The best all-purpose mace enchantments in Minecraft 1.21 are Density V, Wind Burst III, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. Density increases smash-attack damage, Wind Burst launches you upward for chained attacks, and Unbreaking with Mending keeps the mace usable. For player-versus-player combat against heavily armored opponents, replace Density with Breach IV. These choices apply to vanilla Java and Bedrock Edition, but command syntax differs by edition and Java subversion.
Best mace enchantments at a glance
| Use case | Recommended build | Why |
|---|---|---|
| General smash attacks | Density V, Wind Burst III, Unbreaking III, Mending I | Maximum fall-based damage, aerial chaining, and durability |
| PvP against armored players | Breach IV, Wind Burst III, Unbreaking III, Mending I | Reduces armor effectiveness instead of adding fall-distance damage |
| Undead mobs and the Wither | Smite V, Wind Burst III, Unbreaking III, Mending I | Increases damage against undead targets |
| Arthropods | Bane of Arthropods V, Wind Burst III, Unbreaking III, Mending I | Specialized damage against arthropod mobs |
Density and Breach are not upgrades that can be combined. They are competing specializations, so choose based on whether you want stronger smash damage or better performance against armor.

What the mace does before enchantments
A mace smash attack activates when you fall more than 1.5 blocks before hitting a target. Its base smash damage scales with the distance fallen:
- The first three fallen blocks add 4 damage per block.
- The next five blocks add 2 damage per block.
- Every block after that adds 1 damage per block.
A successful smash negates the fall damage accumulated from that fall and resets your vertical momentum. This is why mace enchantments should be evaluated around aerial attacks rather than ordinary ground swings. See the official Minecraft 1.21 Java release notes and Bedrock 1.21 changelog for the edition-specific release information.

Density V: best for smash damage
Density adds 0.5 damage for every fallen block per enchantment level during a mace smash attack. At Density V, that is an additional 2.5 damage per fallen block, making it the natural choice for players who attack from towers, scaffolding, elytra-assisted approaches, or repeated Wind Burst launches.
Density is compatible with Wind Burst, so adding mobility does not sacrifice the mace’s fall-distance specialization. It is commonly available from the Enchanting Table and from enchanted books in random loot chests. Density can reach level V.
Breach IV: best against armor
Breach reduces the target’s armor effectiveness by 15% per level. Breach IV therefore reduces armor effectiveness by 60%. Its benefit is most relevant against armored players and other targets whose survivability depends heavily on armor.
Breach is not a general damage multiplier. It does not add Density’s fall-distance damage and should not be described as increasing every type of damage against armored targets. Breach is available through the Enchanting Table and enchanted books in random loot, but it is rarer than Density.
Wind Burst III: the mobility enchantment
Wind Burst launches the attacker upward after a successful smash attack, making another aerial smash possible. Each level adds another 7 blocks to the bounce height, and the maximum level is III.

Wind Burst is a treasure enchantment. Naturally generated loot supplies only Wind Burst I books from Ominous Vaults in Trial Chambers; Wind Burst II and III must be created by combining lower-level books or enchanted items in an anvil. It is not normally offered by the Enchanting Table, villager trades, or ordinary enchanted-book loot.
To reach Wind Burst III through normal survival gameplay, combine two Wind Burst I books to make Wind Burst II, then combine two Wind Burst II books to make Wind Burst III. This costs experience levels and requires multiple books or Wind Burst-enchanted maces.
Wind Burst is powerful, but it is not unlimited fall-damage protection. Its behavior differs from the mace’s normal smash protection. In particular, Bedrock’s 1.21.20 update fixed a bug in which attacking with a Wind Burst mace incorrectly negated fall damage. Treat each launch as a movement effect, not a guarantee that every subsequent landing is safe. The relevant details are documented in the Bedrock 1.21.20 changelog.
Smite V: best for undead targets
Smite V increases damage against undead mobs. It is the best damage specialization when the mace is dedicated to zombies, skeletons, wither skeletons, the Wither, and other undead targets.
Smite is compatible with Wind Burst, Unbreaking, Mending, and Fire Aspect, but it cannot be combined normally with Density, Breach, or Bane of Arthropods. For a general-purpose weapon, Density is usually more broadly useful; for an undead-focused weapon, Smite is the correct choice.

Bane of Arthropods V: a narrow specialist choice
Bane of Arthropods V increases damage against arthropod mobs. It can make sense for a dedicated cave-spider or silverfish weapon, but it is a poor default for most players because its bonus is restricted to that mob category.
Bane of Arthropods cannot coexist normally with Density, Breach, or Smite. Pair it with Wind Burst, Unbreaking, and Mending if you specifically want an arthropod-hunting mace.
Unbreaking III and Mending I: the durability package
Unbreaking III reduces durability consumption, while Mending I repairs the mace when the holder collects experience orbs. These are the standard long-term additions to any serious mace.
Mending is a treasure enchantment and is not normally offered by the Enchanting Table. It is commonly obtained through other treasure-enchantment sources and then applied with an anvil. If you use the mace frequently, prioritize both durability enchantments after choosing Density, Breach, Smite, or Bane of Arthropods.

