To keep a YouTube meditation stream running while using less power, let the display turn off but prevent the PC from sleeping, choose Windows 11’s Best Power Efficiency mode if OBS remains stable, and use a simple OBS scene with only the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your stream needs. There is no universal low-power preset or published wattage saving for this workload, so test the settings on your own PC before leaving it unattended.
Set Windows to turn off the screen without sleeping
In Windows 11, open Settings → System → Power & battery → Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts. The screen and sleep timers are separate controls: choose when the display turns off, then set the plugged-in sleep timeout so the computer does not sleep while OBS is broadcasting. Microsoft documents the controls in its Windows 11 power settings.
Under Settings → System → Power & battery → Power Mode, select Best Power Efficiency as a starting point. Microsoft says this mode reduces consumption by limiting background activity, but it does not publish a guaranteed saving for an always-on streaming PC. Check OBS and the stream after changing the mode; if encoding becomes unstable, try another power mode.
Reduce OBS workload without removing what the stream needs
A static meditation image with audio generally does not need elaborate motion graphics or a complex scene. OBS notes that sources can use resources even when they are not visible, and that browser sources, complex scenes, and costly filters can add workload. Keep only the sources and effects the broadcast actually uses.

- Remove unused sources and filters, including hidden ones.
- Use a still image if the stream does not need animation.
- Avoid oversized image assets when they appear small in the scene.
- Keep overlays and browser sources only when they serve a clear purpose.
OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide also explains that lowering output resolution and frame rate can reduce rendering and encoding work. The effect on power use varies by computer and workload.
Choose an output profile that fits the content and connection
YouTube does not publish a meditation-specific preset. Pick a resolution and frame rate that suit the visuals, then balance the bitrate against both YouTube’s guidance and your measured upload capacity. For a mostly static scene, 720p at 30 fps is a reasonable lower-workload starting point if it looks good to you; that is a practical inference from OBS’s guidance, not a YouTube requirement. Use 1080p30 if the added detail matters for your image or viewers.

These are YouTube’s published H.264 encoder bitrate ranges, checked in 2026; the recommended value is guidance, not a requirement that every stream use the top of the range. YouTube advises using a reliable setting that fits the internet connection and running an upload speed test. Leave headroom for connection variation rather than choosing a bitrate your upload can barely sustain.
In OBS’s stream output settings, use CBR and set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1, and recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Match the settings you choose to YouTube’s current encoder guidance and the codec OBS is actually sending; the bitrate examples above are specifically for H.264. Test the complete setup before leaving it unattended
- Set up the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule the live stream and copy its stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a recording or share it publicly.
- Apply the Windows and OBS settings. Confirm the PC is plugged in, the screen timeout is set as intended, and the sleep timeout will not interrupt an active broadcast.
- Run a test stream. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. Listen for dropouts or clipping and check that the image is composed correctly.
- Check stream health and messages. Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators while the test is running. If the stream reports a bitrate or connection problem, reduce the bitrate or resolve the network issue before relying on an unattended broadcast.
- Verify the screen-off behavior. Let the display turn off during the test and confirm the PC remains awake and OBS continues sending the stream. Recheck after changing power mode or output settings.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted stream will produce a single archive of unlimited duration; check current YouTube Studio stream-management behavior when planning a long broadcast. The setup also cannot prevent every disruption: sleep, a power loss, a network interruption, or YouTube-side behavior may still interrupt a stream.
Measure your own PC’s power use
Windows and OBS guidance can reduce unnecessary background and encoding work, but neither establishes a wattage saving for this specific setup. If you want a before-and-after figure, an optional plug-in electricity usage monitor can measure the PC under your actual streaming workload. Compare readings over similar periods with the stream and peripherals configured the same way; results will depend on the computer and workload. No particular monitor is endorsed here.
