti-cheat multiplayer Usually Windows Verify the individual game; the operating system alone is not proof
Mods requiring Windows utilities Windows Some mod managers and tools do not work properly through Proton
Emulation Either, depending on emulator and system Configuration and legal ownership requirements still apply
Cloud gaming Either Network quality often matters more than local hardware

SteamOS risks include anti-cheat incompatibility, launchers that misbehave under Proton, unsupported video codecs, external middleware, and mods that depend on Windows utilities. Windows risks include update interruptions, driver regressions, poor controller detection, launchers opening in desktop mode, and games that still require a mouse or keyboard.

Choose by buyer type and budget

  • Lowest-cost SteamOS entry: Steam Deck OLED, subject to the live Valve configuration and regional availability.
  • Mid-range SteamOS upgrade: Legion Go S SteamOS for buyers willing to trade compactness for a larger display and stronger hardware.
  • Balanced Windows choice: ROG Ally X.
  • Premium performance: MSI Claw 8 AI+ if its price and size make sense for your games.
  • Used-market alternative: an older model can offer value, but inspect battery health, control condition, storage, charger, warranty, and exact operating system before buying.

Prices and availability vary by country, storage configuration, retailer, promotions, and date. Historical comparison prices—such as $799.99 for the ROG Ally X and $899.99 for the MSI Claw 8 AI+ in Windows Central’s comparison—should not be treated as live prices. The same applies to reported Legion Go S configurations. Check the official product page and retailer listing for the exact model before purchasing.

Accessories worth budgeting for

  • USB-C PD charger: choose sufficient wattage for the desired performance mode.
  • Protective case: cases are model-specific; Steam Deck OLED, ROG Ally X, and Legion Go cases are not interchangeable.
  • microSD card: useful for indies, emulation, and older games.
  • USB-C dock or hub: check display output, charging wattage, Ethernet, and VRR support.
  • Screen protector: confirm compatibility with the exact screen and case.
  • Compact Bluetooth keyboard: useful for Windows setup, launchers, mods, and desktop tasks.
  • Power bank: require USB-C PD and adequate output; check travel and airline limits.
  • Replacement SSD: verify form factor, clearance, recovery steps, and warranty implications.

Final recommendations

Buy the Steam Deck OLED if you are Steam-first, value simplicity, and are comfortable targeting sensible settings rather than maximum frame rates.

Buy the Legion Go S SteamOS if you want that SteamOS convenience with a larger 8-inch VRR display and more performance, and you can accept extra bulk and model-specific support questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Buy the ROG Ally X if you need Windows launchers, local Game Pass, or broad software compatibility and want the most balanced overall Windows design.

Buy the MSI Claw 8 AI+ if your priority is demanding-game performance, 32GB of memory, a large 120Hz VRR screen, and Thunderbolt 4 connectivity—not low weight or low cost.

Buy the Lenovo Legion Go if its detachable controllers, kickstand, touchpad, and FPS mode solve a specific problem for you. Otherwise, its size is difficult to justify over a more conventional handheld.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
