For the best classic-style adventure recognized in 2018, add Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age—but note that it first released in Japan before 2018. Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is the contrasting choice for a more modern fantasy presentation. This is a curated selection, not a definitive ranking of every JRPG released worldwide in 2018.
How to read “of 2018”
Release-year labels can mean a game’s first release anywhere or its arrival in a particular region. This list uses both ideas explicitly: Octopath Traveler is the strict 2018 release here, while Dragon Quest XI is included as a 2018 award-year and Western-release recommendation, not as a game whose worldwide debut was in 2018. The Japan Game Awards 2018 record establishes its recognition that year, not a global release-date rule.
The best JRPG picks from 2018
Octopath Traveler — best fit for a strict 2018 release
Square Enix’s corporate archive records Octopath Traveler launching for Nintendo Switch in Japan on July 13, 2018. Its old-school JRPG sensibility makes it a natural starting point for this list, and its recognition includes a Famitsu Award 2018 Excellence Award, Best Game Music Award and Rookie Award, as well as IGN Japan GOTY 2018 Best Visuals. It was also nominated for Best Role Playing Game, Best Art Direction and Best Score/Music at The Game Awards 2018. Square Enix announced in 2018 that shipments and digital sales exceeded one million. That figure combines shipments and digital sales; it is not a region-by-region consumer sell-through total.
#1 Best Overall
Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age — best classic-style award-year pick
Dragon Quest XI is the recommendation for a more traditional adventure with a modern presentation. CESA’s Japan Game Awards 2018 lists it for both an Award for Excellence and a Best Sales Award, praising its mix of nostalgia and newness and noting the PS4 version’s HD visuals and 2D pixel mode. CESA also reports that it sold over 3 million copies in Japan in its first week; that is a Japan-specific, first-week figure, not a global total. CESA’s Japan Game Awards 2018 entry.
The original Japanese release predates 2018, although the game became a major Western release in 2018. RPGamer selected it as its 2018 Game of the Year and described its campaign as an eighty-hour journey; that is an editorial description, not a guaranteed playtime for every player. RPGamer’s 2018 Game of the Year selection. Game designer Yuji Horii said: “Life is role-playing. We hope that you will continue to support Dragon Quest.”
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom — best modern-fantasy contrast
For a different flavor from the old-school roots of Octopath Traveler and Dragon Quest XI, consider Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom. GameSpot’s 2018 RPG roundup characterizes it as a “quasi-Ghibli affair,” contrasting its more modern fantasy style with the other games’ classic JRPG traditions. That phrase is GameSpot’s editorial description, not an official genre label. GameSpot’s 2018 RPG roundup.
