For a reliable modded Minecraft Java server in 2026, start with Lithium, FerriteCore, ModernFix, Spark and Chunky. Use the Fabric versions when your pack runs Fabric; on Forge or NeoForge, use FerriteCore, ModernFix, Spark and Chunky, adding Canary only when a build matches your exact Minecraft version. These choices target server tick time, memory use, startup and chunk-generation spikes. Sodium, Embeddium and Rubidium improve a player’s rendering client, not the server’s TPS.
Build numbers and loader support change quickly, so match every file to the server’s Minecraft version and loader, verify the project’s latest release, and back up the world before upgrading.

What a server optimization mod actually changes
A dedicated server spends its time simulating entities, processing redstone and block updates, tracking players, loading or generating chunks, and handling network requests. A server-side optimization mod changes those calculations or their memory and startup overhead. The practical result is usually steadier tick time, fewer pauses while players explore, faster restarts, or a smaller memory footprint.
TPS (ticks per second) is the useful server measure: Minecraft targets 20 TPS, with one tick every 50 milliseconds. If a tick takes longer, the server falls behind and players see delayed block breaks, rubber-banding or slow mob movement. A rendering mod can make a player’s frame rate higher while leaving those tick times untouched.

The 2026 recommendations below come from current mod guides and the available primary Modrinth listings. The guides are editorial selections rather than controlled, identical benchmarks; measure your own world with Spark before and after each change. A 2026 optimization-mod roundup and a separate server-mod guide both place the same small group at the center of a practical stack.
The core 2026 server stack
| Mod | Best fit | What it addresses | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lithium | Fabric; selected NeoForge versions | Efficient game-logic calculations such as pathfinding, chunk loading, entity tracking and collision handling. | Use a file built for your exact Minecraft version and loader. NeoForge availability is version-specific. |
| FerriteCore | Fabric, Forge and NeoForge | Reduces memory use, particularly in large modpacks. | It is primarily a memory optimization, not a substitute for diagnosing a CPU-bound tick. |
| ModernFix | Modded Fabric, Forge or NeoForge installations | Targets resource loading, model baking, mixin work and startup; useful when booting or restarting is slow. | Check the project release for your loader and Minecraft version before updating. |
| Spark | Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Bukkit-family servers | Profiles CPU, tick and memory behavior so you can identify the real bottleneck. | It measures problems; it does not automatically optimize them. |
| Chunky | Any supported server loader | Pre-generates a chosen area so exploration does not create chunks during a live session. | Generation is resource-intensive. Run it before opening the server to players and allow storage for the generated region. |
The overlap among the 2026 performance recommendations is useful: install the small, cross-cutting stack first, profile, then add targeted changes instead of piling on every mod in a list.

For a Fabric modded server, install Fabric Loader for the Minecraft version used by the world and then add Lithium, FerriteCore, ModernFix, Spark and Chunky. Add content mods only after this baseline starts cleanly. The Fabric/NeoForge 2026 overview describes this same order because it isolates performance changes from gameplay changes.
Install the Fabric baseline
- Record the exact Minecraft version, Java runtime required by that version, Fabric Loader build and Fabric API version used by the modpack. Do not mix a client profile’s versions into the server folder.
- Stop the server and make a complete copy of the world directory,
server.properties, whitelist, permissions files and the existingmodsfolder. - Install the Fabric server profile for the target Minecraft version. Start it once so Fabric creates its folders, then stop it after the first successful boot.
- Place the server-side files for Lithium, FerriteCore, ModernFix, Spark and Chunky in
mods. Add Fabric API only when the selected mod lists it as a dependency. - Start the server and watch the log for dependency errors, mixin failures or a mod declaring a different Minecraft range. Fix those errors before copying in content mods.
- Use Spark to capture a baseline during normal play, then use Chunky to pre-generate the world border or a measured radius during a maintenance window.
Lithium is designed to preserve game behavior while making common calculations more efficient, according to the technical descriptions collected by the server-mod guide. That does not mean every mod or every version is behavior-neutral, so test redstone-heavy areas, farms and datapacks after an update.
Forge and NeoForge: what changes
Forge-era projects do not always publish a build as quickly as Fabric projects. For Forge or NeoForge, begin with FerriteCore, ModernFix, Spark and Chunky. Add Canary when a current Canary build explicitly supports your loader and Minecraft version. Canary is a community-maintained, unofficial Lithium port for Forge and NeoForge, so its compatibility and maintenance are separate from Lithium’s Fabric releases; the distinction is summarized in this loader comparison.
Install the Forge or NeoForge baseline
- Identify whether the pack is Forge or NeoForge; they are not interchangeable. Record the exact Minecraft version, loader build and required Java version.
- Back up the world and configuration files while the server is stopped. A loader change can prevent the existing instance from starting, and a mod update can alter saved data.
- Install the matching dedicated-server profile, run it once, accept the EULA if appropriate for your deployment, and stop it after the initial folder creation.
- Add FerriteCore, ModernFix, Spark and Chunky builds that list your loader and Minecraft version. Add Canary only after confirming an exact matching release.
- Start with the content pack disabled if possible. A clean optimization-only boot makes a missing library or incompatible mixin easier to identify.
- Restore the content mods in groups, starting the server after each group. This gives you a short list when a crash appears.
Do not infer NeoForge support from a Fabric download page. Conversely, do not assume that a Forge project’s older release works on NeoForge simply because the mod name is the same.

