A playable factions server also needs a permissions system (LuckPerms), a compatibility layer for economy and chat (Vault), commands and economy (EssentialsX), protected spawn regions (WorldGuard), and WorldEdit or FastAsyncWorldEdit for large builds. Add one live map plugin—Dynmap, BlueMap, Pl3xMap, or SquareMap—if players need to see territory without opening the game.
The right core depends on the Minecraft server software and version you will run, the claim and raid rules you want, the integrations you need, and how much configuration and migration work your staff can maintain. Test every plugin combination on the exact Paper or Purpur build you intend to publish, especially after a factions-core update.

What a factions server actually needs
A factions plugin creates the social and territorial layer: players form factions, claim land, manage relationships, and compete for territory. It is not a complete server platform. Without permissions, economy, protection, editing tools, and (often) a map, staff end up replacing missing systems with ad-hoc commands and players encounter inconsistent rules.
Think of the stack as six layers:
- Factions core: FactionsUUID or SaberFactions manages factions, claims, power, relationships, raids, and any upgrades exposed by that core.
- Permissions and chat: LuckPerms defines staff and player groups; Vault lets compatible plugins read those groups and exchange economy or chat data.
- Server utilities: EssentialsX supplies common commands, signs, kits, and economy, with optional chat features that use Vault and LuckPerms.
- Region protection: WorldGuard protects spawn and other deliberately defined regions and controls build or PvP rules there.
- World editing: WorldEdit or FastAsyncWorldEdit (FAWE) lets staff create and repair large structures efficiently.
- Territory visibility: Dynmap, BlueMap, Pl3xMap, or SquareMap can publish a browser map when an in-game faction map is not enough.
Install only the layers your rules require, but do not confuse one layer with another. In particular, EssentialsX’s basic build-prevention features are not a substitute for WorldGuard’s region system.

Choose the factions core first
| Decision point | FactionsUUID | SaberFactions |
|---|---|---|
| Best fit | A documented integration-heavy setup that needs established hooks into utility, permission, economy, protection, and map plugins. | A free, performance-optimized alternative with a broad set of built-in gameplay and progression features. |
| Documented integrations | Direct hooks into Dynmap, EssentialsX, LuckPerms, PlaceholderAPI, Sentinel, Vault, and WorldGuard. | Integration details must be checked against the release you select; Vault is identified as a dependency in setup guidance. |
| Gameplay emphasis | Choose after reviewing the release’s claim, power, relationship, raid, and upgrade behavior. | Grace period, alt system, anti-spam, faction upgrades, faction points, command cooldowns, and additional power, member, and redstone upgrades are documented features. |
| Version checkpoint | Version 4.0 changes the plugin name and internal naming, so older add-ons and bridges can require compatibility work. | Confirm the plugin build supports your exact Minecraft, Paper, or Purpur version before upgrading a live world. |
| Maintenance question | Plan for integration checks whenever the 4.0 naming or an extension changes. | Plan around the configuration and upgrade systems you actually enable; more features mean more rules to document. |
FactionsUUID: the integration-first choice
FactionsUUID is the stronger starting point when your design depends on several established plugins talking to the factions core. Its official 4.0 documentation lists direct hooks for Dynmap, EssentialsX, LuckPerms, PlaceholderAPI, Sentinel, Vault, and WorldGuard. That reduces the need for unofficial glue, but it does not eliminate testing: a hook documented by the core still has to work with the versions you install together.
Version 4.0 deserves a migration checkpoint. The documentation states that the release changes the plugin name and internal naming. Treat that as a compatibility event rather than a routine file replacement. Check every extension, permission node, placeholder, script, bridge, and backup procedure against the 4.0 naming before you move an established world.

Match the bridge to both sides of that pair; do not assume a bridge built for an earlier core release will remain valid after an update.
SaberFactions: the feature-rich free alternative
SaberFactions is described by its repository as a free, performance-optimized factions plugin. Its documented feature set includes a grace period for a new server or faction, an alt system, anti-spam controls, faction upgrades, faction points, command cooldowns, and additional power, member, and redstone upgrades. Those options are useful when progression and anti-abuse mechanics are part of the server’s identity rather than optional extras.
Because SaberFactions exposes more gameplay switches, write down the intended rules before enabling them. Decide how long the grace period lasts, what an alt is allowed to do, which upgrades are earned or purchased, and whether cooldowns apply to all players or only selected commands. Verify the release’s dependency list and version support on your test server; setup guidance identifies Vault as a dependency.

