The most flexible way to host DayZ in 2026 is a self-hosted dedicated PC server. Install the server with SteamCMD, identify a configuration file with -config, choose a game port and Steam query port, allow the traffic through your firewall and router, then maintain updates, mods, persistence, and graceful shutdowns. A managed host removes much of the operating-system work, while console hosting follows a separate provider route.

This guide covers the complete decision and setup path without treating Bohemia Interactive’s minimum requirements as a performance guarantee. The official baseline is a dual-core 2.4 GHz Intel or 2.5 GHz AMD processor, 6 GB of RAM, and 2.5 GB of storage, with an SSD recommended for the installation and logs. A busy, heavily modded server can require more capacity; the baseline does not establish a safe player count or mod limit.

Your platform and willingness to administer a machine determine the right route.
Self-hosted PC server
You run the dedicated server on hardware you control. Bohemia’s published hosting instructions cover Linux, and its requirements also list Windows. You are responsible for the operating system, SteamCMD, firewall and NAT rules, server files, updates, mods, backups, logs, and safe shutdowns. This is the route with the most direct file and process control.

Managed game-server host
A provider supplies the machine and usually a control panel, but you still decide the server name, password, mission, persistence settings, mods, moderation rules, and maintenance schedule. Controls, supported platforms, capacity, prices, backups, and migration options differ by provider and plan, so verify those terms before paying. No general price or player-capacity promise applies to every host.
Private console server
Console administration does not use the PC SteamCMD procedure. DayZ’s official private-console FAQ, published in 2019, identifies Nitrado as the hosting partner and describes options such as password protection and camera perspective for that service at the time. Because that FAQ is old, check the current console purchase flow, plans, features, and availability before committing.
Hardware and network requirements for a PC server
Use the following figures as a published baseline, not as a tested recommendation for a specific population or mod collection.

You also need a network path that accepts inbound connections. A firewall, carrier-grade NAT, restrictive router, or provider policy can prevent players from reaching a correctly configured process. Port forwarding is therefore a network-specific task, not a universal copy-and-paste recipe.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
Bohemia’s documented Linux path uses SteamCMD. Create a non-root account for the service, install SteamCMD, and select a directory that the account can write to. The official instructions explicitly warn against running the server as root: a compromise has greater consequences when the process has unrestricted system privileges.
Install the stable branch
The documented stable app ID is 223350. Replace the example account and paths with your own values:

Keep the install directory separate from your personal files so that profiles, logs, Workshop downloads, and backups are easy to find.
Install the experimental branch
Bohemia’s example uses app ID 1042420 for the experimental branch. Substitute that ID in the same SteamCMD command when you intentionally want the experimental build. Do not mix stable and experimental files in one directory.
Use the same update operation later
The +app_update operation is also the documented update method. Stop the server cleanly, take a recoverable copy of important persistence data, run the update, review the release notes and mod requirements, and test before reopening the server to the wider community. The exact update behavior and command syntax can change with the current SteamCMD and DayZ build, so confirm the current official instructions when you update.
Create a configuration file and name it at launch
The filename itself is not special. The launch command tells DayZ which file to read. Bohemia documents serverDZ.cfg as an example and requires a -config option; if you omit that selection, mandatory settings are not read and the server will not launch.

Keep configuration and runtime data organized
Place the configuration in a directory the service account can read, then keep profiles and persistent storage in locations that are included in your backup plan. The profile path is where logs and related runtime files can be written. A predictable layout makes it easier to diagnose a failed update or restore a previous state.
Settings you should decide deliberately
- Server identity: Set a clear name and description so players can distinguish your server in the browser.
- Access control: Add a password for a private group and communicate it through a channel you control. A public server needs a moderation and ban policy in addition to technical settings.
- Mission: Select the mission appropriate to the map and build you are running.
- Persistence: Understand which options control saved world and player data before changing them. Treat this data as valuable and back it up before risky edits.
- Query visibility: Set
steamQueryPortin the configuration file. It serves a different purpose from the game port and is associated with server-browser visibility.
Configuration keys and allowed values are version-sensitive. Use the current Bohemia configuration reference for exact syntax rather than copying an old community file wholesale.

Launch the server
Bohemia’s Linux example uses a command shaped like this:
./DayZServer -config=serverDZ.cfg -port=2301 -BEpath=battleye -profiles=profiles -dologs -adminlog -netlog -freezecheckHere, -config=serverDZ.cfg selects the file, -port=2301 selects the game port for this example, -BEpath=battleye identifies the BattlEye files, and -profiles=profiles directs profiles and logs to the named directory. The logging and diagnostic switches request server, administrator, network, and freeze-check output.

Those are example values, not universal prescriptions. Choose a consistent pair, document it, and use the same values in your firewall and router rules. Confirm the current launch syntax against the official page whenever the server build changes.
Open the right traffic and test connectivity
Understand the two port roles
The game port is supplied as a launch parameter such as -port=2301. The Steam query port is configured inside the server file with steamQueryPort and helps the client browser discover server information. They are separate settings and may use different numbers.
Configure the host firewall
Create inbound rules for the ports and protocols required by the current DayZ server documentation, restricted to the server process or service where your firewall supports that level of control. Apply the rule on the network profile actually used by the host. A rule for the wrong profile, interface, or protocol can look correct while still blocking players.
Configure the router or upstream network
If the machine is behind a home router, forward the selected traffic to its fixed local address. Reserve that address in the router or assign it in a way that will not change after reboot. If your internet connection uses carrier-grade NAT, you may not be able to accept inbound connections at all; ask the provider about a public address or use a managed host.

