For the original PC release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, start with the frame limiter on, choose a resolution your monitor and game build explicitly support, and adjust Visual FX Quality and anti-aliasing gradually. Check the picture after enabling widescreen because the classic port can stretch a 4:3 image rather than compose a genuinely correct 16:9 view.
These recommendations apply to the classic/original PC game, not Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas – The Definitive Edition. The two products have separate requirements and different compatibility considerations, so identify your edition before changing files or applying a fix.

Confirm which San Andreas PC release you own
Settings advice is only useful when it matches the executable being run. The classic PC release has its own display menu and a documented 30-frames-per-second limiter. Rockstar publishes a separate requirements page for The Definitive Edition, which is a different product rather than an update to the classic configuration.

A reliable starting profile
There is no source-supported universal preset that is “best” for every PC. The classic manual describes what each control does but does not publish comparative benchmarks for different processors, graphics cards, monitors or resolutions. Use the following as a conservative starting profile, then make one change at a time.
| Setting | Starting choice | Reason and adjustment rule |
|---|---|---|
| Frame Limiter | On | The classic game normally caps itself at 30 frames per second. The manual says unlocking the rate is not a guaranteed performance improvement and can make play more variable. Leave it on while diagnosing stutter or timing problems. |
| Resolution | A mode listed as supported by both the game build and the monitor | Use the monitor’s native mode when it is available and stable for the clearest desktop-sized image, but do not force an unsupported mode. If the display goes blank, return to the last known-good mode. |
| Color depth | The highest stable depth offered by the game and display | The manual treats color depth as a display control, not as a universal quality target. If a mode causes corruption or fails to start, choose another supported combination. |
| Visual FX Quality | Begin low or moderate when troubleshooting; raise in small steps | This control changes the depth and amount of in-game effects. Increase it only after the game remains stable at the selected resolution and limiter setting. |
| Anti-aliasing | Off or the first available mode while establishing stability | Higher modes can smooth jagged edges, but the manual does not quantify their cost on modern hardware. Add anti-aliasing only when the image improvement is visible and performance remains consistent. |
| Widescreen | Enable only after checking the resulting proportions | The built-in switch can force a 4:3 resolution into a 16:9 shape. Verify the picture rather than assuming the toggle provides correct widescreen composition. |
This is a testing order, not a benchmark-derived preset. A powerful modern PC may still encounter a compatibility issue, while an older system may be perfectly playable at a lower effects level.
Frame limiter: the most important stability choice
The original game is normally capped at 30 frames per second. That cap is part of the classic PC configuration, not a measurement of what a modern graphics card can render. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas PC Manual explicitly cautions that unlocking the rate “will not magically make Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas run better, but rather may make your experience ‘more variable’.” It also states, “We do not recommend un-locking the frame rate.” You can read the configuration guidance in the official PC manual.

PCGamingWiki documents timing-related problems when the frame rate is not limited. In practical terms, an unlocked counter can show a larger number while movement, physics or input timing feels less consistent. Treat unlocking as a compatibility experiment for a specific build, not as the default cure for low performance.
When to leave the limiter on
- Use it while diagnosing hitching, uneven motion, unusually fast behavior or inconsistent input.
- Keep it on when you want the game’s documented timing behavior and do not have a version-specific reason to change it.
- Re-enable it after testing an unlocked mode if the game becomes less predictable.
When an unlocked rate is worth testing
Only test an unlocked rate when you have a build-specific compatibility reason and a repeatable way to compare behavior. Record the original setting, change nothing else, and compare the same route or scene. If the game feels more variable, restores poorly, or develops timing anomalies, return to the limiter. A higher displayed frame count by itself does not establish smoother play.
Rank #2
- Features exclusive to the PC version include the ability to edit the lead character's appearance and switch to a radio station that plays MP3 files stored on the computer. Perhaps the biggest change is the improved visuals, now optimized specifically for high-performance systems. Players will be able to view the game with new 32-bit textures, longer viewable distances, and support for multiple display resolutions. Furthermore, players can watch replays of the last 30 seconds of action and then e-mail them to friends.
- Offers support for 32-bit textures and multiple display resolutions for sharper visuals than the PS2 game Import your favorite tunes for play on a custom radio station, or listen to over nine hours of '80s music
- Record the last 30 seconds of stunts, shootouts, or fiery crashes and show them to friends via e-mail
- Customize the look of Tommy Vercetti and his threads with the player skin editor
- Supports EAX 3.0 audio for enveloping sound effects and music
Resolution and color depth
Resolution determines how many pixels the game sends to the display; color depth controls the display format offered by the classic configuration. The manual describes both as selectable display controls but does not identify one best combination for all hardware.
Choose a supported mode first
- Open the classic game’s display or graphics configuration screen.
- List the resolutions and color-depth combinations the game actually offers.
- Select a mode that your monitor accepts. If the monitor reports an unsupported signal, return to the previous mode rather than repeatedly forcing the same setting.
- Apply the change and check the whole picture: menus, HUD, subtitles, map and gameplay.
A monitor’s native resolution generally gives the cleanest one-to-one desktop presentation when the game supports it, but compatibility takes priority. An unsupported high resolution can produce a black screen or fail to launch, while a lower supported mode may be the quickest route back to a usable configuration.
Do not confuse resolution with aspect ratio
A 16:9 resolution number does not guarantee a correctly composed 16:9 image in this port. The classic game can stretch its rendered 4:3 image at widescreen resolutions. Check the widescreen result separately rather than treating resolution selection as an aspect-ratio fix.
Visual FX Quality: tune effects before chasing extreme resolution
The manual says Visual FX Quality changes the depth and amount of in-game effects to suit the player’s PC configuration. It is therefore the most direct documented control for reducing graphics workload without changing the game’s basic display mode.
Performance-first adjustment
- Keep the frame limiter on and use a supported resolution.
- Set Visual FX Quality to a low or moderate level while checking whether the original problem remains.
- Play through the same short route or scene for each test. Look for sustained hitching, pauses when effects appear and unstable frame pacing.
- Raise the setting one step only when the previous level is stable. Stop at the first level where effects improve the image without bringing the problem back.
This incremental sequence is practical troubleshooting guidance, not a measured benchmark. The correct stopping point depends on the installed build, background load, display mode and hardware.

