The reliable approach is to start with the control preset that matches your experience, then tune one response setting at a time while checking comfort, consistency, and the type of driving you do. Controller Steering Sensitivity affects wireless-controller steering response; Force Feedback Max. Torque and Force Feedback Sensitivity affect a wheel and have different jobs.
Use these as your starting framework: leave controller sensitivity at its default and make small changes, begin wheel tuning with comfortable torque and sensitivity rather than maximum strength, and treat Beginner, Intermediate, and Expert assists as starting points rather than performance rankings.

Quick starting settings by device
| Device or goal | Start here | What to change first |
|---|---|---|
| Wireless controller | Default Controller Steering Sensitivity | Move sensitivity in small increments after testing the same corner or short race |
| Force-feedback wheel | Comfortable Force Feedback Max. Torque and a moderate Force Feedback Sensitivity | Adjust torque and sensitivity separately; reduce either if vibration or fatigue becomes distracting |
| New to driving games | Beginner Assistance Preset | Remove or reduce one aid only after you can drive consistently |
| Some prior experience | Intermediate Assistance Preset | Check the preset after updates and personalize individual aids |
| Experienced player | Expert Assistance Preset | Keep only the aids that improve repeatability for your car and conditions |
These are tuning starting points, not official lap-time claims. Polyphony Digital’s manual explains what each control changes but does not publish one numeric setup that is fastest for all players.

Controller and wheel response
Before a race, open the pre-race Quick Menu and choose Settings → Controller Settings. This menu contains button assignment, Controller Steering Sensitivity, Force Feedback Max. Torque, and Force Feedback Sensitivity. The menu is available whether you use a wireless controller or a supported steering wheel, but the controls do not affect the same hardware in the same way.

Assists and transmission
In the same pre-race Quick Menu, open Settings → Assistance Settings. Here you can choose an assistance preset, configure individual aids, and select automatic or manual transmission. Changing an individual assistance option changes the displayed preset to Custom; that label means your current combination no longer exactly matches Beginner, Intermediate, or Expert.
Control styles
For a controller, open Options → Controllers. GT7 lets you select a steering method and a pedal-input method. The documented steering choices are the left stick, directional buttons, and motion sensor. Pedal choices are R2/L2, face buttons, and the right stick. You can change these choices after the initial control-type screen, so you are not permanently locked to the first selection.
Best controller settings: sensitivity, steering, and pedals
How Controller Steering Sensitivity works
Controller Steering Sensitivity changes how quickly the front tires respond to wireless-controller input. Lower values slow the response and make steering smoother. Higher values make the tire response faster and more sensitive. It is not the same control as wheel force feedback: changing controller sensitivity does not create or remove physical resistance in a steering wheel.
Start at the default value. Drive several laps in the same car and on the same track, then change the setting by a small amount. A lower value can help when the car feels nervous in fast bends or when tiny thumb movements produce too much steering. A higher value can help when you cannot turn the car quickly enough for a tight corner, but it can also make corrections abrupt. Do not change sensitivity and several driving aids at the same time; you will not know which change caused the improvement or problem.
Choosing a steering input
- Left stick: Use this when you want continuous steering control from a thumbstick.
- Directional buttons: Choose this if you prefer discrete left and right inputs and can manage the resulting steering response consistently.
- Motion sensor: Select this when tilting the controller feels more natural than moving a stick. Your comfort and ability to hold a steady angle matter more than a claimed universal advantage.
The official manual does not rank these methods as universally fastest. Pick the method that lets you repeat the same line and correction without hand strain.
Rank #2
- Premium Racing Wheel: Features a genuine leather wheel cover for a comfortable and authentic racing experience
- High-Precision Force Feedback: TRUEFORCE up to 1000 Hz provides responsive and intense force feedback for an immersive gaming experience
- Dual-Motor Pedal System: Responsive pedals with dual clutch launch control for quick gear changes and smooth acceleration
- PC and Xbox Compatible: Works with PC and Xbox One for a versatile gaming setup
- Easy Setup and Connection: USB connectivity allows for simple plug-and-play setup and connection
Choosing a pedal input
- R2/L2: Use the triggers when you want progressive throttle and brake travel from the controller.
- Face buttons: Select this if button presses are easier for you to reach or control.
- Right stick: Choose this when you prefer a separate analog control for throttle and braking.
Test the combination of steering and pedal styles together. A steering method that feels precise can still be a poor choice if your selected pedal layout causes accidental throttle, delayed braking, or hand repositioning in a corner.
A repeatable controller tuning procedure
- Choose one familiar car, preferably a road car or race car you already understand.
- Drive a short run with the default Controller Steering Sensitivity and your preferred steering and pedal styles.
- Identify one symptom: slow turn-in, twitchy corrections, or difficulty holding a constant radius.
- Change only Controller Steering Sensitivity by a small increment.
- Drive the same section again, checking steering smoothness, corner entry, and exit control.
- Keep the change only if it improves repeatability, not merely one fast lap.
Best steering-wheel settings: torque and sensitivity
Force Feedback Max. Torque
Force Feedback Max. Torque sets the wheel’s maximum torque. The GT7 manual notes that higher values can make tire response feel duller when cornering hard. In practice, treat this as a strength-and-detail control, not a simple “more is better” slider. Increase it only while you can still feel changes in grip and turn the wheel accurately. Lower it if the wheel becomes tiring, masks smaller texture changes, or produces uncomfortable jolts.