Verify from outside the local network
Test with a friend on another connection rather than relying only on a local join. If the server appears in the browser but a connection fails, check the game-port path. If direct joining works but the browser listing does not, inspect the query-port value, firewall rule, and router forwarding. The Steam query setting improves discovery; it does not bypass NAT or firewall restrictions.
Let players join and handle required mods
Players can use Steam favorites, a direct connection, or the DayZ launcher. A PC connection guide published in December 2022 describes those routes and notes that the launcher can prompt players to install mods or downloadable content required by a server. Interface labels may have changed since that guide, so treat the current launcher as the authority for the exact clicks.
Publish a complete server identity
Give players the exact server name, address, game port, password if applicable, map, and mod collection. A short setup note should state whether the server is private, which perspective rules apply, and where maintenance announcements will appear.
Load mods consistently
Bohemia’s Linux guide demonstrates Steam Workshop downloads and loading mods through server launch arguments. Each mod can have its own dependency, load-order, server-side-file, and version requirements. Read the current instructions for every chosen mod and keep a written list of its identifier and required dependencies.
Do not assume that two mods are compatible because both install successfully. Add changes in small batches, start the server, inspect logs, and have a player test joining and persistence. Preserve a recoverable copy of the previous configuration and persistence data before a risky mod change. The available official material does not establish a universal compatibility matrix or a guaranteed safe update sequence for every collection.
Operate the server without corrupting persistence
Shut down gracefully
Bohemia recommends graceful shutdown to avoid negative effects on player characters and to allow server storage to save correctly. Do not routinely terminate the process or power off the host while players are active. Announce maintenance, stop admission if your tooling allows it, and use the supported graceful method for the current build.

Back up what matters
Back up persistence data, configuration, profiles, and any custom scripts or mod lists before updates and other high-risk changes. Keep at least one copy separate from the live directory so a damaged disk or bad edit cannot destroy both copies. The official guidance does not specify a universal interval; choose a cadence based on how valuable the world is and how often it changes, and verify that a restore is actually possible.

With -profiles=profiles and the logging switches enabled, review startup output, connection errors, mod-loading messages, and repeated warnings. Keep enough storage for logs and Workshop content. A server can appear healthy until a full disk prevents it from writing profiles or persistence data.
Plan maintenance communication
Record the DayZ build, mod versions, configuration changes, and backup location for each maintenance window. Tell players when the server will be unavailable and what changed when it returns. This simple change log makes it easier to identify which update introduced a startup or joining failure.

There is no universally best option. Choose self-hosting when direct control and hands-on administration matter more than convenience. Choose managed hosting when an always-on machine and network administration are the main obstacles. Choose the console route only after confirming that the current service supports your console, region, desired privacy controls, and expected player group.
Troubleshoot the failures that stop most first launches
The server closes immediately
- Check that the executable is being started from the correct installation directory.
- Confirm that the file named after
-config=exists and is readable. - Make sure the configuration contains the mandatory settings for the current build.
- Review the profile and startup logs for a malformed value, missing dependency, or permission error.
- Run the service under the dedicated non-root account and verify that it can write to profiles and storage directories.
The server runs locally but nobody outside can join
- Confirm the selected game port in the launch command matches the host-firewall rule and router forwarding.
- Check that the router forwards to the host’s current local address.
- Test from a genuinely external network.
- Ask the internet provider whether carrier-grade NAT or inbound filtering prevents hosting.
The server does not appear in the browser
- Check the
steamQueryPortvalue in the configuration file. - Allow the query traffic through the host firewall and router path required by your network.
- Try a direct connection to distinguish browser discovery from basic reachability.
- Remember that browser visibility is not proof that the game port is reachable.
Players are asked for missing mods or cannot finish joining
- Compare the server’s launch mod list with the collection you gave players.
- Check each mod’s current dependency and version instructions.
- Remove or roll back the last mod change, restore the pre-change backup if necessary, and test with a smaller collection.
- Inspect logs for load-order, signature, or server-side-file errors.
An update causes unexpected behavior
- Stop the server gracefully before updating.
- Preserve persistence data and configuration before changing the build or mods.
- Use the documented SteamCMD update operation and verify the branch and app ID.
- Test privately, then communicate the maintenance result before reopening to the full group.
What the official numbers do—and do not—tell you
The 6 GB RAM and 2.5 GB storage figures are minimum requirements published by Bohemia Interactive Community Wiki, along with the dual-core processor baseline and SSD recommendation. They are not a contemporary benchmark, a guaranteed capacity figure, or evidence that a particular mod list will run smoothly. Neither the cited material nor the official baseline establishes a universal player count, hardware tier for a 100-player community, or safe allocation for heavy scripting. Measure your own workload and scale conservatively.
Likewise, the example ports are configuration illustrations. Your ISP, router, firewall, and hosting provider determine whether those numbers are usable. Treat the stable app ID 223350 and experimental app ID 1042420 as branch-specific installation identifiers, and recheck them if Bohemia changes its distribution instructions.