What a lower setting changes
Lower values reduce the depth or amount of effects the game draws. That can make scenes look less rich, but it is preferable to lowering every display control at once because you can identify which change helped. If reducing effects does nothing, restore the previous value and investigate timing, aspect ratio or compatibility instead of continuing to remove visual detail.

Anti-aliasing smooths the stair-step edges that are especially visible on thin geometry, railings and diagonal lines. The classic manual provides selectable anti-aliasing modes but does not establish a universally ideal mode or a quantified performance cost across current graphics hardware.
A controlled way to choose a mode
- Start with anti-aliasing off or at the first available mode while establishing a stable baseline.
- Capture a mental reference of edges in the same scene, preferably with distant objects and thin lines.
- Enable the next mode, keep the resolution and Visual FX Quality unchanged, and revisit that scene.
- Keep the higher mode only if the reduction in jagged edges is visible and motion remains consistent. Otherwise, use the lower mode.
There is no benefit in selecting the strongest available mode merely because the option exists. On a display where the difference is difficult to see, the additional workload is not buying a meaningful improvement. Conversely, if edges are distracting and the game remains stable, anti-aliasing can be a better image-quality upgrade than forcing an unsupported resolution.
Widescreen and stretched-image checks
The manual says the Widescreen toggle can force a 4:3 resolution into a 16:9 aspect ratio. PCGamingWiki also warns that the classic game normally stretches its image at widescreen resolutions. Those statements mean the switch can change the shape of the output without guaranteeing correct widescreen framing in every build.
How to check the result
- Look at circular or nearly circular objects, such as the radar, wheels and round signage. They should not appear visibly oval.
- Check character proportions and building edges at the left and right sides of the screen.
- Confirm that menus, subtitles and the HUD are not cut off or pushed outside the visible area.
- Compare the same camera view with widescreen on and off. If the image is simply wider but visibly compressed or expanded, the toggle has stretched the frame rather than corrected the composition.
If the picture is distorted, do not keep changing unrelated quality settings. Consult a widescreen compatibility reference for the exact installed build. A community widescreen fix may be relevant, but its behavior and compatibility must be verified for that build; do not assume that a fix made for one executable works with another.