Lithium NeoForge availability in practice
Sources have disagreed about how broadly Lithium supports NeoForge. The primary Modrinth version pages confirm several specific builds:
| Minecraft version | NeoForge Lithium build | Publication information | Verification link |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.21.1 | 0.15.3 | Published March 10, 2026; the listing supports client and server environments. | Modrinth 1.21.1 build |
| 1.21.4 | 0.15.1 | The listing provides client, server and combined environment options. | Modrinth 1.21.4 build |
| 1.21.11 | 0.21.1 | Published December 12, 2025. The page’s client/server label is internally inconsistent, so verify the downloadable file and loader metadata. | Modrinth 1.21.11 build |
This is not a complete compatibility list. Before installing Lithium on NeoForge, open Modrinth’s Versions tab, filter by your exact Minecraft release and loader, and check dependencies and environment labels. A search-result summary claiming that Lithium 0.14.6 disables LithiumHashPalette by default for versions 1.21.2–1.21.3 is not sufficiently verified to use as an installation assumption.
What each performance mod contributes
Lithium: reduce simulation overhead
Lithium rewrites or streamlines portions of the server’s game logic, including pathfinding, chunk loading, entity tracking and collision detection. It is most valuable when the profiler shows ordinary simulation work consuming tick time rather than a single runaway machine or plugin. Because it aims to retain vanilla behavior, it is a strong first test for a technical or lightly modded server.
FerriteCore: keep memory pressure under control
FerriteCore focuses on reducing memory consumption and is repeatedly recommended for large modpacks. Lower allocation and retained memory can reduce garbage-collection pauses and make a fixed RAM budget serve more mods, but it cannot repair an overloaded CPU or a world that is simply too large for the allocated disk and memory.

ModernFix is recommended when a modded server boots slowly or is restarted frequently. Descriptions of its optimizations include resource loading, model baking, mixin performance and other startup work. Startup improvements are operationally important for a host that restarts after crashes or performs scheduled updates, even when steady-state TPS was already acceptable.
Spark: find the cause before changing the stack
Spark works across Fabric, Forge, NeoForge and Bukkit, Spigot and Paper-style servers. Use it to distinguish CPU time in entities, chunks, block entities, garbage collection or a particular mod. Take a profile while the problem is visible, not only immediately after a restart. Save the report with the Minecraft version, loader, mod list, player count and activity that triggered the lag.

Chunky: move chunk generation to a maintenance window
Chunk generation is an avoidable source of exploration lag. Chunky pre-generates a defined area while no players are relying on the server. Set a border or radius that matches your actual play area; generating an unlimited world wastes CPU, disk space and time. Stop or throttle the task if it starves the server process, and monitor free disk space before starting.
C2ME: parallel chunk work, with a testing burden
One 2026 guide describes C2ME as using multiple CPU cores for chunk loading and generation. That can help a modern, high-core-count machine with exploration-heavy gameplay, but parallelism increases the importance of testing world-generation compatibility. Introduce it only after you have a backup and a Spark baseline, and remove it first if generation-related crashes or unusual world behavior appear.

Canary is commonly described as an unofficial Lithium port maintained by the community. Treat it as optional, not as a guaranteed replacement: check the project’s current release date, loader, Minecraft version and issue reports. If no matching build exists, leave Canary out rather than forcing an older jar into a newer pack.
Useful gameplay and administration mods
Performance is only one part of a playable server. Once the optimization baseline is stable, add utilities that solve a clear player or administrator need.
JEI for recipe discovery
Just Enough Items (JEI) gives players searchable recipes and usage information, which is especially valuable when a pack adds hundreds of components. Confirm whether the server requires the mod, the client, or both for the selected version; many recipe viewers need a matching client installation even when their data originates from server-side content.
WorldEdit for controlled construction
WorldEdit accelerates large builds and terrain edits. Restrict its permissions to trusted builders, create a backup before bulk operations, and avoid granting unrestricted selection or schematic commands to ordinary players. A fast editing tool can create more block updates than any optimization mod can hide.

