To set up an Auto Turret in Rust, craft or obtain the unit, place it so its forward 180-degree scan covers the approach you want to defend, connect at least 10 rW to Power In, install a projectile weapon with matching ammunition, and add every intended user to that turret’s own authorization list. Then power it on and test the sightline, range, friendly access and nearby-turret limit before relying on it.

What an Auto Turret does
Facepunch describes the Auto Turret as an automated electric sentry that engages and neutralizes moving targets it can see. It is not a proximity mine: the unit must have power, a weapon, ammunition, a valid target and an unobstructed view inside its firing area. Your layout therefore matters as much as the item itself.

Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe turret’s scan is a forward 180-degree arc determined at placement. It faces the player when placed, so the side of your character that is looking toward the intended approach becomes the turret’s outward-facing side. Its maximum shooting range is 30 metres according to the RustClash technical reference, and changing to a different gun does not extend that turret range.

Plan the position before you place it
Choose the side that faces the threat
Stand where you want the turret to be and face outward toward the lane, doorway, roof edge or courtyard you need to cover. Place the unit while looking from the protected side toward that approach. Because the 180-degree arc is fixed by that placement orientation, turning the turret after the fact is not a substitute for choosing the correct side initially.
Keep the muzzle and view clear
Inspect the entire intended lane from the turret’s position. Walls, roof pieces, building parts and decorative props can interrupt the view or block the muzzle. A turret can have power and ammunition yet fail to engage if the target is hidden behind one of these obstructions. Use openings and corners that expose only the necessary firing arc rather than leaving the whole unit in the open.

Keep important parts of the approach inside the turret’s 30 m maximum shooting range. A weapon with greater theoretical reach does not increase the turret’s own limit. Measure the distance to the point where an attacker is likely to appear, not merely to the nearest wall or door.
Account for raider exposure
Attackers should not receive a long, safe angle from which to destroy the unit. Put vulnerable sides behind cover, use more than one deliberate angle where your base design allows it, and avoid placing every turret where the same external position can reach them. Overlapping fields of fire are useful only when each overlap still has a clear line of sight and does not create an easy target cluster.

Wire the electrical circuit
Connect Power In
Run an electrical circuit into the turret’s Power In. The official operating requirement is 10 rW per functioning turret. If the circuit cannot provide that requirement, the unit will not boot even if its weapon and ammunition are installed.
Budget for every load
Calculate the demand of all turrets and other devices sharing the source. One turret needs 10 rW; several units require a source and battery arrangement sized for their combined demand. Leave enough capacity for the rest of the circuit instead of treating the turret’s number as the total base requirement.

Use the first boot as a wiring test
After connecting the wire, observe whether the turret powers up. A non-booting unit narrows the initial check to the power circuit and the weapon installation: confirm that Power In is receiving at least 10 rW and that a weapon is present in the weapon slot. Do not spend ammunition troubleshooting a unit that has not booted.
Install a weapon and ammunition
Choose a compatible projectile weapon
Open the turret’s loot panel and place a compatible projectile weapon in the weapon slot. Facepunch’s Modular Turrets announcement says Auto Turrets accept almost any projectile weapon, from an Eoka to an M249, when the associated ammunition is supplied. The practical choice is therefore tied to the ammunition you can maintain and the role of that firing position, not to a special turret-only gun.

Load the matching ammunition
Put the ammunition used by that weapon into the turret’s ammunition area. A turret that tracks a target but does not fire commonly has no matching ammunition loaded. Check that the ammo type corresponds to the weapon actually installed, especially after swapping guns.
Refill safely
The technical reference advises turning the turret off before refilling or changing the weapon. Make that part of your maintenance routine: disable the unit, open the loot panel, replace or refill the weapon and ammunition, then restore power and test the lane from a safe position.
Authorize yourself and your teammates
Open the turret’s own authorization list and add every player who should be treated as friendly. Add yourself first, then each teammate who may pass through the defended area or service the unit. Authorization is attached to the turret; authorization on a Tool Cupboard does not automatically substitute for the turret’s list according to the technical reference.
Test access while the turret is safe and powered down as appropriate. Have an authorized player approach through the route they will actually use, and verify that an unauthorized test target is not mistaken for a friendly. When you replace a turret, repeat the authorization process for the new unit rather than assuming the old list follows it.

