The PlayStation Store lists a PS5 version; the Xbox Store lists an Xbox Series X|S-optimized version with Smart Delivery. Xbox also lists cloud play for eligible Game Pass tiers, but you still need to purchase the game.
The two consoles differ most in how clearly they describe co-op. Xbox explicitly lists two-to-three-player local and online co-op. PlayStation advertises online play for up to three players and split-screen co-op, but the same listing separately shows a generic “1 – 2 players” field, so its maximum local player count is not settled by the store page.

What you need before starting
Use the Legacy Edition listing rather than assuming that an older Xbox 360 or PlayStation release will provide the current-console features. Store listings and subscription catalogs can change by region, so confirm the edition and availability shown in your own console store before paying.

- A console account that can access the relevant PlayStation or Xbox store.
- An additional controller if you intend to try couch co-op. The PS5 listing confirms DualSense vibration support; it does not establish a three-player local setup.
- The online subscription required by your platform if you are playing over the internet.
Install the newest game update before beginning a campaign. Aspyr’s Patch 1 note, dated September 15, 2026, says the patch addresses equipment and gear-loss problems, a progression blocker in Fornost, and general stability. Those are the issues specifically named in the note; installing it does not establish that every possible bug has been removed.

“Up to three” on PlayStation refers to the online listing. It should not be read as proof that three people can play locally, because the same page presents a conflicting local-player field.
How to set it up on PS5
- Open the PlayStation Store and find the PS5 Legacy Edition. Check that the product page identifies the PS5 version before purchasing.
- Purchase and download it. After the transaction, start the download from the store page or your game library and wait for the installation to finish.
- Check for an update before launching your campaign. From the game tile in the PS5 library, use the console’s option to check for updates. Apply the newest available patch, then restart the game if the console requests it.
- Launch from the library. On first start, open the in-game controls or options screen and review the current button layout. The original Xbox 360 manual describes the older release and should not be treated as a definitive control map for this edition.
- For online co-op, verify PlayStation Plus first. The PlayStation listing requires PS Plus for online play. Each participant should be signed in to a PlayStation account with the needed access, then use the game’s online or fellowship menu to host or join a session.
- For split-screen, connect the additional controller before selecting the co-op option. The store description advertises split-screen co-op, but its separate “1 – 2 players” field leaves the maximum local count unresolved. Test the local configuration with the controllers and edition you own rather than promising a three-player couch session.
If a friend cannot join online, first confirm that the host and guest are both running the PS5 Legacy Edition with the same current update and that the host’s PlayStation Plus access is active. A store listing does not establish cross-play with Xbox, so a PlayStation player should not expect an Xbox friend to appear in the invite list.
How to set it up on Xbox Series X|S
- Open the Xbox Store and select the Legacy Edition. The listing identifies the game as optimized for Xbox Series X|S and supports Smart Delivery, so buy the version shown for your console rather than searching for a separate Series X-only product.
- Install the game from your library. Smart Delivery supplies the applicable console version. Let the download and installation complete before starting a fellowship.
- Apply the newest update. Use the game’s update command in the Xbox library and wait for the console to report that the installation is current. This is particularly important because Aspyr’s September 15, 2026 Patch 1 note identifies gear-loss, a Fornost progression block and stability work.
- Review the controls in-game. Open the game’s own control menu after launching. The legacy Xbox 360 manual is useful historical background, but it is not an authoritative map of every control in the 2026 Legacy Edition.
- Choose local or online co-op. Xbox’s listing explicitly supports two-to-three-player local co-op and two-to-three-player online co-op, with shared/split screen for local play. Connect the controllers for a couch session, or use the game’s online fellowship flow to invite or join friends.
- Check multiplayer access for an online session. Xbox requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for online console multiplayer. If the game page offers cloud play through one of those tiers, remember that the listing still requires a purchase of the game itself.
Cloud play can be useful when you do not want to wait for a local installation, but availability is tied to the listing and your region. If the cloud button is absent, use the installed copy instead; do not assume that every account or territory receives the same catalog presentation.

