The right choice depends on the experience you want, your Minecraft edition and version, and whether you are willing to install the server’s exact modpack. As of September 2026, directory listings offer useful candidates, but their rankings and player counts are snapshots—not proof of server quality, safety, or reliability.
Which modded Minecraft server should you try?
Start with the kind of world you want to play in, then use current listings to find servers that support it. A directory page updated September 14, 2026, lists BeyondMC first, Cobblemon.gg second, and MMO Realms third. It categorizes BeyondMC as modded survival/SMP and associates Cobblemon.gg and MMO Realms with Cobblemon-related play. The addresses shown are play.beyondmc.net, play.cobblemon.gg, and play.mmorealms.gg.
These are candidates to investigate, not a definitive quality ranking. Minecraft-bestservers.com says its order combines editor picks with votes cast during the current month; it listed 78 modded servers on September 14, 2026. That is the directory’s count, not a count of every modded server worldwide. The site says its listed servers are free to join, while some may offer optional paid ranks or cosmetics.
For modpack-specific discovery, ServerRadar’s modded listings included examples such as All the Mods 10: To the Sky, All the Mods 10, DawnCraft, and SkyFactory 4 in a September 9, 2026 snapshot. Choose by gameplay rather than treating all modded servers as interchangeable:

- Cobblemon or creature collecting: look for a server explicitly listing Cobblemon and confirm its supported pack and game versions.
- Technology or magic: find the specific pack and progression style you want; the broad label “modded” does not tell you what a server’s world contains.
- Quests and structured progression: questing packs guide players through objectives, while kitchen-sink packs offer a broad collection of mods and expert packs can demand more planning or knowledge.
- General modded survival: an SMP listing may be a better fit if you want a shared survival world rather than a pack built around a particular theme.
How to compare servers before joining
Use directories to narrow the field, then verify the details on the server’s own current page or community channel. ServerRadar advises comparing edition, game mode, supported version, player count, online status, and server description. Also check the rules, moderation approach, and whether access requires an application or whitelist.
| What to check | Why it matters | Where to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Gameplay or exact modpack | “Modded” covers very different experiences, from Cobblemon to technology, magic, quests, and broad survival packs. | Current server listing and server description |
| Java or Bedrock edition | A server may support only one edition; do not assume cross-play. | Current listing and server information |
| Minecraft and modpack versions | The client and pack must match what the server supports; the same pack name can have multiple versions. | Current listing and the server’s own instructions |
| Online status and player count | These can help indicate whether a server is active, but directory figures are snapshots and do not establish long-term stability. | Live listing, checked shortly before joining |
| Rules, moderation, and community fit | Votes and population do not tell you how a community is moderated or whether its culture suits you. | Server rules and community channels |
| Whitelist or application | Some servers may require approval before you can connect. | Server’s current access instructions |
Interpret ranking and status figures narrowly. ServerRadar says its organic rankings use community votes from the last 30 days and that sponsored placements are separated or labeled. In its September 9, 2026 snapshot, it reported 39 of 47 matching servers online, 1,398 players, and 92.6% average 90-day uptime for the listed set. Those are dated figures reported by that directory—not a census or independent assessment of each server’s safety, moderation, or future uptime.
How do I join a modded Minecraft server?
- Choose a server by experience. Decide whether you want Cobblemon, technology or magic, quest progression, or a general modded survival world.
- Confirm edition and versions. Check whether the server accepts Java or Bedrock, its Minecraft version, and the precise modpack version. A matching pack name alone may not be enough.
- Install the specified pack. Use the launcher or platform identified by the listing. Depending on where the pack is published, examples include CurseForge, the Modrinth app, FTB Launcher, and Prism. Select the exact version the server supports.
- Launch the matching profile. Start Minecraft from the installed modpack profile rather than a vanilla profile.
- Add the server address. In Minecraft’s multiplayer menu, add the address shown in the server’s current instructions. Check the address immediately before connecting; directory entries can change.
- Read the access and community information. Check whether you need a whitelist or application, and review the current rules and moderation information before playing.
If the connection fails, first compare the Minecraft version and modpack version in your launcher against the server’s current instructions. Then confirm that you launched the modded profile, copied the current address correctly, and completed any access requirements. A directory listing alone cannot resolve server-specific connection problems.

What do directory listings establish—and what do they not?
Directories are useful for discovering candidates and comparing listing details, but their claims should be read in context. Minecraft-bestservers.com is a third-party directory, not a recommendation from Mojang Studios or Microsoft. ServerRadar reports listing status and player figures, but a directory’s monitoring or ranking claims do not independently establish the quality of a server’s community.
Votes, a large player count, and a reported uptime figure can help you decide what to investigate; none tells you whether a server’s moderation is effective, whether its rules suit you, or whether the experience will remain stable. Verify those points through each server’s current rules and community channels. Addresses, versions, status, and populations are volatile, so recheck them when you are ready to join.
