A Squad server can start normally and still be invisible, unreachable, unable to load its rotation, or reject administrators. The reliable fix is to troubleshoot in order: update the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD, record the ports in the actual launch command and configuration, verify the complete route through the host firewall and router from an outside network, then isolate configuration, map-layer, mod, and RCON errors. A local “running” status proves only that the process started; it does not prove that players on the Internet can discover or join it.

Start with the symptom, not a random setting
Use the first symptom that matches what players see. Each branch has a different highest-value check, so changing several files at once makes the eventual cause harder to identify.

Before changing anything, capture a usable baseline
Write down the dedicated-server build, operating system, complete launch command, server name, configured game/query/beacon/RCON ports, active mods, and the exact time and wording of the failure. Save a console-log excerpt beginning several lines before the first error. Copy configuration files for reference, but remove RCON passwords and other secrets before sharing them.
Do not infer health from a process manager showing “running.” Confirm that the process is listening on the intended local ports and that the server has finished loading its content. A clean startup followed by a browser timeout points to a different layer of the system than a startup error naming a missing map.

Update the dedicated server with SteamCMD first
Squad browser visibility problems are specifically associated with stale dedicated-server files. Update before debugging a rotation or firewall rule; otherwise you may spend time fixing a configuration against an obsolete build.
Run the documented app update
- Stop the Squad server so files are not locked or changed while SteamCMD is updating them.
- Open SteamCMD and select a dedicated-server install directory. The documented Squad app ID is
403240. - Run:
steamcmd +login anonymous +force_install_dir ./squadserver +app_update 403240 validate +quit- Wait for SteamCMD to report completion, then confirm that the command exited without an update or validation error.
- Start the server with the same launch arguments you recorded. Check the console for the build and for any content or permission error before testing from a client.
Use the equivalent absolute path syntax required by your operating system. Do not run the update in a different directory from the one your service actually launches; that creates a convincing “successful update” while the live server continues using old files.
When an update does not solve visibility
Keep the updated build in place and move to the network path. A current build cannot overcome a missing port-forward, a host firewall drop, or carrier-grade NAT. Conversely, opening every port will not repair an outdated installation.
Make the network path consistent end to end
Every port must agree in four places: the server’s launch arguments and configuration, the host firewall, the router’s forwarding rule, and any RCON or monitoring tool. A mismatch can allow discovery while blocking joins, or allow local administration while rejecting remote administration.
Use the current configuration as the authority
Squad installation guidance lists these common defaults. They are operational defaults, not performance measurements; confirm them against the current release and your launch command before opening ports.

The table contains overlapping ecosystems, not a requirement to expose every number. If your launch arguments set a non-default game, query, beacon, or RCON port, use those values consistently instead of blindly applying a generic list.
Forward the ports to the correct machine
- Give the server host a stable LAN address, either with a DHCP reservation or a fixed address that does not change after reboot.
- On the router, create forwarding rules for each configured port and protocol to that LAN address. A rule aimed at yesterday’s address silently sends traffic to the wrong device.
- On the host operating system, create matching inbound firewall rules. Allowing the executable in one profile while the active network is using another can still block traffic.
- Restart the server and confirm locally that it is listening on the intended ports. A router rule cannot help if the process is bound to a different port or interface.
- Test from a network outside the hosting LAN, such as a phone hotspot. A test from the same LAN can succeed through local routing even when Internet clients are blocked.
Recognize carrier-grade NAT
If the router’s WAN address is private or supplied through carrier-grade NAT, you may be unable to accept IPv4 connections even with correct local forwarding. Compare the router’s reported WAN address with the public address seen by a device outside the network. When an upstream provider controls the shared address, request a public address or use a host with a routable address; repeatedly editing local rules will not remove that upstream block.
Separate discovery from joining
A browser listing depends on query and beacon traffic, while an actual session also needs game traffic. If the server appears but joining times out, compare the advertised query port and the game port separately. If neither listing nor direct reachability works, start with the update, WAN address, forwarding, and host firewall rather than map rotation.
Validate the configuration files and content
The installation documentation identifies Server.cfg, LayerRotation.cfg, LevelRotation.cfg, Rcon.cfg, Admins.cfg, and ExcludedLayers.cfg as relevant files. Treat them as separate checks: a valid server identity does not prove that a rotation entry is valid, and a working rotation does not prove that RCON authorization is correct.
Check syntax and names character by character
- Compare every level and layer name with the content installed on the server. Check spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and separators; do not rely on a name copied from a different build.
- Inspect commas, brackets, quotation marks, and line endings in rotation files. One malformed line can produce an empty rotation or cause the server to skip later entries.
- Review
ExcludedLayers.cfgwhen a layer appears in a rotation file but never loads. Remove the exclusion temporarily only if that layer is intended and the required content exists. - Confirm that the server is reading the files in the directory used by the live service. Editing a template or an old installation leaves the running instance unchanged.
Isolate a bad rotation
- Back up the current rotation and exclusion files.
- Replace the active rotation temporarily with one known-good base layer from the installed content.
- Start the server and watch the console through map load and player connection.
- If the base layer works, reintroduce the original entries one at a time until the failing name or syntax is identified.
- Restore the intended rotation, correcting the offending entry rather than permanently deleting unrelated maps.
This method distinguishes a content problem from a network problem: a server that loads and accepts a known-good base layer has passed a useful local configuration test, even if remote access still needs separate verification.

