Is Pebbles the best early-game horse?
Pebbles is a practical early choice if you want to get a mount without immediately paying for a different one and plan to build toward her perk. Groom Ballatay at Semine may return Pebbles for free after a successful dialogue check; otherwise, she can be purchased. The cited guide gives no stable price, noting that dialogue and reputation can affect it.
Good Old Pebbles is reported to unlock after about 35 km ridden on Pebbles. Fast travel reportedly does not count toward this threshold, so normal riding is the predictable way to progress it. The guide’s recommendation is to keep Pebbles until the perk becomes available if you value her carrying capacity and earlier perk path.

Should you replace Pebbles with Herring?
Herring is a story reward during Back in the Saddle, so accepting him can be an appealing way to get a different mount without buying one. Reports about recovering Herring after declining the offer are inconsistent, so do not count on being able to reclaim him later.

Pisek Lad is sold by Groom Hanniker at Kuttenberg’s horse market. He is the straightforward option if you want a paid all-rounder with strong base stats right away. That does not make him a universal upgrade: Pebbles or Herring with their relevant perks may better suit a player prioritizing carrying capacity or courage. Compare the values shown in your inventory under equivalent equipment and perk conditions before spending money on a replacement.
How to choose between horses
- Keep Pebbles if you want an early mount and value the reported Good Old Pebbles progression and carrying capacity.
- Take Herring if you want the story reward and prefer his reported courage tradeoff.
- Buy Pisek Lad if you want a strong paid all-rounder now rather than waiting for a perk.
- Look at Meadow or Erdel if carrying capacity is your priority, with Erdel also presented as a courage-focused choice.
- Consider Kasztanka if you want the combat-oriented courage and speed profile described by the secondary guide.
When stats matter, compare the same attributes with the same tack and perks. A screenshot or raw base-speed figure alone is not a reliable way to decide which horse is better for your playthrough.
