There is no single, independently verified list of the “best” horror games on itch.io. The platform’s catalogue spans browser-playable visual novels, short scares, psychological horror, survival games, and more. Rather than treat a changing rating order as a definitive ranking, use itch.io’s ratings and tags to discover candidates, then check each game’s page for its format, price, system support, and features.
What “horror” means on itch.io
Itch.io describes its Horror tag as “Featuring tense atmospheres, unsettling themes, and often supernatural elements designed to frighten or disturb players.” The platform adds that games “may include jump scares, psychological terror, or survival elements set in eerie environments.” That broad definition covers very different kinds of play, so the right choice depends on what you find frightening and how you want to play.

Its browse pages include subgenres and formats ranging from adventure, puzzle, role-playing, shooter, simulation, survival, and visual novel to browser-playable games and downloadable releases. Examples in listing copy illustrate that range: Remember is presented as a browser-playable visual novel, Express No.6 as New Year’s horror on a train, Parasomnia: No REM as first-person psychological horror, The Plant Shop (Demo) as a cozy horror simulation, and A Doll’s Locket – Remake as a Victorian horror puzzle game. These are creator or platform descriptions, not independent evaluations. Browse itch.io’s Horror tag.
How to choose a horror game on itch.io
Start with the kind of horror you want
- Jump scares or supernatural horror: Look for games that emphasize sudden threats, eerie settings, or paranormal themes.
- Psychological horror: Search for stories and atmospheres built around unease, uncertainty, or disturbing themes rather than action alone.
- Survival horror: Check whether the listing describes resource management, evasion, or combat; the tag alone does not tell you how those systems work.
- A specific aesthetic: Listing language can help surface styles such as “90s VHS Found Footage Cryptid Horror,” “Short Japanese VHS Horror,” or “A short PS1-indie style horror experience.” Treat those phrases as descriptions, not guarantees of quality or length.
Check how you can play it
Some games run in a browser; others require a download. A browser-playable listing can be convenient for a short session, but check the individual page for its controls and any requirements. For downloadable games, verify the listed operating systems—itch.io’s broad browse page includes Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS, but that does not mean every game supports all of them.

- Amazon Exclusive - 2 sided poster included in every game!
- Grace Ashcroft, an FBI intelligence analyst who is introverted and easily scared, representing a new type of character for the Resident Evil series. Grace will experience horror from the same perspective as the player as she learns to overcome her fears throughout the course of the story.
- For the first time ever in Resident Evil history, players will be able to freely switch between both first- and third-person perspectives throughout the game.
- An Anniversary to Remember: With March 2026 marking the Resident Evil series’ 30-year anniversary, Resident Evil Requiem marks its own milestone in the franchise.
- Pre-orders for Resident Evil Requiem are now open, with the bonus of Grace’s costume: Apocalypse. Please note that the picture weapon does not come with the costume, but it can be obtained in-game.
Confirm price, length, and accessibility on the game page
Free, paid, and discounted titles coexist, and prices or promotions can change. Check the title’s page close to the time you plan to play. Itch.io also offers browse filters for inputs such as keyboard, mouse, and gamepad; session estimates; and accessibility features including subtitles, configurable controls, high contrast, color-blind-friendly options, blind-friendly options, textless play, and interactive tutorials. A filter category is not proof that a particular game has that feature, so confirm it on the individual listing.
Using ratings and lists without mistaking them for a verdict
Itch.io’s Horror and Indie browse page showed 10,189 games in a crawl accessed October 4, 2026. That is a point-in-time catalogue count, not a permanent total. In 2026 search snapshots, top-rated pages showed 31 downloadable indie-horror games, 34 Horror and indie-horror games, and 33 free indie-horror games. These counts use different filters and should not be compared as though they describe the same list.

- A dark, enthralling 4-5 hour narrative to keep you hooked and guessing until the end. Gorgeous visuals as you traverse numerous and diverse environments, presented with a cinematic, film-like aesthetic. Ranged and melee combat with upgradeable weapons to help you survive your nightmarish journey.
- A stellar voice cast, starring Valerie Rose Lohman (What Remains of Edith Finch, Wolfenstein: Youngblood), Jonah Scott (Dying Light 2: Stay Human, Date Everything), and Aleks Le (Persona 3: Reload, Marvel Rivals, Ghost of Yotei).
- A beautifully dynamic and haunting soundtrack composed and performed by Jacob Noska, and Jonah Henthorne: members of the band Auric Echoes.
- The puzzles you encounter are more than your standard key hunt. Project Songbird rewards those with an eye for detail, making each puzzle a challenge of creativity and wits.
- The combat of Project Songbird offers a variety of approaches inspired by the classics of the survival horror genre. Melee and gunplay is slow and weighty, and ammo is incredibly scarce. However, combat isn't your only option, as you have a multitude of tools at your disposal to aid in sneaking past any creatures that wish to do you harm.
Search snapshots also displayed ratings of 5.0/5 across 78 ratings for Adventures of Julia, 4.7/5 across 26 ratings for The Mudmyth Sound (Steamboat Willie), and 4.9/5 across 283 ratings for The Voidness. These are mutable user-rating displays, not editorial scores or evidence of personal play-testing. Other names surfaced in top-rated lists include Leenie Boog, Murder Castle, TRAPT, EASTER NIGHT, Forgotten School, and Lily’s Memories. Use these names as starting points for discovery, then assess each game’s current listing yourself. A user-curated collection titled “best indie horror games,” updated April 20, 2026, included What Lies Beyond, DeepInside, The Plant Shop (Demo), Unusual Tales: Deep Below, and Checkpoint 57. Like any collection, it can help you find titles, but it is not an authoritative ranking. Browse itch.io collections.