The supporting plugin stack
EssentialsX for everyday commands and economy
EssentialsX’s core jar provides commands, signs, kits, and economy functions that players expect on a survival server. It is a utility layer around the factions core, not a replacement for faction claims or region policy.
Its chat features use Vault and LuckPerms to read prefixes, suffixes, and group membership. Install and configure those three together if you want rank labels in chat. If you do not need EssentialsX chat, you can still use EssentialsX for commands, kits, signs, and economy while another chat system handles formatting.
Vault as the compatibility layer
Vault gives economy, chat, and permission-aware plugins a common interface. In this stack it allows EssentialsX and compatible factions features to communicate with the economy provider and with LuckPerms groups. Vault does not create ranks or money by itself; it exposes the services supplied by other plugins.
LuckPerms for ranks and permissions
Use LuckPerms to create groups such as default, member, moderator, and administrator, then assign only the faction, EssentialsX, WorldGuard, and editing permissions each group needs. Its prefixes and suffixes can be consumed by EssentialsX chat through Vault. Keep a written permission matrix so a new faction command or upgrade cannot silently grant staff-level powers to ordinary players.
WorldGuard for spawn and special regions
WorldGuard is the region-protection layer. Use it for spawn, shops, event arenas, portals, and any other area whose build, break, PvP, or interaction rules must override normal survival play. EssentialsX explicitly distinguishes its own anti-build capability from full region protection and recommends WorldGuard for restricting building in specific regions.

Do not blanket-protect the entire survival world if factions are supposed to claim and raid there. Define a small number of carefully documented regions, then test their priority and PvP settings against faction claims. If FactionsUUID is your core, use the compatible bridge when you need faction-aware WorldGuard behavior.
WorldEdit or FAWE for large edits
WorldEdit is the conventional choice for selecting and transforming large areas. FAWE is an alternative for administrators who need faster, less disruptive large-scale edits. Use either tool for spawn construction, terrain repair, arena preparation, and controlled map changes; keep editing permissions limited to trusted staff and take a backup before any bulk operation.
Pick one map plugin for territory visibility
A web map is optional, but it is valuable on a factions server where players need to understand borders, bases, and contested areas. The documented factions integrations include BlueMap, Dynmap, Pl3xMap, and SquareMap.
| Map option | When to consider it | Operational caution |
|---|---|---|
| Dynmap | Choose when direct FactionsUUID integration is important. | Confirm that the map and factions releases expose the territory data you expect. |
| BlueMap | Choose when your community prefers a modern browser-based world presentation and your integration supports it. | Check rendering load and faction-overlay behavior on a staging world. |
| Pl3xMap | Choose when it matches your server software and the faction overlay requirements. | Verify the exact integration version after core updates. |
| SquareMap | Choose when a lightweight map presentation fits your staff workflow. | Test border refresh timing and permissions for public versus staff views. |
Run one map system rather than several copies of the same world renderer unless you have a specific reason. Rendering and web-serving work can add administrative overhead even when gameplay performance remains acceptable.

There is no single “1.21-compatible” answer that covers every build of every plugin. Select the exact Minecraft version, then the exact Paper or Purpur build, and verify each plugin against that combination. Paper and Purpur can load the same jar in many cases, but a plugin’s own support statement and your chosen build are the authority.

- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
Use this checklist before opening the server:
- Record the Minecraft, Paper or Purpur, Java, and plugin versions in a change log.
- Check the factions core’s supported versions and dependency list.
- Check the map plugin and any WorldGuard bridge against the same core version.
- Review permission-node or placeholder changes when upgrading FactionsUUID to 4.0.
- Start a clean staging instance and inspect the startup log for missing, disabled, or incompatible plugins.
- Join as a normal player and as a staff account; test claims, unclaims, faction relations, economy, chat prefixes, region rules, and map updates.
Installation order that minimizes conflicts
- Prepare a test server. Copy the production world only after taking a backup, and test upgrades on the copy first. Keep the test server inaccessible to players while migrations run.
- Install the server software. Set the target Paper or Purpur build and Java runtime, start once to generate files, then stop the server cleanly.
- Install the factions core. Add either FactionsUUID or SaberFactions, start the server, and resolve dependency errors before adding optional integrations.
- Add the service layer. Install Vault, LuckPerms, and EssentialsX. Create groups and a minimal permission set before giving staff broad access.
- Add protection and editing. Install WorldGuard plus WorldEdit or FAWE. Define spawn and event regions, then verify that survival claims still behave as intended outside those regions.
- Add integrations selectively. Install a map plugin and any required bridge only after the core and service layer are stable. For FactionsUUID 4.0.0, the documented WorldGuardFactionsBridge compatibility point is version 1.3.9 from August 2025.
- Test with representative accounts. Use a fresh player, a faction leader, a moderator, and an administrator. Check command visibility, claim ownership, power loss, raids, relationship changes, upgrades, economy transactions, and protected-region behavior.
- Promote the tested files. Copy the tested configuration and database or world data to production during a maintenance window, retain the old backup, and record the exact versions used.
Design the rules before you tune the files
Players experience a factions server through rules, not through a plugin list. Write the rules for these mechanics before changing values:
Claims and power
Define how a faction earns or loses power, how many chunks a member can support, and what happens when power falls below claimed land. Make the explanation visible to players so a lost claim is understood as a rule rather than a staff decision.
Raids and protection windows
Decide whether raids are always possible, restricted during a grace period, or limited by scheduled events. SaberFactions documents a grace-period feature; if you enable it, publish its duration and what actions it blocks. Use WorldGuard only for deliberately protected regions such as spawn, not as an accidental shield for every base.
Relationships and diplomacy
Specify how allies, truces, and enemies affect PvP, block interaction, and command access. Test both sides of every relationship with ordinary player accounts; an administrator account can bypass a permission or region rule and hide a real problem.
Progression and upgrades
List which upgrades exist, their costs, and their limits. SaberFactions documents faction points plus power, member, and redstone upgrades. If your core exposes different upgrades, document those separately instead of promising mechanics that the installed release does not provide.

