- Choose HostGMod if you specifically want VPS-style resource tiers rather than a simple slot package. Its listed plans range from 1 to 4 GB of RAM and include US and EU locations, but administration responsibility is more VPS-like than a fully abstracted game panel.
None of these descriptions is an independent performance test. CPU scheduling, storage latency, network routes, addon efficiency and player behavior can change the experience from one installation to another.

What you are actually buying
A rented Garry’s Mod server is a remote computer account plus tools for starting the game server, changing files and controlling access. A managed game-server plan usually supplies a web panel, console, file transfer and automated maintenance so you do not have to configure an operating system. A VPS gives you a broader environment and resource allocation, but you are more likely to handle updates, firewall rules, services, backups and troubleshooting yourself.
Garry’s Mod itself is flexible: a server can run a stock sandbox, a role-play framework such as DarkRP, Trouble in Terrorist Town (TTT), or a custom Lua gamemode. The administrative workload grows with the number of addons, the frequency of Workshop updates, database use, map size and the amount of custom scripting. A provider that advertises a high slot count is not automatically suitable for an addon-heavy server.
How much capacity does a GMod server need?
There is no reliable universal player-to-RAM formula in the available evidence. A 16-slot package is a sensible starting point for a small private or friend group; a public community may need 32, 64 or more slots, but only after observing addon and script behavior. Do not buy a larger package solely because its number looks safer: verify whether the plan changes CPU, RAM or other limits.
Use RAM and vCPU tiers when you need explicit resources
HostGMod’s displayed VPS tiers provide a concrete resource model: $10 per month for 1 GB RAM and 1 vCPU, $20 for 2 GB and 2 vCPUs, and $40 for 4 GB and 2 vCPUs. Those figures describe the provider’s plans, not a tested requirement for a particular player count. A VPS tier can be useful when you need to run supporting services or tune the operating system, but it also demands more administration.
Measure after installation
Begin with a conservative player limit, install the intended Workshop collection and gamemode, and watch memory, CPU, tick behavior and disconnects during a realistic event. Increase capacity only when the server remains stable with the actual addon load. Ask the host how to view resource graphs and whether changing slots or RAM requires migration or downtime.
Server location and latency
Pick the region closest to the majority of players, not the region closest to the administrator. A geographically central site generally shortens network paths, but the route used by an individual internet service provider can still produce different latency. Before paying, check the exact city or facility in the order flow; a provider’s broad “Europe” or “US” label does not identify a specific location.

Features that matter for addon-heavy servers
Workshop collections and synchronization
The official Garry’s Mod dedicated-server guidance documents the +host_workshop_collection startup parameter. It lets a server load a defined Steam Workshop collection rather than requiring you to copy every addon manually. A host panel may expose this as a collection ID field or installer, but the workflow is provider-specific. Ask whether collection changes are synchronized automatically, when the server downloads updates, and what happens if an addon is removed or renamed.
FastDL and custom content
FastDL can make custom maps and other downloadable files less painful for clients. Hexane explicitly lists FastDL. If you use another host, verify how custom content is uploaded, where it is served from, whether bandwidth is limited and whether the panel can generate or update the required configuration.
File and console access
File access is essential for Lua scripts, configuration files, maps and logs. Host Havoc lists FTP and a file manager; Hexane lists SFTP. A web console is also useful for controlled restarts and live administration, while a VPS may provide a normal shell instead. Confirm whether multiple staff members can have separate accounts and permissions: Hexane lists sub-user permissions and a scheduler.

Database support
DarkRP economies, ban systems, statistics and other addons may use MySQL. Host Havoc lists included MySQL. If a plan does not advertise a database, ask whether an external database is permitted, whether remote connections are restricted and whether database backups are included.

Backups and restores
Backups should cover configuration, Lua files, maps, Workshop settings and databases, not merely the operating-system image. Host Havoc lists off-site backups and data restores; Hexane lists daily off-site backups. Ask how many restore points are retained, whether you can trigger a restore yourself, and whether restoring overwrites current files. A backup that cannot be restored quickly is not a complete recovery plan.
DDoS protection and support
Host Havoc, Hexane, GPORTAL and HostGMod each advertise DDoS protection in the cited product descriptions. Protection levels and attack-response procedures are not standardized, so ask what traffic is covered and how an attack is communicated. GPORTAL lists 24/7 ticket support; the other pages describe support or panel features but do not provide a comparable, independently tested response-time measurement.

Managed hosting is usually easier for a public community
A managed plan bundles the recurring operational tasks that otherwise consume administrator time: starting and stopping the process, changing startup parameters, uploading files, applying Workshop content and restoring data. It also places network protection and hardware maintenance with the provider. This convenience is valuable when several people moderate the server but few are comfortable administering Linux.
Self-hosting or a VPS offers control
SteamCMD can install and update the dedicated server, and the official guide identifies Garry’s Mod’s app ID as 4020. A self-managed installation lets you choose the operating system, automation, monitoring and supporting services. The trade-off is responsibility for patching, firewalling, backups, crash recovery, abuse handling and network availability. The official guide states that macOS dedicated servers are no longer shipped; Linux installation is documented.
Choose self-hosting only if you can maintain the machine continuously and have an adequate connection or datacenter network. A home connection that works for a few friends may not withstand a public server’s upload demand or attacks.