Diagnose mods and custom layers without guessing
A recently added mod or custom layer that did not load correctly can stop a rotation, crash during map initialization, or leave clients unable to join. First test the base server with the custom content disabled or removed from the active launch arguments. Do not delete mod files before preserving the launch command and logs.
- Record the exact active mod list and the order in which the server loads it.
- Disable one recently changed mod or custom layer, then restart cleanly.
- Test startup, map loading, browser visibility, and a local or remote join.
- If the failure disappears, restore mods one at a time. The first reintroduced change that reproduces the error is your leading cause.
- Check that every client is using content compatible with the server build; a server-side fix cannot make an incompatible client package load.
Do not combine a mod change with a SteamCMD update, port change, and rotation rewrite in the same restart. That removes the comparison needed to identify the fault.
Fix RCON and administrator access
RCON failures have three independent dimensions: the service must be listening and reachable, the password must match, and the connecting SteamID must have administrator permission. Test them in that order.
Confirm transport and password
- Read the active RCON port from
Rcon.cfgand the launch command. Compare it with the router and host-firewall rules; the common installation value is21114, but your configured value wins. - Confirm that the RCON password is non-empty and that the client is using the current value without an accidental trailing space.
- Test from outside the hosting LAN when remote administration is intended. A local connection proves little about Internet reachability.
- Read the server console while connecting. A refused connection, timeout, and authentication failure are different messages and require different fixes.
Confirm authorization
Check the administrator SteamID entry in Admins.cfg and ensure it matches the account being used. A correct password does not grant commands to an unlisted account. Keep the password secret; rotate it immediately if it has appeared in a public screenshot, log upload, or shared configuration.

Handle crashes and unexplained instability
Preserve evidence before attempting a reinstall. Record the build, operating system, launch arguments, active mods, map or layer being loaded, and the first error line in the console. Later errors are often consequences of the first failure.
Use a controlled crash test
- Stop the service and copy the current logs and configuration files, removing secrets from any copy you will share.
- Start once with the same arguments and no newly added mod or custom layer. Note whether the crash occurs before browser registration, during map load, or after a player joins.
- When an appropriate crash investigation requires it, enable the documented
-fullcrashdumpoption and preserve the resulting dump with the matching build number. - Reintroduce one change at a time. A crash that follows a single layer or mod is actionable; a crash after five simultaneous edits is not.
If the process exits without a useful message, check file permissions, available disk space, and whether a second server process is already using the configured ports. These checks support the documented evidence-gathering workflow without replacing it with speculation.

“It worked yesterday, then disappeared”
Run the SteamCMD update and validate the live install directory first. Then compare the server’s current public address and LAN address with the router rule. Automatic address changes, a provider-side WAN change, or a stale build are more likely than a sudden layer typo when no configuration was intentionally edited.
“It is listed, but nobody can join”
Read the actual game and query ports from the launch output, compare them with both forwarding and firewall rules, and test from outside the LAN. A listing proves that some discovery traffic arrived; it does not prove that the game traffic port is open.
“The rotation is empty after adding a map”
Restore a known-good base layer, then inspect the exact new layer name, syntax, installed content, and ExcludedLayers.cfg. Re-add entries individually until the failing item is isolated.

“RCON says the password is wrong”
Check that the tool is pointed at the configured RCON port and reachable address, then verify the password in the active Rcon.cfg. If the console accepts the connection but rejects commands, correct the administrator SteamID rather than changing network rules.

Self-hosting versus managed Squad hosting
Managed hosting is relevant when the persistent blocker is router access, carrier-grade NAT, maintenance time, or monitoring rather than game configuration. It is not an automatic fix for an invalid layer name or an incompatible mod. Compare the operational responsibilities before signing up, and verify current terms and geography because availability and included features change.

Prepare an escalation report that can be acted on
If the server remains broken after the controlled checks, send a compact report through the relevant support channel or official Discord bug-report channel. Include:
- Squad server build and operating system version.
- The complete launch command, with passwords and tokens removed.
- Relevant portions of
Server.cfg, rotation files,Rcon.cfg,Admins.cfg, andExcludedLayers.cfg, again with secrets removed. - The first console error and the surrounding log lines, plus any
-fullcrashdumpidentifier. - Your network topology: host LAN address, router presence, whether the WAN address is public or carrier-grade NAT, and which ports were forwarded.
- Exact reproduction steps: for example, “server starts, appears locally, is absent from an outside browser,” or “base layer loads, custom layer fails at map initialization.”
- The result of an outside-network test and the date and time it was performed.
This information lets support distinguish a stale build, an unreachable network path, malformed content, and an authentication problem without asking you to repeat unrelated changes.