Performance and maintenance practices
No authoritative comparative performance benchmark establishes one of these cores as universally fastest. Treat “performance-optimized” as the description attached to SaberFactions, not as a guarantee for every configuration. Actual load depends on world size, claims, map rendering, redstone, player count, and the other plugins running on the server.

- Measure changes on a staging copy before applying them to production.
- Schedule map renders and large WorldEdit or FAWE operations for quiet periods.
- Keep only the integrations you use; every bridge adds another compatibility surface.
- Back up faction data, worlds, configuration, and permissions before core or bridge updates.
- Maintain a rollback plan that includes the previous plugin jars and database files, not just a world download.
- After updates, retest claims, relationships, protection, placeholders, map overlays, economy, and permissions rather than relying on a successful startup alone.
Troubleshooting guide
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
| The server disables a factions plugin at startup. | Missing dependency or unsupported server/plugin version. | Read the first dependency or compatibility error in the startup log, install the required layer, and retest on the exact Paper or Purpur build. |
| Chat prefixes or suffixes are missing. | LuckPerms, Vault, or EssentialsX chat is not connected or the group has no prefix. | Verify the group assignment, Vault service, and EssentialsX chat configuration with a non-admin account. |
| Spawn protection does not behave as expected. | EssentialsX anti-build was used as a region system, or WorldGuard priorities and flags conflict. | Create and test an explicit WorldGuard region; do not expect EssentialsX alone to provide region protection. |
| Faction borders are absent from the web map. | The map integration is missing, disabled, or incompatible with the factions core. | Check the map’s documented integration and version pairing, then regenerate or refresh the overlay on a test world. |
| An update breaks commands, placeholders, or a bridge. | Internal naming or API changes, particularly around FactionsUUID 4.0. | Review the core’s migration notes, update the affected extension to a compatible release, and restore the backup if data conversion is incomplete. |
| Players can build or fight in a protected area. | A WorldGuard flag, region priority, or faction bridge rule is wrong. | Test the exact coordinates with a normal player, inspect overlapping regions, and verify the bridge only after basic WorldGuard behavior works. |
Practical stack blueprints
Integration-focused community server
Use FactionsUUID, EssentialsX, Vault, LuckPerms, WorldGuard, WorldEdit or FAWE, and Dynmap, BlueMap, Pl3xMap, or SquareMap. Choose this pattern when direct hooks into several established utility and map systems matter more than minimizing the number of configuration surfaces. If you select FactionsUUID 4.0, schedule a naming and bridge audit before launch.
Progression-heavy competitive server
Use SaberFactions with Vault, LuckPerms, EssentialsX, WorldGuard, and an editing tool. Add one map after the core rules are stable. This pattern suits a server that wants a grace period, anti-spam, faction points, cooldowns, and power, member, or redstone upgrades, provided staff are willing to explain and balance those systems.
Small private server
Start with one factions core, LuckPerms, Vault, EssentialsX, WorldGuard, and WorldEdit or FAWE. Delay a live map until players actually need it. Fewer integrations make upgrades and troubleshooting easier, while the core still supplies claims and faction gameplay.
Final selection checklist
- Have you selected a specific Minecraft and Paper or Purpur build?
- Does the factions core provide the claim, power, raid, relationship, and upgrade behavior your rules require?
- Have you verified every dependency and bridge against that core version?
- Are LuckPerms groups and Vault services working for ordinary players?
- Is WorldGuard protecting only the regions that should be protected?
- Can staff edit safely with WorldEdit or FAWE and restore a backup?
- Does the chosen map show territory accurately without unnecessary duplicate rendering?
- Have you tested a FactionsUUID 4.0 migration or a SaberFactions upgrade on a copy of the world?
For most new servers, the dependable path is to choose FactionsUUID when documented integrations and a broad utility ecosystem are the priority, or SaberFactions when its free progression and upgrade features define the game design. In either case, the supporting stack—not the factions jar alone—determines whether claims, ranks, economy, protection, editing, and territory maps work as one coherent server.
