There is no official ranking of the best Life Is Strange characters, so this list is an editorial judgment—not a measure of fan consensus. It weighs character development, narrative agency, relationships, thematic impact, and how meaningfully player choices shape a character. The ranking covers the series, including its major protagonists and supporting characters. It is spoiler-light: it discusses the original game’s central mystery, but avoids later plot outcomes.
1. Chloe Price
Chloe is the series’ most compelling character because her sharp humor and defiance sit alongside grief, abandonment, and a deep need for connection. In the original Life Is Strange, she is Max’s closest friend and a driving force in the search for Rachel Amber. Before the Storm puts Chloe at the center of her own story, giving more room to see the circumstances beneath her bravado.

Her relationship with Max is especially effective because it is not simply a reunion between old friends: years apart have left them with different memories and expectations. Chloe can be abrasive, but that friction makes her vulnerabilities—and the player’s choices about how to respond to her—matter. Square Enix describes her as struggling after her father’s death and Max’s departure; a 2017 GDC narrative review identifies her as Max’s primary foil. Square Enix’s original-game character profiles and the GDC narrative review offer useful context.
2. Max Caulfield
Max is both the player’s point of view and a character whose portrayal can shift with the player’s decisions. An introverted photography student who returns to her hometown after five years away, she gains the ability to rewind time. That power makes her a natural fit for a choice-driven story: the player can reconsider actions, but the story still asks what it means to live with decisions and their consequences.
#1 Best Overall
- The box set comprises a disc with LIFE IS STRANGE: TRUE COLORS and LIFE IS STRANGE: DOUBLE EXPOSURE, alongside a redemption code granting entitlement to LIFE IS STRANGE REMASTERED, LIFE IS STRANGE: BEFORE THE STORM REMASTERED, LIFE IS STRANGE 2, and all associated DLC and pre-order incentive items.
- Supernatural powers collide with everyday life, and every choice you make has consequences.
- LIFE IS STRANGE is a single-player narrative adventure series that focuses on heartfelt, grounded stories with a twist of the strange, and a franchise that has won over 100 awards since its inception - including from The Peabody Awards, BAFTA, and GLAAD.
- Over five cinematic, emotional adventures, you’ll Rewind Time as Max Caulfield and uncover the secrets of Arcadia Bay with Chloe Price, take a road trip with Sean Diaz and his telekinetic brother Daniel, find a new home with psychic empath Alex Chen, and return to Max to solve a murder across two timelines.
Max’s relationship with Chloe gives the original game its emotional center, while her perspective also frames the investigation into Rachel’s disappearance. The GDC review specifically discusses how player choices help define Max, which gives her an unusual degree of interpretive openness among the series’ leads. Square Enix’s character profile and PlayStation’s game synopsis introduce her story and power.
3. Alex Chen
True Colors centers on Alex as she searches for a new home and tries to understand the people around her. Her psychic empathy gives the story a distinctive way to explore how other people’s emotions affect her, making relationships central to both the character and the game’s conflicts. That premise creates a strong thematic role: empathy can help Alex connect with others, but it also complicates what she experiences as her own.
Alex’s appeal comes from that tension and from her position as the lead of a story built around community and belonging. Square Enix’s Life Is Strange collection page describes True Colors as Alex’s search for a new home and identifies her as a psychic empath.
4. Rachel Amber
Rachel is a memorable character partly because the original Life Is Strange introduces her through her absence. She is Chloe’s friend and a Blackwell student whose disappearance becomes the mystery Max and Chloe investigate. In that game, Rachel is seen largely through what other characters say and remember, so the audience must weigh competing impressions rather than rely on a single account.

Before the Storm gives Rachel a more active role. Square Enix describes her as popular, intelligent, active, and artistically gifted, while also noting personal troubles and instability. The contrast between the reputation surrounding Rachel and the person shown in her own story makes her one of the series’ richest studies of projection, friendship, and uncertainty. See Square Enix’s original-game profiles, the Before the Storm profiles, and the PlayStation synopsis.
5. Sean Diaz
Life Is Strange 2 follows brothers Sean and Daniel Diaz on a road trip. Sean’s place in the story is inseparable from his relationship with Daniel: he is not only a protagonist with his own fears and goals, but also a brother whose choices affect someone he loves. That bond gives the game’s changing circumstances an intimate human scale.
Sean earns this spot for the way the series uses a family relationship to shape its central drama. The official collection overview identifies Sean and Daniel as the leads of the second game and describes their story as a road trip.
6. Daniel Diaz
Daniel is not simply a companion to Sean. The brothers’ relationship is the heart of Life Is Strange 2, and Daniel’s own perspective and telekinetic ability make him an active part of the story. His age and bond with Sean give their choices particular weight: the brothers have to navigate events together, but they do not experience them in the same way.
Rank #3
- Includes all seasons
- includes bonus game: the awesome adventures of Captain spirit
- includes arcadia Bay patches to customise sean's in-game backpack
Daniel’s inclusion reflects the series’ strength at building stories around relationships rather than powers alone. Square Enix’s collection page describes Daniel as telekinetic.
7. Safi Fayyad
Safi is Max’s closest new friend in Life Is Strange: Double Exposure, and her identity as an aspirational poet gives her a creative ambition of her own. She matters as more than a connection to Max: she is a distinct presence in Max’s new story and a friend whose relationship with the returning protagonist helps anchor the game.
Because Double Exposure introduces Safi within Max’s later life, her role also gives the series a way to explore how Max’s relationships change beyond the original Arcadia Bay story. Square Enix Asia’s character introduction describes Safi as Max’s closest new friend and an aspirational poet.

Moses is an astrophysicist who is interested in systems and rules, a fittingly specific outlook for a character in a series built around unusual abilities and difficult choices. His introduction adds a different kind of intellectual presence to Double Exposure and gives Max’s new circle a character whose curiosity is grounded in science.

Square Enix Asia’s official introduction identifies Moses as an astrophysicist interested in systems and rules.
9. Joyce Price
Joyce matters because Chloe’s story is also a family story. As Chloe’s mother, she is part of the home life that helps explain the pressures surrounding Chloe without reducing her to a single cause. Her presence gives the relationship between Chloe and her family context beyond the friendship at the center of the series.
Square Enix includes Joyce among the characters profiled for Before the Storm, alongside Chloe, Rachel, and others in their school and family environment. See the official character profiles.
10. Nathan Prescott
Nathan is a significant supporting character in the original game because he brings the influence of the Prescott family into Blackwell Academy’s social world. His role helps establish the unequal power dynamics around the school and contributes to the tension surrounding Max and Chloe’s investigation.
Square Enix describes Nathan as a Blackwell student and the son of the influential Prescott family in its original-game character profiles.
Where to meet these characters
The characters span multiple games rather than one continuous cast. Square Enix’s North American store listing describes the Life Is Strange Collection for PS5 as including a disc for True Colors and Double Exposure, plus a redemption code for Life Is Strange Remastered, Before the Storm Remastered, Life Is Strange 2, and associated DLC. The listing identifies the code-based elements as digital-product licenses; it does not put every game on the disc. The collection is one route through several of these stories, not a requirement for understanding the ranking.
