Best Heroku Alternatives for Self-Hosting Apps in 2026

Dokku is the leanest self-hosted Heroku alternative, Coolify adds a multi-server web UI, and Render is the closest managed option. Compare costs, operational duties, risks and migration steps for 2026.

For most teams, Dokku is the simplest self-hosted Heroku replacement, while Coolify is the better choice when you need a web interface or more than one server. CapRover and Dokploy are free open-source options worth evaluating, but their project activity should be checked before production use. If you do not want to operate servers, Render is the closest managed substitute; Fly.io is attractive for usage-based deployment and region-sensitive workloads.

Every option trades something different: your time versus a provider bill, a flat virtual-machine cost versus metered usage, and a single server versus a multi-server layout. The right decision depends less on the feature checklist than on who will patch the operating system, protect data, renew certificates and recover a failed machine.

What a Heroku alternative has to replace

Heroku packages several jobs into one workflow: source is pushed to a remote Git repository, a build system turns it into a release, configuration is injected as environment variables, and the platform runs the resulting process. Add-ons, logs, TLS, scaling and deployment history complete the experience. A replacement is only equivalent if you account for those operational jobs, not just the ability to run a container.

“Self-hosted” means you run the platform on infrastructure you control, commonly one virtual machine (VM) or several. The software can be free while the VM, block storage, backups and outbound traffic still cost money. You also become responsible for patching the operating system, upgrading Docker or another runtime, configuring TLS, making backups, testing restores and accepting the risk that one failed node can take down every application on it.

Managed services remove most of that infrastructure work. You still own application configuration, data design and incident response, but the provider operates the underlying machines and platform. The bill may be higher or harder to predict, yet the staff time saved can outweigh the difference.

Heroku’s free tier is commonly described as having ended, which is why many developers now search for alternatives. Treat that as the trigger to reassess your operating model rather than assuming that any free replacement will have the same sleep behavior, limits or support.

Comparison at a glance

The prices below are figures reported in comparison coverage, not verified quotations. Providers change prices, regions and included resources, so confirm the current plan page before committing.

Option Operating model Reported price or cost Best fit Main trade-off
Dokku Self-hosted, single host Software free; about $4/month on a DigitalOcean VPS or $3.29/month on Hetzner, according to comparison estimates. A Pro tier was reported at a one-time $849 for one production and two pre-production servers. Developers who want a small, Git-driven platform using Heroku buildpacks. You operate the host, and the design is centered on one server rather than a built-in multi-server control plane.
Coolify Self-hosted, web UI, multi-server Self-hosting reported as free. Coolify Cloud was reported at $5/month for up to two connected servers, plus $3/month for each additional server. Teams that want a visual control panel and the option to connect several servers. More components and choices mean more administration than a minimal single-host setup.
CapRover Self-hosted, open source Free software; infrastructure cost is separate. Users seeking a no-license-cost platform with a familiar application dashboard. Comparison coverage flags significantly slower commit activity than Coolify and Dokploy; assess maintenance before production.
Dokploy Self-hosted, open source Free software; infrastructure cost is separate. Teams comparing newer open-source PaaS dashboards. Evaluate release cadence, documentation and recovery procedures yourself; exact current pricing was not stated.
Render Managed PaaS Web services reported from $7/month on Starter and $25/month on Standard. Paid team plans were reported from $19 per user/month, with usage-based compute. A free tier exists, with services sleeping after inactivity. Teams wanting the closest managed Heroku-style workflow. You exchange server maintenance for provider pricing, plan limits and possible sleep on the free tier.
Fly.io Managed, usage-based Billed per second. Managed Postgres was reported from $38/month for Basic (1 GB RAM) to $282/month for Launch (8 GB). Entry pricing appeared as $1.94 in one comparison and $2.02 in another. Applications that benefit from metered billing or placement nearer to users. It is not self-hostable, and usage-based bills require monitoring.

Self-hosted options

Dokku: the leanest Heroku-like workflow

Dokku is a lightweight, single-host PaaS built around Heroku buildpacks. That makes it the most direct conceptual replacement when your application already expects a buildpack-based build and a Git push deployment. The software itself is free; the practical minimum is the cost of a suitable VM and any storage or backup service you add.

Comparison estimates put the VM-only total at about $4 per month on DigitalOcean or $3.29 per month on Hetzner. Those are infrastructure snapshots, not a universal price: a larger instance, a different region, attached storage, snapshots or higher transfer can change the total. A reported Dokku Pro purchase costs $849 once and covers one production server plus two pre-production servers. Confirm what support, updates and server limits are included before treating that figure as a business case.