Force Feedback Sensitivity
Force Feedback Sensitivity controls the resistance as a turn begins. Higher values make the wheel more responsive to changes in steering; lower values make straight-line steering gentler. Because this effect is different from maximum torque, tune it separately. A wheel can be strong but slow to build resistance, or responsive at turn-in without requiring a high peak torque.
Safe wheel-tuning sequence
- Center the wheel and confirm that the correct steering controller is selected.
- Set Force Feedback Max. Torque to a level you can hold comfortably for a full race.
- Set Force Feedback Sensitivity, then drive a familiar series of slow, medium, and fast corners.
- Change only one of the two controls after each run.
- Reduce the setting immediately if you experience painful force, excessive vibration, clipping-like loss of detail, or difficulty correcting a slide.
- Retest after changing cars. A heavy, high-grip car and a light road car can make the same wheel setting feel very different.
The objective is readable information and repeatable control. The official documentation explains the direction of each effect but does not establish a single numeric wheel preset for every model.
Assistance presets: Beginner, Intermediate, Expert, and Custom
Beginner
Beginner is framed for players new to driving games. It is a sensible starting point if you are still learning braking points, racing lines, throttle control, or the behavior of a particular drivetrain. Keep the preset while you build consistency rather than removing aids solely because a guide says assists must be off.
Rank #3

- Premium Control: The Driving Force feedback racing wheel provides a detailed simulation of driving a real car, with helical gearing delivering smooth, quiet steering and a hand-stitched leather cover
- Customizable Pedals: These pressure-sensitive nonlinear brake pedals provide a responsive, accurate braking feel on a sturdy base - with adjustable pedal faces for finer control
- 900-Degree Rotation: Lock-to-lock rotation of the Driving Force means you can turn the wheel around two and a half times, hand over hand on wide turns - just like a real F1 race car
- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
Intermediate
Intermediate is intended for a player with some practice. It provides a bridge between substantial assistance and a more hands-on setup. If you can complete races without frequent spins or missed braking points, remove or weaken one aid at a time and check whether your consistency improves.
Expert
Expert is framed for experienced players. It does not mean every assistance option must be disabled in every car. Weather, tire condition, drivetrain layout, race length, and your ability to repeat inputs still matter. An aid that costs a little peak speed can be worthwhile if it prevents repeated mistakes over a long race.
Custom
Any individual change to a preset creates a Custom setup. That is expected, not an error. Record the few options you changed so you can reproduce the setup for another car or restore the preset later.
Transmission choice
Driving Options provides Automatic and Manual transmission. Manual is required for the gear-stick and clutch operation described in the manual. Automatic can be the more consistent choice while you are learning a track, while manual gives you control over shift timing and engine braking once you can operate it without compromising steering or braking.
Update 1.31 changed preset defaults
Gran Turismo 7 Update 1.31 changed several assistance defaults. For Intermediate, Countersteering Assistance changed from Strong to Weak and Traction Control changed from 5 to 3. For Expert, Countersteering Assistance changed from Strong to Off.