Choosing between local, online and cloud play
Local split-screen
Local play keeps the session on one console and television. Xbox gives a clear two-to-three-player specification. PlayStation confirms split-screen in the description but presents a contradictory generic player count, so the safe approach is to connect the controllers you have and verify the lobby’s available slots before arranging a full group.
Online co-op
Online co-op is the straightforward option when players are in different homes. On PS5, the listing advertises up to three online players and requires PS Plus. On Xbox, the listing advertises two-to-three online players and requires Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for console multiplayer. Each player should use the same current-console edition and update, then join through the game’s online fellowship controls.
Cloud play on Xbox
The Xbox page lists the game as cloud playable for eligible Game Pass tiers. Cloud access does not replace ownership: the listing says the game purchase is required. It also depends on the current catalog and your region, so treat the cloud icon on your own store page as the authoritative availability check.

Can PS5 and Xbox players play together?
The official PlayStation and Xbox listings used for this guide do not state that the game supports cross-play. They describe each platform’s own local and online modes but do not identify a shared matchmaking pool. Until a platform or publisher source confirms otherwise, plan sessions within one console family: PS5 with PS5 players, or Xbox Series consoles with Xbox players.

Who you play and how the campaign works
War in the North is presented as an action RPG built around three heroes:
- Eradan, a ranger.
- Andriel, an elf loremaster.
- Farin, a dwarf champion.
The official descriptions emphasize switching among the characters, improving skills and gear, and fighting the forces of Agandaûr. In co-op, the fellowship concept lets players combine the heroes’ different roles rather than choosing three identical characters. The exact button layout, timing and menu behavior should be read from the controls screen in your installed Legacy Edition, because the older Xbox 360 manual does not document every change or platform-specific input in the current release.

A practical first-session plan
- Finish the update check before creating a long-term campaign.
- Have every player choose a profile and controller before opening the fellowship session.
- Use the in-game controls menu to identify movement, attack, ability, interaction and character-switch commands instead of relying on memories of the original release.
- At the first checkpoint, confirm that each player can move, fight and access the expected gear or skill screens.
- Keep the campaign host consistent when possible. If a progression or gear problem appears, record the location and reload from the most recent checkpoint after confirming that all consoles are patched.
Update and troubleshooting checklist
The game shows an old version or will not update
- Close the game completely rather than leaving it suspended.
- Use the console library’s check-for-update command on the installed title.
- Confirm that the product is the Legacy Edition for your console, not an older backward-compatible listing.
- Restart the console after an update completes, then check the version again from the game’s information screen if available.
Equipment or gear appears to disappear
Gear-loss issues are among the problems named in Aspyr’s Patch 1 note. Make sure the update is installed before continuing. If an item is still missing, avoid overwriting every available save or checkpoint; note when it disappeared and try the most recent uncorrupted checkpoint. The patch note establishes that the issue was addressed, not that every existing save has been repaired.
Progress is blocked in Fornost
The same patch note identifies a Fornost progression blocker. Update first, then reload the latest checkpoint and repeat the objective. If the block persists on a patched copy, preserve the affected save and consult the publisher’s current support guidance rather than deleting the campaign.
A friend cannot join an online session
- Confirm that everyone is on the same console family and the same Legacy Edition.
- Check that the host’s required subscription is active: PS Plus on PS5, or Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate for Xbox console multiplayer.
- Install the latest update on every console.
- Have the host create the fellowship after all participants are signed in, then send a fresh invite from the game’s online menu.
- Do not treat a missing cross-platform invite as a network fault; cross-play is not confirmed by the official listings.
The local lobby has fewer slots than expected on PS5
That result is consistent with the PlayStation page’s conflicting information. The description advertises split-screen co-op, while the generic player field says “1 – 2 players.” The listing does not establish three-player local support, so use the number of slots the installed game actually presents rather than relying on the online maximum.

Cloud play is unavailable on Xbox
Check that the title is currently marked cloud playable in your regional Xbox Store, that your account has an eligible Game Pass tier, and that you have purchased the game. If any of those conditions is missing, install the purchased copy locally instead.
Best way to plan a session
For a guaranteed couch group, Xbox has the clearer published specification because it explicitly states two-to-three local players. For online groups, both platforms advertise sessions of up to three players, but each has a different subscription requirement. PS5 owners should confirm the local lobby size in their copy because the storefront fields conflict. Xbox owners should decide whether to install the Smart Delivery version or use the listed cloud option, remembering that cloud play still requires ownership and an eligible tier.
Whichever console you use, update before beginning, verify the controls in the Legacy Edition itself, and keep platform expectations separate: the official pages confirm each console’s own co-op modes, but they do not confirm PS5-to-Xbox cross-play.