  • PRE-MOISTENED WIPES: each wipe instantly removes dust, dirt, and stubborn smudges and fingerprints leaving a streak-free shine
  • ANTI-STATIC: great for cleaning and wiping down your gaming gear and electronics leaving behind no visible residue
  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

The simplicity is also the boundary. Dokku’s normal shape is one host, so a machine failure can affect every app, database and queue placed there. You must design backups and a rebuild process rather than assuming that a second node is available automatically.

Coolify: the best fit for a visual, multi-server setup

Coolify is described as the most feature-rich self-hosted choice in comparison coverage. It provides a web interface and supports multi-server setups, a distinction from Dokku. Self-hosting is reported as free. A hosted Coolify Cloud offer was reported at $5 per month for up to two connected servers, then $3 per month for each additional server.

Choose Coolify when your team wants a dashboard for projects, services and deployments, or when separating workloads across servers matters. Before production, decide which machine will run the control plane, where databases and persistent volumes live, how a server is replaced and how access to the dashboard is protected. A richer interface does not remove the need to understand the underlying containers, networks and disks.

CapRover: free software with a maintenance question

CapRover is free and open source. It can be a sensible option for a small team that wants a platform interface without a software license. The important caveat is project health: comparison coverage says its commit frequency has slowed significantly relative to Coolify and Dokploy.

Slower commits do not prove that a project is unsafe, but they increase the importance of checking recent releases, open issue response, supported runtime versions and the ease of exporting application configuration. If you cannot rebuild the platform on a clean VM or recover an app without undocumented manual steps, the apparent savings may become operational debt.

Dokploy: another open-source dashboard to evaluate

Dokploy appears in comparisons with Dokku, Coolify and CapRover as a free, open-source alternative. The available figures do not establish a current paid tier or a definitive capacity limit. Treat it as a candidate for a hands-on evaluation rather than a guaranteed drop-in replacement.

Test the complete path: connect a repository, build an application, attach a database, persist files, rotate a secret, restore a backup and move the workload to a replacement VM. Those exercises reveal more than a feature list, especially for a project whose release cadence and documentation may change.

Managed alternatives

Render: the closest managed replacement

Render is usually characterized as the closest managed Heroku replacement because it combines source-based deploys, managed services and a conventional application workflow without requiring you to patch a VM. Reported web-service pricing starts at $7 per month on Starter and $25 per month on Standard. Paid team plans were reported from $19 per user per month, while compute is usage-based.

A free tier is available, but services sleep after inactivity. That can be acceptable for a hobby project, preview environment or infrequently used endpoint; it is a poor fit for a latency-sensitive production API unless you select a non-sleeping plan. Check memory, CPU, build-minute, bandwidth, database and team-member limits in the current plan documentation. A low entry price is not the same as a fixed monthly ceiling.

Fly.io: metered deployment and geographic flexibility

Fly.io bills by the second and is presented as a managed, not self-hostable, service. That model can work well when you need to place application instances near users or want capacity to follow actual runtime rather than a fixed VM subscription.

Comparison figures list managed Postgres from $38 per month for a Basic plan with 1 GB of RAM to $282 per month for a Launch plan with 8 GB. Entry pricing conflicts across sources: one reports $1.94 and another $2.02. Because those figures may reflect different dates, regions or resource assumptions, use them only as signals and confirm the current calculator before estimating a bill.

Per-second billing makes short-lived and variable workloads attractive, but it also makes observability essential. Set alerts, understand how disks and databases are charged, and model the cost of running continuously rather than extrapolating from a brief test.

What self-hosting really costs

A comparison estimates $6–$24 per month for the VM bill of a self-hosted open-source PaaS on one VM. That range is directional: it excludes the value of your time and may not include snapshots, off-site backups, object storage, transfer, monitoring or a second recovery machine.

Reported scenario Estimated monthly total How to interpret it
Heroku, 2.5 GB web workload plus Redis About $530 One vendor comparison’s estimate, not a universal quote.
Render, same comparison workload About $185 Usage and plan assumptions were set by that comparison.
Fly.io, same comparison workload About $357 Metered-resource assumptions from one comparison.
Cloud 66 on Hetzner, same comparison workload About $52 Directional estimate from one vendor comparison; it is not a general self-hosting price.

The low VM number can therefore be misleading. Add the labor of applying security updates, upgrading Docker, renewing TLS, monitoring disk pressure, testing restores and responding to a failed node. If an outage costs more than the monthly platform bill, a managed service or a second host may be economically rational even when the software license is free.

How to choose

Choose Dokku when simplicity wins

  • Your team is comfortable with SSH, Git and a single Linux host.
  • Your applications already build cleanly with Heroku-style buildpacks.
  • You can tolerate single-node risk or have an independently tested recovery plan.
  • You prefer a flat VM bill over a dashboard with more moving parts.

Choose Coolify when topology and visibility matter

  • You want a web UI for deployments and service management.
  • You expect to connect multiple servers or separate production, staging and data workloads.
  • You are prepared to secure an administrative control plane and document its recovery.

