For most mixed Forge, Fabric, or NeoForge packs through Minecraft 1.21.5, start with FTB Backups 2. It has the widest loader coverage and a mature schedule-and-retention workflow, although it is now in long-term support. Choose FastBack when Git-based incremental snapshots are worth the extra native Git and Git LFS setup. Simple Backups is the low-complexity Forge/NeoForge choice, while Textile Backup is the most feature-rich Fabric-only alternative. FTB Backups 3 is the newer FTB line for Minecraft 1.21.1 and later, but its current project listing is focused on NeoForge and documents restore and delete as singleplayer-only.
For Minecraft hosting alongside these mods, Godlike.Host offers Minecraft Java and modded Minecraft servers with up to three free backups a day, restore options, and a built-in mod installer.

Why the Minecraft version and loader come first
A backup mod is loaded by the same platform as every other server mod. A Forge jar is not automatically interchangeable with a Fabric or NeoForge jar, and a file built for one Minecraft patch can fail even when the loader name looks correct. Before downloading anything, record the server’s exact Minecraft version, loader, and loader build. Then select a mod file that explicitly lists all three.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Use a Forge build on Forge, a Fabric build on Fabric, and a NeoForge build on NeoForge.
- Do not infer support for a newer patch from a project’s general description. FTB Backups 2, for example, is available only through Minecraft 1.21.5 and is now in long-term support.
- FTB Backups 3 advertises Minecraft 1.21.1 and later, but the current listing shows NeoForge releases. Treat Forge or Fabric support as unconfirmed until a matching file is listed.
- The Simple Backup (spoorn) repository is less version-specific than the Modrinth and CurseForge listings for the other projects, so verify its release metadata before deployment.
Install only one backup mod that controls the same schedule unless you deliberately want two independent copies. Running overlapping jobs can increase disk and CPU pressure and makes it harder to identify which archive is known-good.

FTB Backups 2: the broadest established choice
FTB Backups 2 is the safest starting point for a pack that may move between Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge. The project provides builds for all three loaders and includes the controls server administrators normally expect: configurable timers, retention, extra directories, JSON metadata, and disk-space checks. CurseForge reported 30,449,365 downloads in 2025, a useful indicator of how widely the project has been used, not a guarantee that every release matches your pack.
Its important limitation is lifecycle. The FTB project notice says, “FTB Backups (2) is only available for Minecraft version up to 1.21.5 and is now on LTS.” Long-term support means it remains a practical choice for supported versions, but you should not expect it to become the path for new Minecraft releases indefinitely.
What its controls are good for
- Timers: schedule regular snapshots instead of relying on an administrator to remember a command.
- Retention: cap the number of archives so a busy world cannot consume the entire volume.
- Extra directories: include selected files outside the main world when your pack stores important data elsewhere.
- JSON metadata: leave machine-readable information alongside a backup, which helps identify when and how it was made.
- Disk-space checks: refuse or manage a job when the destination is too full, reducing the chance that a backup fills the server volume.
Choose FTB Backups 2 when compatibility and a conventional workflow matter more than cutting every repeated byte. It is also the sensible baseline for a Forge-and-Fabric community that wants the same operational model on both loaders.

FTB Backups 3: newer FTB workflow, narrower verified server coverage
FTB Backups 3 is described as a simple but powerful solution for Minecraft 1.21.1 and later. Its documented features include an in-game progress display, command-triggered backups, configurable timing, and a ZIP plug-in system. Those additions make it attractive on a current NeoForge server where players need visible feedback during a long archive job.
The qualification is critical: the current project listing shows NeoForge releases. Do not install it on Forge or Fabric merely because the description says 1.21.1+. Confirm that a file exists for your loader and exact patch.
Restore limitation
FTB Backups 3 documents restore and delete as singleplayer-only operations. That means you should not promise a one-command rollback for a dedicated server. If server-side recovery is a requirement, select a tool with a tested server restore path or plan a manual file-level restore and test it before the world matters.

- COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed
FTB Backups 3 is therefore a good evaluation candidate for current NeoForge servers that mainly need scheduled creation and can handle restoration administratively. It is not the default answer for a Fabric or Forge server, and it is not a substitute for a tested disaster-recovery procedure.
FastBack: incremental Git snapshots for storage efficiency
FastBack describes itself as fast, incremental Minecraft world backups powered by Git. Instead of creating a completely independent copy of every world component on every run, it records changed world parts in each snapshot. A world with many repeated files can therefore keep a longer history without consuming the same space as a stack of full archives, although the actual saving depends on how much the world changes.
FastBack supports Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge, making it the strongest cross-loader alternative to FTB Backups 2 when incremental history is more valuable than the simplest installation.
Required software
The usage guide states that FastBack requires native Git and Git LFS installed on the server. These are external runtime dependencies, not optional extras hidden inside the mod jar. Install and verify both before starting the server, and make sure the service account that runs Minecraft can execute them and write to the backup repository.
Trade-offs
- Lower duplication: unchanged parts are not recopied into every snapshot.
- More administration: Git and Git LFS add packages, permissions, and another failure point to monitor.
- Different recovery model: staff must understand how to select and materialize a Git snapshot rather than simply unpacking the newest ZIP.
- Repository health matters: protect the repository and its LFS objects as carefully as you would protect ordinary archive files.
Select FastBack when you have command-line access, are comfortable maintaining Git tooling, and want a detailed incremental history. If a volunteer moderator must be able to recover a world with minimal training, a conventional archive mod is usually easier to operate.