The notice also says that previously selected Intermediate or Expert settings were not overwritten. Instead, a player’s existing values could remain in place while the displayed preset became Custom. Therefore, selecting a preset on a system that has been updated does not guarantee that every value matches the current default. Open Assistance Settings and inspect each option before comparing your setup with a guide or another player.
Wheel compatibility and console restrictions
Before buying or troubleshooting a wheel, verify the exact model and console listed in GT7’s online manual. The documented steering-wheel controllers are:
| Manufacturer | Models listed by the GT7 manual | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Thrustmaster | T-GT, T-GT II, T248, T300RS, T500RS, T150 Force Feedback, T80 Racing Wheel, T598 | The T248 operates as T-GT-compatible; the T500RS listing is PS4 only |
| Logitech | G PRO Racing Wheel, G29 Driving Force, G923 Racing Wheel | Confirm the console and connection method for your exact model |
| Fanatec | CSL Elite Racing Wheel, GT DD Pro / Extreme, Podium | Confirm the console and wheel-base configuration before purchase |
Compatibility is not interchangeable across every console generation or wheel variation. Check the current manual entry for your model rather than assuming that a similarly named product has identical support.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.G923 vibration and firmware considerations
GT7’s G923 compatibility notice explains that TRUEFORCE reproduces engine and wheel-slip vibrations. If the vibration is excessive or loud, go to Options → Controllers → Vibration Function and lower Vibration Strength. The notice lists 100 as the default value. That number is a documented setting default, not a recommended strength for every player.
The same notice describes checking connected steering-controller inputs and calibrating pedal sensitivity under Options → Controllers → Steering Controller Settings. If pedal input reaches full throttle or brake before the physical pedal is fully depressed, recalibrate before changing race assists.

Update 1.65 added simulated friction to select force-feedback steering-wheel controllers and advises updating steering-controller firmware. The notice extract does not identify every affected model, so check the update information and your manufacturer’s current firmware instructions rather than assuming that every wheel receives the same change.
Gear sticks, clutch pedals, and manual shifting
To use a gear stick and clutch, choose Manual (MT) in Driving Options. A gear stick by itself uses auto-clutch mode. Pressing the clutch pedal activates full manual operation. The manual states that the gear stick must be installed to use the clutch pedal, and some drivetrain types cannot use the clutch even when manual transmission is available.
The TH8 RS is named in the manual as an example of a compatible gear stick. Install and map the shifter before a race, then verify neutral, reverse, each forward gear, and clutch travel in the controller settings. If the car refuses a shift, first check that Manual (MT) is selected and that the shifter is recognized; changing force feedback will not solve a transmission-input problem.
Diagnosing common problems
The controller feels twitchy
- Lower Controller Steering Sensitivity slightly.
- Check that you did not switch unintentionally from stick to directional-button or motion-sensor steering.
- Retest with the same car and tire condition before changing assists.
The controller feels too slow in hairpins
- Raise Controller Steering Sensitivity by a small increment.
- Check your steering range and thumb position before making a large change.
- Keep the value that lets you turn quickly without causing instability in fast corners.
The wheel is strong but lacks detail
- Reduce Force Feedback Max. Torque slightly and retest.
- Adjust Force Feedback Sensitivity separately to change turn-in resistance.
- Confirm that firmware is current, particularly after an update that changes force-feedback behavior.
The wheel vibrates or becomes uncomfortable
- Lower Max. Torque or Sensitivity rather than continuing to drive through painful forces.
- For a G923, reduce Vibration Strength under Options → Controllers → Vibration Function.
- Check mounting, cables, and calibration before assuming the game setting is the only cause.
A preset does not match a guide
Inspect every assistance option. Update 1.31 preserved previously selected Intermediate and Expert values and could label them Custom, so the visible preset name may not represent the current values.
A practical method for finding your own best setup
- Choose a reference: Use one car, one track, and a repeatable section with a slow corner, a medium bend, and a fast turn.
- Stabilize the hardware: Confirm the control style, wheel model, firmware, pedal calibration, and transmission mode.
- Start from the appropriate preset: Beginner, Intermediate, or Expert according to your current experience.
- Change one variable: Controller Steering Sensitivity for a controller; Max. Torque or Sensitivity for a wheel; one assistance option for driving aids.
- Judge consistency: Compare braking points, minimum speed, steering corrections, and clean exits over several laps, not one lucky run.
- Check comfort: A setting that produces a marginally quicker lap but causes hand fatigue, pain, or concentration loss is a poor race setting.
- Save a record: Note the device, car type, transmission, assistance options, and response values so you can restore the setup after experimenting.
This process respects what the official documentation actually establishes: each control has a defined effect, but no universal numeric combination has been published for every player and hardware setup.