A step-by-step optimization workflow
Use this order whenever you are starting fresh or troubleshooting inconsistent performance. It keeps each change attributable and makes recovery straightforward.
- Identify the edition and build. Confirm that you are running the classic/original PC release, not The Definitive Edition, and note the installed build before applying any patch or configuration file.
- Restore a known baseline. If you have made many changes, return to the game’s ordinary display options or back up the configuration before testing. Avoid changing several variables between launches.
- Turn the frame limiter on. Retest the exact scene that exposed the problem. This establishes the documented timing-oriented baseline.
- Select a supported resolution and color depth. Prefer a clear monitor mode that the game lists and the display accepts. Apply it and verify menus as well as gameplay.
- Set Visual FX Quality conservatively. Lower it first if the problem is performance-related. Raise it in small steps only after stability is established.
- Add anti-aliasing gradually. Compare one mode at a time and keep the first mode that produces a visible improvement without inconsistent motion.
- Check widescreen separately. Enable it only after the other controls are stable, then inspect proportions, HUD placement and framing.
- Document the working combination. Write down the edition/build, resolution, color depth, limiter state, effects level, anti-aliasing mode and widescreen state. That record makes it easier to undo a change or reproduce the result.
Practical profiles for different priorities
These profiles describe priorities rather than fixed numerical presets. The source material does not provide benchmark results that would justify promising a particular frame rate or effects level.
| Priority | Frame limiter | Resolution and aspect ratio | Visual FX Quality | Anti-aliasing | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Maximum stability | On | Supported, conservative display mode; verify widescreen visually | Low or moderate, then increase only if stable | Off or first mode | Diagnosing stutter, timing problems, crashes or uncertain compatibility |
| Balanced image | On | Highest clear mode that the build and monitor accept; widescreen only after an aspect-ratio check | Increase until the first sign of instability, then step back | Use the highest visibly useful mode that remains consistent | Normal play when you want more effects without sacrificing predictable timing |
| Image-quality experiment | On initially; test unlocking only for a specific compatibility reason | Try a sharper supported mode, then verify geometry and HUD | Raise in small steps | Compare modes in the same scene | Evaluating whether extra detail is genuinely visible on your display |
Troubleshooting by symptom
Uneven motion, stutter or strange timing
Turn the frame limiter on first and retest. The classic manual warns against unlocking it, and PCGamingWiki records timing-related issues when the rate is not limited. If the problem remains, return Visual FX Quality and anti-aliasing to conservative values without changing the resolution at the same time. If only an unlocked configuration exhibits the symptom, keep the limiter enabled.
Black screen or “unsupported signal” after changing resolution
The selected mode may not be accepted by the monitor or by that game build. Revert to the last known-good resolution and color-depth combination. Do not infer that a modern graphics card makes every legacy mode valid; the game and display still have to agree on the signal.

Check the Widescreen toggle and inspect round objects and HUD placement. The classic port can stretch a 4:3 image at widescreen resolutions. If the proportions remain wrong, use a version-specific compatibility reference or fix rather than repeatedly changing Visual FX Quality or anti-aliasing.

Jagged edges but stable performance
Increase anti-aliasing one mode at a time and compare the same scene. Keep the change only when the smoothing is visible on your display. If the improvement is negligible, leave the lower mode and preserve the simpler configuration.
Performance problems after increasing effects
Reduce Visual FX Quality before changing several other controls. The manual identifies it as the setting that changes effect depth and amount. If the lower value does not help, restore it and check the frame limiter, resolution support and build compatibility instead of assuming every issue is a graphics-quality problem.
Problems on a new or unusually powerful PC
Modern hardware does not guarantee that every classic-port configuration will work. Rockstar’s classic PC requirements guidance includes compatibility notes for certain hardware classes. Check the official requirements page and version-specific compatibility references before forcing an unsupported mode.
How to compare changes without fooling yourself
Because the manual provides no comparative benchmark, use a repeatable visual and timing check rather than relying on a single glance at a frame counter.
- Choose one short route or repeatable scene containing movement, distant geometry and effects.
- Change one setting only. Keep the edition, build, resolution, limiter and other options unchanged.
- Observe both image quality and consistency. A sharper still image is not an improvement if motion becomes uneven.
- Repeat the test after relaunching the game. A setting that works once but fails on the next launch is not a dependable baseline.
- Record the exact option values and whether widescreen proportions remain correct.
This method cannot produce a universal benchmark, but it can tell you which compromise suits your own monitor and hardware while keeping the result reproducible.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Applying Definitive Edition advice to the classic release. They are separate products with separate requirements.
- Unlocking the frame rate as the first “smoothness” fix. The official manual specifically discourages assuming it will improve performance.
- Forcing a resolution because it is numerically higher. Unsupported modes can cause a blank display or failed launch.
- Assuming a widescreen toggle means correct widescreen composition. Inspect geometry and HUD placement after enabling it.
- Changing several settings at once. You then cannot tell whether the limiter, effects, anti-aliasing or display mode caused the improvement or failure.
- Treating the 30-fps cap as a benchmark. It is the game’s documented normal limit, not a claim about modern hardware performance.
- Assuming powerful hardware removes compatibility concerns. Legacy software can still reject particular hardware or display combinations.
Bottom line
For the classic PC release, the dependable starting point is the frame limiter on, a supported monitor mode, conservative Visual FX Quality and anti-aliasing, followed by gradual increases while checking stability. Treat widescreen as a visual verification step because the port may stretch 4:3 imagery. If a problem survives that process, identify the exact edition and build and consult compatibility guidance for that version instead of assuming a higher frame rate or resolution is automatically better.