Evaluate CapRover or Dokploy when license cost is the priority

  • You need free, open-source software and can perform your own maintenance review.
  • You will verify release activity, issue handling, supported runtimes and backup portability.
  • You can run a proof of concept before moving irreplaceable production data.

Choose Render when you want managed operations

  • No one on the team should own VM patching, Docker upgrades or certificate operations.
  • You want a familiar source-to-deploy workflow and can accept provider pricing.
  • Your service can tolerate sleeping on the free tier, or you budget for a continuously available plan.

Choose Fly.io when placement or metering is decisive

  • Latency or regional placement is more important than a single fixed monthly bill.
  • You can instrument usage and set spending alerts.
  • You do not require a self-hosted installation.

A migration plan that works for any option

  1. Inventory the current Heroku application. Record buildpacks, runtime version, process types, release tasks, environment variables, add-ons, scheduled jobs, outbound integrations, persistent files and data stores. Separate disposable assets from data that must survive a redeploy.
  2. Classify each dependency. Decide whether the target platform will provide the database, Redis, object storage, cron service and log aggregation, or whether you will operate each separately. Do not assume that an application container’s filesystem is durable.
  3. Pick the failure boundary. For self-hosting, decide whether one VM is acceptable. Document what happens if it is unavailable, and price a second host or a rebuild-and-restore procedure if the answer is no.
  4. Build a staging deployment. Use a non-production application to verify the build, start command, health check, background worker, migrations and secret injection. Test both a normal release and a failed release.
  5. Move data before traffic. Take a consistent database backup, restore it into the target, compare row counts or application checks, and rehearse the final incremental transfer. Keep the original system available until the new copy is proven.
  6. Recreate configuration safely. Import secrets through the platform’s secret mechanism rather than committing them to Git. Rotate credentials that were copied during migration, and record which services need a restart after a change.
  7. Configure DNS and TLS. Lower DNS time-to-live ahead of the cutover, issue certificates on the target, and verify redirects, WebSocket connections and any custom domains. Confirm renewal before switching production traffic.
  8. Run a controlled cutover. Pause writes if necessary, perform the final data sync, switch DNS or the proxy, and watch error rate, latency, queue depth and database connections. Keep a documented rollback condition and deadline.
  9. Prove recovery after launch. Perform a restore test, rebuild a disposable VM, and confirm that application definitions, secrets, database backups and DNS instructions are sufficient for another operator to recover the service.

Operational safeguards for a self-hosted PaaS

  • Patch schedule: Assign ownership for operating-system security updates, platform updates and Docker upgrades. Test upgrades in staging before production.
  • Backups: Store copies outside the primary VM and define retention. A backup that has never been restored is an assumption, not a recovery plan.
  • TLS and access: Protect SSH and the platform dashboard with least-privilege accounts, key-based access and multi-factor authentication where available. Monitor certificate expiry.
  • Capacity: Watch memory, CPU, disk space, inode usage and database connections. Build failures and restarts often indicate resource exhaustion rather than application code defects.
  • Logs and alerts: Retain enough logs to diagnose a failed deploy, but cap storage growth. Alert on unavailable services, failed backups, full disks and unusual spending.
  • Single-node risk: If production, staging, databases and queues share one VM, document the blast radius and recovery time you accept.
  • Project health: Recheck release activity and supported dependencies before every major upgrade, particularly for open-source platforms whose commit cadence varies.

Common failure modes and fixes

The build succeeds locally but fails on the platform

Compare the runtime and buildpack assumptions, lock dependency versions, and inspect the platform build log for missing system packages or environment variables. Reproduce the build in staging before changing production.

A redeploy erased uploaded files

Container filesystems are not a substitute for durable storage. Move uploads to object storage or a separately managed volume, then test that a new instance can read them.

The VM ran out of memory

Check application workers, build processes, databases and Redis together; the smallest VM estimate may not support all of them concurrently. Reduce concurrency, move stateful services or resize the host, and add disk and memory alerts.

A certificate or domain failed at cutover

Verify DNS records, proxy routing, certificate issuance and renewal on the target before changing the public record. Keep the old endpoint available until HTTPS and non-HTTP protocols have been tested.

The monthly bill is higher than the advertised entry price

Separate fixed plan charges from compute, storage, bandwidth, seats, databases and backups. For usage-based services, measure a full billing cycle and set alerts before inviting more traffic.

Bottom line

Start with Dokku for a small, single-server deployment that should feel closest to Heroku. Select Coolify when a dashboard and multi-server layout justify additional complexity. Consider CapRover or Dokploy only after checking their current maintenance health. If server operations are not part of your team’s job, Render is the most straightforward managed path; choose Fly.io when metered deployment and geographic placement are worth the extra billing analysis. In every case, price recovery, backups and operator time—not just the advertised platform fee.
