For a long video you plan to loop, start with a HandBrake Creator or web preset suited to your intended output, then use Constant Quality unless you need to hit a specific file size or average bitrate. Test a representative section before encoding the whole video; there is no single RF value that preserves every source equally.
HandBrake compresses the saved video file. It does not set the bitrate or keyframes for the separate encoder that sends a live stream to YouTube. Configure that live encoder to YouTube’s ingest requirements after preparing the file.
Choose HandBrake settings for the source you have
Start with a web or Creator preset
Open the source in HandBrake and choose a Creator or web preset intended for hosting services such as YouTube. Fast 1080p30 is a broadly compatible starting point, not a rule to convert every source to 1080p30. Check the preset’s resulting resolution, frame rate, encoder, and quality settings against your source and intended use. HandBrake’s presets are documented at Official presets.
Use Constant Quality for a quality-first encode
On the Video tab, choose Constant Quality when you want HandBrake to vary bitrate according to the content to meet a quality setting. The resulting file size depends on the source and the chosen quality level, so a particular RF value cannot guarantee a target size. HandBrake recommends this mode unless a target file size is necessary; see HandBrake’s preset and quality documentation and Constant Quality vs Average Bit Rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose Average Bitrate instead when an average data rate or file-size target matters more than letting quality determine the bitrate. HandBrake recommends multipass encoding for this mode; it can take up to twice as long. A target average still does not promise identical visual quality across different source material.
Keep the encoder preset at its default initially
The encoder speed preset affects encoding time and the balance of quality and file size. Begin with the default or a neutral setting. A slower preset may be reasonable for an offline encode when you can wait, but it is not a universal improvement for every source or computer. Change it only after comparing a test encode; altering speed may mean you also need to adjust quality or bitrate. HandBrake explains this trade-off in Video encoder presets.

Preserve frame rate unless conversion is intentional
Keep the source frame rate where possible. If you need to convert variable-frame-rate material to constant frame rate, select a constant output rate intentionally rather than changing frame rate as a routine compression step. HandBrake’s frame-rate guidance describes Same as Source/VFR and Constant Frame Rate, but the documentation page is marked draft, so check the labels in your installed version: HandBrake frame rate documentation.
Test before encoding the full runtime
- Pick a representative segment. Include fine detail, fast movement, and any visually difficult scenes in the source.
- Encode with the starting settings. Use the preset, quality mode, frame rate, and encoder preset you intend to use for the full video.
- Inspect both picture and file size. Look for blockiness, lost detail, smearing in motion, or other changes that would be unacceptable in a repeated stream. Compare the output size with your available storage and upload time.
- Adjust one variable at a time. If quality is not acceptable, adjust the quality setting and test again. If the file is too large, consider a lower resolution only if its loss of detail is acceptable.
- Encode the full video only after the test works for your material. The result depends on the particular source; HandBrake’s guidance is to observe the size and quality for your own need.
Lowering resolution can reduce both file size and processing needs, but it removes detail. There is no reliable universal output size or encode time for an unspecified source and computer. HandBrake discusses these effects at HandBrake performance.

Set YouTube live ingest separately
After compression, your live-streaming software or service must send the video to YouTube using live ingest settings. A HandBrake Constant Quality value is not a live bitrate setting. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of 4 seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include:
| Live resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate | H.264 minimum |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 or 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps | 0.4 Mbps |
These are YouTube live-ingest values, not file-encoding targets. YouTube publishes separate bitrate values for AV1 and H.265/HEVC; select recommendations for the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually sent. Make sure your reliable upload capacity can sustain the chosen stream bitrate. See YouTube Help: Encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (checked 2026-10-03).

YouTube’s guidance also specifies H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 ingestion for RTMP/RTMPS, up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; 44.1 kHz for stereo audio; 128 kbps stereo audio; progressive scan; square pixels; and Rec. 709 for SDR. Test the actual stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health rather than assuming a successful file encode guarantees a healthy live stream.

- The output is still too large: Constant Quality does not target a fixed size. Try a short test with a different quality setting, or reduce resolution if the detail loss is acceptable. Use Average Bitrate when an average rate or size target is essential.
- The picture looks soft or motion breaks up: Inspect a representative high-motion or detailed section. Revisit the quality setting and confirm the output resolution and frame rate are appropriate for the source.
- The encode takes longer than expected: Encoding speed varies with the encoder preset, source, and computer. Start from the default and test; a slower preset trades time against compression behavior.
- YouTube reports poor stream health even though the file plays: Check the live encoder, not HandBrake’s file quality setting. Verify CBR, keyframe interval, codec and bitrate for the actual stream resolution and frame rate, along with reliable upload capacity.
- The stream stutters or drops: Check YouTube stream health and whether the connection can sustain the live bitrate. HandBrake’s compression settings alone cannot fix an unstable live connection.