FTB Essentials for player commands
FTB Essentials provides conveniences such as home, teleport-request and warp commands. Define cooldowns, warm-up times and permission groups so travel tools do not remove every survival constraint or become a source of abuse.
Create and memory planning
Create contraptions can add substantial block-entity and animation work. One guide estimates roughly 500 MB to 1 GB of extra memory depending on contraption complexity; that is a guide estimate, not a published figure from the mod’s author. Treat it as a planning range, profile a representative factory and leave headroom for the rest of the pack rather than allocating the estimate blindly.
Client-only rendering mods: helpful, but not server optimizers
Sodium on Fabric and Embeddium or Rubidium on Forge and NeoForge primarily improve client rendering. They can raise a player’s frame rate, reduce visual stutter or make shader-free play smoother, but they do not reduce server tick load and are not required in the dedicated server’s mods directory. The distinction is explicitly noted in this mod list.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInstall a rendering mod in the client profile only when its release matches the client’s Minecraft version, loader and other rendering dependencies. A client can often join without the renderer, while a server should not be given a client-only jar. Keep visual troubleshooting separate from TPS troubleshooting: if frames are low but Spark shows healthy tick times, investigate the client’s renderer, memory allocation, drivers and view distance instead.
Version claims circulating for Embeddium, Oculus and Pufferfish are especially volatile. One guide reported no Embeddium full release newer than 1.21.1, no Oculus build newer than 1.20.1 and a newest Pufferfish download of 1.21.8, but those figures were not independently verified against Modrinth or CurseForge. Check the current project pages rather than using those numbers as a compatibility rule.
Choose a stack by the problem you can observe
| Observed symptom | First action | Likely useful mod or practice |
|---|---|---|
| TPS drops when players explore new terrain | Profile during exploration and check chunk-generation time. | Chunky pre-generation; consider C2ME only after compatibility testing. |
| Long pauses during startup or frequent restarts | Compare boot logs and startup duration before adding content changes. | ModernFix; remove obsolete or duplicate libraries. |
| Out-of-memory errors or heavy garbage-collection pauses | Profile memory, inspect the largest mods and confirm the Java heap is appropriate. | FerriteCore; reduce unnecessary content and reserve headroom for world and JVM overhead. |
| Steady tick slowdown with many entities or farms | Capture a Spark profile while the farm is active. | Lithium where supported; tune entity counts, simulation distance or the offending mod. |
| Players report low FPS but server TPS is normal | Measure client frame time separately. | Sodium, Embeddium or Rubidium on the client, not the server. |
| Large factory causes lag after adding Create | Profile the contraption area and observe memory and block-entity time. | Optimize the design and budget memory; the 500 MB–1 GB figure is only a guide estimate. |
Measure changes with Spark instead of guessing
- Install the Spark build for your loader and Minecraft version, then restart once to confirm it loads.
- Reproduce the issue: have the normal number of players explore, operate the factory or visit the farm that causes complaints.
- Start a Spark profiler recording using the command syntax shown by the installed build’s help output. Keep the recording long enough to include the repeating workload, not just a single spike.
- Stop the recording and inspect the report for tick-time contributors, garbage collection, chunk work and the specific entities or block entities at the top.
- Change one variable—such as adding Lithium, pre-generating a region or limiting a farm—then repeat the same workload and compare reports.
Keep the profile URL or exported report with the server’s version and mod list. A result from a quiet test world cannot establish how a public, exploration-heavy world will behave.

Upgrade and rollback checklist
- Read the release page for every mod and confirm the Minecraft version, loader and dependencies.
- Check the release date: Forge-era projects may lag behind current Minecraft versions, while a newer-looking jar may target a different minor release.
- Back up the world, configuration and permissions before changing server-side jars.
- Update the loader and its libraries in a planned maintenance window; keep a known-good copy of the previous
modsfolder. - Start the updated server with no players, review the complete log, then test critical farms, redstone, dimensions, commands and world borders.
- If the server crashes, restore the previous jars and backup, then add updates one at a time until the incompatible file is identified.
- Never copy client-only rendering mods into the dedicated server, and never assume a similarly named Forge, NeoForge and Fabric file is interchangeable.
Common failure modes and fixes
The server stops during mixin application
The mod targets another Minecraft or loader version, or a second mod applies an incompatible transformation. Remove the newest addition, read the first error in the log rather than the final cascade, and install the exact dependency versions listed by the project.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Players cannot connect after an update
Compare the client and server mod lists and loader builds. Content mods that add blocks, items or dimensions generally require matching client files, while server-only optimizers should not be copied to a client unless their project says they support both environments.
TPS is still low after installing the core stack
Optimization mods cannot compensate for an unbounded world border, excessive simulation distance, a malfunctioning farm or a single mod that dominates tick time. Capture Spark data during the incident, then tune or remove the identified workload.
Chunk pre-generation makes the server appear frozen
Generation deliberately consumes CPU, memory, disk I/O and storage. Run it with players offline, choose a finite radius, monitor progress and stop it if the machine becomes unresponsive. Resume during another maintenance window rather than allowing the task to compete with players.
A newer jar has fewer features than expected
Check whether the project has split builds by loader or Minecraft minor version. The absence of a current Forge build does not prove that the Fabric or NeoForge build is compatible, and an older build may contain a different dependency set.
Recommended Free Tools
A practical recommendation for 2026
For Fabric, deploy Lithium, FerriteCore, ModernFix, Spark and Chunky first, then add JEI, WorldEdit, FTB Essentials and gameplay content according to the server’s purpose. For Forge or NeoForge, use FerriteCore, ModernFix, Spark and Chunky, adding Canary only when its release exactly matches the pack. Add C2ME only for a measured chunk-generation problem and only after a rollback-ready test.
Keep Sodium, Embeddium and Rubidium in client profiles when players need rendering improvements; they are not TPS fixes. Treat every build number as temporary: check the project’s release page at the moment you install, record what you used, and test the world after each change.
