For a continuous prerecorded YouTube playlist, the lightest option depends on what you want to avoid. If you do not want to leave a PC running, use a cloud playout service: StreamNeo is the first option to consider because it loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. If you want to avoid a subscription and can administer a server, a headless FFmpeg setup on a VPS is a possible DIY route. Browser studios such as StreamYard and Restream are primarily for producing live shows, not proof of unattended playlist automation.
What “lightweight” means for a 24/7 playlist
OBS alternatives are not all alternatives for the same job. A continuous playlist stream needs to keep sending prerecorded video to YouTube Live after you stop interacting with the setup. “Lightweight” might mean low CPU use on a local machine, minimal setup, no always-on computer at home, or low total cost. Those are different criteria.
YouTube defines an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists products for different workflows, but says listed products are not made by YouTube; assess their capabilities and terms independently. The directory identifies Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded video streaming and Upstream as a cloud studio for 24/7 live video streaming. Those are vendor descriptions in the directory, not independent tests of uptime or performance: YouTube’s verified encoder directory.
Best options for continuous prerecorded YouTube streaming
| Rank and approach | Best fit | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| #1 StreamNeo — cloud playlist playout | Creators who want an uploaded playlist to keep streaming without leaving their own computer on. | Cloud operation avoids maintaining a home PC for playout; check the service’s storage and plan details against your library and schedule. |
| Cloud playout services such as Gyre and Upstream | Operators looking for a hosted service aimed at continuous video streaming. | Confirm playlist scheduling, recovery behavior, supported formats, plan limits, and current pricing directly with each provider. The directory listing is not a comparative performance assessment. |
| FFmpeg on a VPS or server | Technically confident operators who want a headless, self-managed pipeline. | You must provision and maintain the server, handle monitoring and recovery, and verify the right commands and settings for your files and YouTube destination. Available source detail for this particular route is limited, so do not treat it as a turnkey recipe. |
| Browser production studios such as StreamYard or Restream | Live shows with guests, overlays, or distribution to multiple destinations. | Show-production and multistream features do not establish unattended playlist scheduling or failover. Choose them for the workflow they document, not simply because they replace OBS. |
| AJA HELO Plus hardware | Operators specifically seeking dedicated hardware for scheduled prerecorded playout. | YouTube’s directory describes its PlayToStream feature as scheduling prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. It is a specialized appliance; compare verified total cost and functionality with hosted and server options before buying. |

When a DIY server is a better fit
A VPS running a headless encoder can eliminate dependence on your desktop while giving you control over the operating environment. It does not eliminate the work: you are responsible for setup, keeping the server available, observing the stream, and restoring it if the process or connection fails. FFmpeg is described in a current search result as a direct route for looping prerecorded video from a Linux VPS, but that article could not be fetched for verification. Treat this as a route to investigate, not a tested setup guide; confirm commands and stream settings from reliable current documentation before relying on it.
Before committing to any DIY or hosted configuration, test it with a private or unlisted YouTube stream. Check that playback continues through a full playlist cycle, the stream remains active when your control device is closed, and your intended recovery procedure works. Compare total costs rather than assuming a server or appliance is cheaper: hosting, storage, maintenance time, and any hardware purchase all matter.

YouTube requirements and limits to plan around
- First-time live enablement: YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Do this before a scheduled launch, not at the moment you expect to go live.
- Archive length: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a stream that may run longer, check YouTube’s current behavior and make an independent recording plan rather than assuming the full broadcast will be available as an archive.
- Copyright and reused material: A video being prerecorded or looped does not itself establish that you have permission to stream it or that it complies with YouTube policies. Use material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check the platform’s current rules before scheduling continuous playback.
- Encoder directory listings: YouTube’s directory is a starting point for identifying products, not an endorsement or guarantee. Verify a provider’s current capabilities, limits, and terms directly.
Read YouTube’s live encoder guidance and directory for platform information.
How to choose and validate your setup
- Decide what must stay on. If no personal computer or home connection should be needed, start with a cloud playout service. If you are willing to maintain a server, investigate a VPS-based encoder. If the stream is a guest-led show rather than a loop, consider a production studio.
- Check the playlist workflow. Verify that the service can order and repeat your videos as needed, accepts your file formats, and supports the schedule you plan to run. Do not infer playlist automation from a service’s guest-show or multistream features.
- Check recovery and operating responsibility. Find out what happens if YouTube disconnects, the process stops, or the provider has an interruption. For self-managed systems, specify how you will monitor and restart the encoder.
- Test privately before depending on it. Confirm the intended video and playlist behavior on an unlisted or private stream, and check what viewers see after a disconnect or playlist end.
- Compare the full cost and constraints. Include service or server charges, hardware where relevant, storage, and the time you will spend operating the stream. Confirm current provider pricing and plan limits rather than relying on assumptions.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream at the quality you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Choosing a show studio for an unattended loop: Browser guest production and distribution features do not, by themselves, prove that a service can schedule and continuously repeat prerecorded files.
- Assuming a server is maintenance-free: Headless operation removes the need for a local screen and keyboard, not the responsibility to monitor, maintain, and recover the pipeline.
- Relying on a long YouTube archive: The documented automatic archive behavior applies to streams under 12 hours; longer runs need a separate plan.
- Skipping a real-world test: A setup that works during initial launch may still fail at a playlist boundary or after a disconnect. Test the behavior you need before making it your always-on channel.