Simple Backups is intentionally narrow: it creates scheduled backups, lets administrators define how many files and how much storage to keep, and deletes the oldest files when those limits are reached. It runs server-side and provides the manual command /simplebackups backup start, useful before a risky mod update, world edit, or maintenance window.

This design avoids the dependency footprint of FastBack and the broader feature set of FTB Backups. It is a good fit when the requirement is simply “make archives on a schedule and do not let them grow without limit.”
Where it fits
- Use it on Forge or NeoForge after confirming that the downloaded jar matches your exact Minecraft release.
- Set both a count limit and a storage limit; either one alone can leave an unexpected gap in your history.
- Run the manual command before changing configuration or updating mods, then verify that a new file appears in the destination.
Simple Backups does not remove the need for off-server copies. Its pruning policy protects local capacity, not against a failed disk, corrupted host, or accidental deletion of the entire server directory.
Textile Backup: the feature-rich Fabric-only option
Textile Backup is a Fabric server-side utility that automatically zips worlds and can restore them later. It supports multithreaded compression and multiple compression formats, allowing an administrator to balance CPU time against archive size for the hardware available.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRetention and access controls
Its deletion rules can be based on age, number of backups, or total size. Those independent criteria are useful when a server needs, for example, a minimum number of recent points but also has a hard disk quota. Configurable access controls let an administrator decide who can invoke backup-related actions rather than exposing every operation to all players.
Restore behavior
Textile Backup requires a server restart for restore. Schedule that restart, stop writes cleanly, and warn players before replacing a world. A restart requirement is not a defect; it prevents files from being changed while they are being overwritten, but it means restore cannot be treated as an instant in-game undo.
Choose Textile Backup for a Fabric-only server where compression choice, multiple pruning rules, and controlled access matter. Choose FastBack instead when incremental Git history is the priority.

Simple Backup (spoorn): asynchronous jobs with an idle-server option
The Simple Backup project by spoorn documents configurable intervals, asynchronous backup work, and an option to pause backups when no players are online. It can write ZIP or tar.lz4 output, enforce retention limits, and apply disk-space guards.
Asynchronous operation can reduce the amount of time the main server thread is occupied, but it does not make a backup free: compression still consumes CPU and storage I/O. The pause-when-empty option is useful for a private server that is inactive overnight, while a public server may prefer a fixed schedule so that an empty period does not accidentally create a long gap.
Because the repository page is less explicit about Minecraft release coverage than the other listings, verify the exact game version and loader before installing. Treat this project as an option to evaluate, not as a universal cross-version recommendation.
Comparison by the decisions administrators actually make
| Decision | Best starting point | Why | Important caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Forge and Fabric in the same support policy through 1.21.5 | FTB Backups 2 | Builds exist for Forge, Fabric, and NeoForge with mature scheduling and retention | It is LTS and does not cover versions newer than 1.21.5 |
| Current NeoForge 1.21.1+ server | Evaluate FTB Backups 3 | Newer FTB line with progress display and command-triggered backups | Current listing is NeoForge-focused; restore/delete are documented as singleplayer-only |
| Longest history on limited local storage | FastBack | Incremental Git snapshots save changed world parts | Native Git and Git LFS must be installed and maintained |
| Minimal setup on Forge or NeoForge | Simple Backups | Scheduled jobs, count and storage limits, and a manual command | Less elaborate than tools with advanced compression or incremental history |
| Fabric with detailed pruning rules | Textile Backup | Age, number, and size deletion criteria plus compression choices | Restore requires a server restart |
| Backups should pause when nobody is online | Simple Backup (spoorn) | Documents an idle-server pause and asynchronous jobs | Confirm exact release support before deployment |
Installation and first-run checklist
The exact configuration file names and in-game commands vary by project, but the deployment sequence is the same. Perform it on a test copy before changing a live world.
- Identify the target: write down the Minecraft version, loader, loader build, world directory, and the operating-system account that runs the server.
- Choose a matching release: download the file whose metadata names that loader and Minecraft patch. Never rely solely on a project’s headline version.
- Stop the server: shut it down cleanly so region files and player data are not being written while the mod is installed.
- Install dependencies first: for FastBack, install native Git and Git LFS and test them as the server account.
- Place the mod: put the jar in the server’s
modsdirectory, alongside the other server-side mods required by that loader. - Start once: let the server create its configuration, then stop it again if the project requires configuration edits before a backup can run.
- Set a destination and limits: choose a path with known free space, define schedule and retention, and include extra directories only when they contain data you can restore.
- Run a manual test: use the project’s documented command where available; Simple Backups, for example, uses
/simplebackups backup start. - Inspect the result: confirm the archive or snapshot has a recent timestamp, contains the expected world data, and did not trigger an out-of-space or permission error.
- Practice recovery: restore to a disposable copy of the server before allowing players to depend on the schedule.
Designing retention that survives real mistakes
Retention is a recovery decision, not just a disk setting. A single newest archive protects against a failed save but not against discovering corruption several days later. Keep several points across the period in which administrators normally notice problems, and make the limit explicit enough that the disk cannot silently reach 100 percent.
- Use both a maximum count and a maximum size when the mod supports both.
- Keep at least one copy from before major mod, loader, or world-generation changes.
- Do not place every retained copy on the same physical volume as the live world.
- Watch the backup directory after a week of normal activity; the first estimate made on a quiet test world may be misleading.
- For FastBack, monitor repository and Git LFS growth rather than looking only for individual ZIP files.
Compression saves space at the cost of CPU and I/O. Multithreaded compression can finish sooner on a machine with spare cores, but it may compete with tick processing. Schedule large jobs during low activity, and watch server timing rather than assuming that an asynchronous or multithreaded label makes the work unnoticeable.