Fire Aspect II sets the struck target on fire. It adds burning damage, but it does not increase the mace’s fall-distance scaling, so it does not replace Density, Breach, or a target-specific enchantment.

Fire Aspect and Wind Burst are not listed as mutually exclusive, but practical testing references report that Fire Aspect can trigger the target’s damage-immunity window and may prevent Wind Burst from activating in some attack situations. For a reliable chaining mace, leaving Fire Aspect off is the safer choice. For ordinary combat or utility, Fire Aspect II remains a valid optional enchantment. See the Minecraft Wiki enchantment guide for the documented interaction notes.
Every compatible mace enchantment in vanilla 1.21
The vanilla mace accepts these enchantments:
- Mending I
- Unbreaking III
- Smite V
- Bane of Arthropods V
- Fire Aspect II
- Curse of Vanishing I
- Density V
- Breach IV
- Wind Burst III
Sharpness, Looting, Knockback, and Sweeping Edge are not normal mace enchantments in released vanilla 1.21. Sharpness compatibility existed as a pre-release bug, but Java 1.21 Pre-Release 4 fixed the issue. Guides based on early snapshots or pre-release footage may therefore recommend an enchantment that does not apply to the released game. The correction is listed in the official Java 1.21 Pre-Release 4 notes.
Mutually exclusive enchantments
Normal vanilla enchanting, anvil use, and enchanted-book application do not allow these combinations:
Recommended Free Tools
- Density and Breach
- Density and Smite
- Density and Bane of Arthropods
- Breach and Smite
- Breach and Bane of Arthropods
- Smite and Bane of Arthropods
The restriction works in both directions. An anvil cannot be used to turn a Density mace into a Density-and-Breach mace, and Bedrock’s /enchant command does not bypass these compatibility rules.
How to obtain the best enchantments
Using an Enchanting Table
- Open an Enchanting Table.
- Place the mace in the item slot.
- Place Lapis Lazuli in the lapis slot.
- Choose one of the three randomly generated offers.
The table does not let you select any enchantment by name. Density is common, while Breach is rare, so repeated rolls may be needed for Breach. Enchanting books and combining them with the mace in an anvil gives you more control over the final build.

Using an anvil
- Open an anvil.
- Place the mace in the left input slot.
- Place the enchanted book in the right input slot.
- Take the result from the output slot after paying the displayed experience cost.
Use the anvil to add Mending, Unbreaking, Wind Burst, and your chosen damage specialization. Avoid combining incompatible books, because the result will not be produced through normal vanilla mechanics. Mojang’s official anvil guide explains the basic combination process.

Java Edition 1.21.0–1.21.4
These versions use the levels wrapper inside the enchantments component:
/give @s minecraft:mace[enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:density":5,"minecraft:wind_burst":3,"minecraft:unbreaking":3,"minecraft:mending":1}}] 1
For a Breach mace:
/give @s minecraft:mace[enchantments={levels:{"minecraft:breach":4,"minecraft:wind_burst":3,"minecraft:unbreaking":3,"minecraft:mending":1}}] 1
Java Edition 1.21.5 and later
Java 1.21.5 removed the levels wrapper:
/give @s minecraft:mace[enchantments={"minecraft:density":5,"minecraft:wind_burst":3,"minecraft:unbreaking":3,"minecraft:mending":1}] 1
Breach variant:
/give @s minecraft:mace[enchantments={"minecraft:breach":4,"minecraft:wind_burst":3,"minecraft:unbreaking":3,"minecraft:mending":1}] 1
A command copied from a Java 1.21.0–1.21.4 guide may fail in 1.21.5 or later because of this syntax change. Refer to the Java 1.21.5 release notes.
Bedrock Edition
Bedrock does not use Java’s bracketed item-component syntax. Give yourself the mace, hold it in your main hand, and apply each enchantment to the selected item:

The Bedrock command acts on the target player’s selected item. If the mace is not held when /enchant runs, the command can fail or affect the wrong item. Bedrock’s official references document the /give command and /enchant command.
Which mace should you make?
- Choose Density V if you want the strongest general smash attacks and regularly create fall distance.
- Choose Breach IV if your main opponents wear strong armor, especially in PvP.
- Choose Smite V for a dedicated undead-fighting mace.
- Choose Bane of Arthropods V only for a specialized arthropod weapon.
- Add Wind Burst III when you want aerial mobility and chained attacks, but practice the timing and manage fall risk.
- Add Unbreaking III and Mending I to any mace you plan to keep using.
- Skip Fire Aspect II on a chaining-focused mace if reliable Wind Burst activation matters more than burning damage.
For most survival players, the final answer is Density V, Wind Burst III, Unbreaking III, and Mending I. Keep a separate Breach IV mace for armored PvP rather than trying to combine both damage specializations.