Power on and verify the firing arc
- Confirm orientation. Stand outside the defended lane and check that the forward half-circle points toward the approach, not toward your own door, roof route or work area.
- Check visibility. Look for building pieces, props or terrain that interrupt the muzzle or sightline.
- Confirm power. Verify that the circuit delivers the required 10 rW to Power In and that the turret boots.
- Confirm the loadout. Ensure a projectile weapon and its matching ammunition are installed.
- Check authorization. Make sure every friendly user appears on this turret’s list and that Tool Cupboard status has not been treated as a replacement.
- Test the approach. From a safe, controlled position, check that the unit can acquire an intended target inside 30 m without pointing at a friendly route.
Only after these checks should you leave the turret active while the base is unattended.
Understand Turret Interference
Facepunch introduced Turret Interference in the 5 October 2023 “Solid foundations” update. There is no hard limit on the number of turrets you can deploy; the restriction concerns how many can be activated at one time within a 40 m radius.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When the local active limit is exceeded, a subsequently activated turret emits a blue electrical glow and fails to acquire targets. This is different from a dead power circuit: the unit may be placed and powered, yet remain unable to lock on because too many nearby turrets are active. Disabled turrets can still be remotely controlled from a Computer Station, so you can use that capability to choose which defensive positions are active.
Design around the 40-metre radius
- Map which turrets sit within 40 m of one another before wiring all of them for simultaneous operation.
- Choose the positions that cover the most important approaches when the local active limit forces a choice.
- Use separate defensive zones or a deliberate activation plan rather than assuming every deployed turret can fire at once.
- Treat a blue glow followed by no target acquisition as an interference check before replacing guns or rewiring the base.
Remote control and signal outputs
Computer Station control
A Computer Station can control a turret after you configure its Listening ID. The technical reference says Listening IDs are case-sensitive. Use a unique ID, record the exact capitalization for your team, and enter it consistently when adding the turret to the station. If remote control fails, recheck every character and confirm that the turret is connected to power or otherwise in a state that permits the intended remote action.

Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
Use the three outputs
The turret exposes outputs named Has Target, Low Ammo and No Ammo. You can feed those signals into alarms, door controllers or other electrical logic. For example, a Low Ammo signal can warn you to service a position before it becomes empty, while Has Target can drive a status indicator. The outputs do not remove the need for a clear line of sight, valid range or authorization; they report turret states for the rest of your circuit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Build decisions: a practical comparison framework
When deciding between two placements or circuits, compare them on the same criteria rather than judging a turret by weapon name alone.
| Decision axis | What to verify | Why it changes the build |
|---|---|---|
| Approach coverage | Forward 180-degree arc and clear line of sight | A well-powered turret is ineffective if the threatened lane sits outside its arc or behind cover. |
| Effective distance | Target appears within 30 m | Weapon choice cannot extend the turret’s stated maximum range. |
| Power budget | At least 10 rW per active turret, plus other circuit loads | The source and battery must support the combined demand. |
| Ammunition plan | Weapon-specific matching ammunition | The turret may track without firing when the correct ammo is absent. |
| Authorization workflow | Each intended user is listed on that turret | Tool Cupboard authorization alone does not replace turret authorization. |
| Raider exposure | Cover for the unit and no easy external firing angle | Placement determines how safely attackers can disable it. |
| Interference risk | Other active turrets inside 40 m | Exceeding the local active limit produces a blue-glowing turret that cannot acquire targets. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
The turret does not boot
- Inspect the wire at Power In and verify that the circuit supplies at least 10 rW.
- Open the loot panel and confirm that a weapon is installed.
- After correcting either issue, power-cycle or reactivate the unit and observe whether it boots before investigating targeting.
It tracks a target but does not shoot
- Check that matching ammunition for the installed weapon is loaded.
- Confirm that the target is unauthorized, visible and inside the turret’s range.
- Look for a wall, roof piece, prop or other obstruction interrupting the firing path.
The turret glows blue and acquires nothing
Inspect other active turrets within 40 m. The symptom matches Turret Interference when the local active limit has been exceeded. Deactivate or remotely manage nearby units according to the coverage priority you planned.
Friends are being targeted
Add those players to the individual turret’s authorization list. Do not rely on their Tool Cupboard authorization as a substitute, and retest the exact route they use through the base.
The defended lane is poorly covered
Re-evaluate the placement orientation first. The intended lane must fall inside the forward 180-degree arc, then remain visible and within 30 m. If it does not, rotate the placement to a better outward-facing position and remove line-of-sight obstructions.
Computer Station control fails
Verify the Listening ID character by character, including capitalization. Then confirm that the turret is powered or otherwise in a state that permits the remote action. A correctly entered ID cannot make an interference-disabled turret acquire targets.