Setting up a dedicated Garry’s Mod server
The following workflow follows the fundamentals documented by Facepunch. Panel labels differ, so use the equivalent fields supplied by your host.
- Provision the server or install SteamCMD. Select a location near your players and choose an initial slot or resource tier with headroom. On a self-managed Linux machine, install SteamCMD and use app ID
4020for Garry’s Mod. - Configure authentication. Create a Game Server Login Token (GSLT) as required by the official setup guidance, and store it outside public configuration screenshots or forum posts.
- Set the location and startup parameters. Confirm the server region and define the startup gamemode and map. The documented parameters include
+gamemodeand+map. - Load Workshop content. Add the collection identifier with
+host_workshop_collection, or use the provider’s Workshop installer. Test the collection with a private connection before advertising the server. - Upload configuration and custom files. Use the panel’s file manager, FTP or SFTP to add Lua files, maps and configuration. Keep a copy of every change so a failed addon update can be reversed.
- Start and test privately. Join with a small test group, verify that clients download required content, and check gamemode behavior, permissions, database connections and map changes.
- Schedule maintenance and backups. Set restart windows that match your community’s quiet hours. Confirm the backup schedule and perform a test restore before relying on the service for a public launch.
Facepunch’s guide carries an “A Long Time Ago” update label. It remains useful for these fundamentals, but version-sensitive details and panel-specific instructions should be checked against the current documentation.
Running DarkRP, TTT or another custom gamemode
DarkRP and TTT are not simply map selections; they depend on gamemode files, configuration, Workshop addons and often databases. Before ordering, ask the host whether you can set arbitrary startup parameters, upload custom Lua code, change the gamemode without support intervention and access server logs. A one-click installer is convenient, but it should not prevent you from editing files when a framework requires manual configuration.
For an addon-heavy community, test the complete Workshop collection at the intended player count. Check download times, missing content, script errors, entity limits and database writes. If the host cannot explain how to roll back a broken collection update, keep your own versioned copy.
Billing, cancellation and refunds
Compare the amount charged for the actual term, not only the headline monthly figure. GPORTAL’s displayed 90-day price cannot be compared directly with a one-month quote from another provider. Hexane states that cancellation is available anytime and shows a 72-hour money-back guarantee for new orders; verify the current conditions and exclusions at checkout. Host Havoc’s displayed starting price includes a billing-term qualification and possible add-ons. Every provider’s availability, currency and promotional presentation can change.

Rules for operating a community server
Facepunch’s Community Server and Hosting Guidelines, last updated 15 July 2025, state: “Yes – you are free to run private, unofficial or community servers for our Games.” The policy permits examples of monetization such as fees or subscriptions, donations, cosmetic items or enhancements, server currency, advertisements, sponsorships and product placements, subject to the guidelines and applicable law.

Label the server fairly and do not present it as official. Do not bypass ownership checks or provide Facepunch downloadable content to players who have not purchased it. Review the live policy before launching a monetized server because rules can change.
Common failure points and recovery steps
Players cannot join after an addon change
Disable the newest collection item or restore the last known-good backup, then test with a private connection. Confirm that the server and clients are receiving the same Workshop content and map files.
The server reaches its slot limit or becomes unstable
Reduce the advertised player limit while you inspect CPU and memory use, then profile addons and scripts. Moving to a larger slot package without identifying the bottleneck may not help; ask whether the upgrade changes RAM or CPU allocation.

Custom downloads are slow or incomplete
Check FastDL or the provider’s custom-content workflow, verify file paths and permissions, and test from a second network. Hexane advertises FastDL; other providers should explain their equivalent process.
A crash removes recent configuration
Use the most recent restore point, preserve the crash logs and reapply changes one at a time. Confirm whether the backup includes the database as well as game files.
Latency is higher than expected
Check the physical region selected in the order flow and compare routes from several player networks. If most players are in another continent, relocating the server is usually more meaningful than increasing slots.
A practical decision checklist
- List the countries or regions where most players connect.
- Estimate peak simultaneous players and add room for staff and events.
- Inventory Workshop addons, custom maps, Lua scripts and database requirements.
- Decide whether you need a managed panel or can administer a VPS.
- Require the file protocol, console access, scheduler, sub-user permissions and backup/restore behavior your staff will use.
- Compare the full renewal price, billing term, cancellation process and refund window.
- Run a private load and content test before publishing the address.

For a feature-rich managed setup, Host Havoc has the broadest advertised toolset and geographic coverage in this comparison.