How to test and perform a restore
A backup that has never been restored is an unverified hope. Test on a copy of the server, never on the only live world.
- Stop the test server cleanly. Preserve the current test copy so you can compare before and after.
- Record the mod and loader versions. A world may depend on the same mod set that created it; keep that set available for the test.
- Choose an older backup. Selecting a non-newest point proves that retention actually preserved history.
- Restore into a separate directory. Do not overwrite the production world while learning the workflow.
- Start and inspect. Check spawn, player inventories, dimensions, claims, machines, and the latest known builds. Look for loader or mod errors in the log.
- Document the procedure. Write down the exact stop, copy, extraction or snapshot-selection, and startup steps so another administrator can repeat them.
Mod-specific cautions
- FTB Backups 3: its documentation describes restore and delete as singleplayer-only, so plan a manual server-side replacement or select another tool if one-click dedicated-server rollback is mandatory.
- Textile Backup: restore requires a server restart; announce downtime and make a safety copy of the current world before replacing it.
- FastBack: verify that Git and Git LFS objects are present and accessible before attempting to materialize a snapshot.
- Archive-based tools: never extract over a running world. Stop the server first and retain the pre-restore directory until the recovered world has been checked.
Keeping a backup after the server fails
Every mod listed here writes backups under the administrator’s control; none of the project descriptions establishes a complete off-site backup service. A second location is therefore your responsibility. Copy completed archives or snapshot repositories to storage that is not the same disk, host, or failure domain as the Minecraft server, and restrict write access so a compromised server cannot erase every copy.
Replication should happen after a backup completes, not while a large archive is still being written. Keep enough history at the second location to cover delayed discovery of corruption, and periodically verify that the copied files can be read. An off-server copy that has never been checked can still fail when you need it.
Troubleshooting common failures
The server refuses to start after installation
Remove the new jar, read the loader error, and confirm Minecraft version, loader, and dependency requirements. A Forge file on Fabric or a build for a different patch is the usual cause. Reinstall only after the metadata matches.
No backup is created on schedule
Check that the server process can write to the destination, that the schedule is enabled, and that the disk-space guard has not blocked the job. Trigger a manual run where the mod supports one, then inspect the log for the first permission, path, or storage error rather than the final cascade of messages.
The backup directory fills the disk
Set a count and size limit, remove only archives you have confirmed are replicated elsewhere, and leave free space for the live world and operating system. FastBack users should inspect Git and Git LFS storage, not just visible snapshot names.
Players experience lag during a backup
Move the schedule to a quieter period, reduce compression pressure where the mod allows it, or use an incremental approach such as FastBack. Measure actual tick impact on your hardware; labels such as asynchronous do not guarantee zero contention.
Recommended Free Tools
A restore produces missing blocks or mod errors
Restore with the same Minecraft version, loader, and mod set that created the snapshot. Confirm that all extra directories and metadata required by the pack were included. If the test world is healthy but production is not, compare file permissions and paths before attempting another replacement.
Quick Recap
Final recommendations by scenario
- Forge and Fabric pack through Minecraft 1.21.5: choose FTB Backups 2 first. Compare FastBack only if Git-based incremental history justifies installing and maintaining Git and Git LFS.
- Current NeoForge 1.21.1 or newer: evaluate FTB Backups 3 after confirming the exact release, but do not depend on its documented singleplayer restore for dedicated-server recovery.
- Simple Forge or NeoForge server: use Simple Backups for scheduled retention and the
/simplebackups backup startmanual trigger. - Fabric server needing compression and granular pruning: use Textile Backup, with a planned restart for every restore.
- Server that should pause work while empty: consider Simple Backup (spoorn), after checking its release compatibility.
- Any loader: test a restore, cap local retention, and maintain a second storage location. A mod automates file creation; it does not by itself provide disaster recovery.
