The fastest way to start modding Hytale is to make a small Asset Pack in the in-game Asset Editor, test it in a disposable local world, and only move to Java when you need server-side logic. Hytale mods run on the host rather than as client-side additions, so the world or server owner installs the pack or plugin and players connect with a normal game client.

Hytale is still in Early Access. The official documentation is currently labeled release 0.7.2, tools and APIs can change, and the safest workflow is to keep backups, match client and server protocol versions exactly, and verify examples against the current documentation before distributing anything.

What Hytale modding is and why the host matters

Hytale’s official documentation hub covers running servers and building mods. It includes a creating-content guide, a Hytale Generator reference, Java API documentation for plugin developers, and an Asset Reference generated from the server’s codecs. The hub currently identifies its documentation release as 0.7.2, so labels and examples should be checked against that release or the patchline you are actually running.

Hypixel Studios describes Hytale’s model this way: “All modding in Hytale is based on the host of the server or host of the game.” The studio has also said it does not intend to support client mods. In practice, a host loads the content, configuration or code; connecting players do not maintain a separate modded client for every server. That is the first important difference from games built around client-side mod loaders.

  • Single-player or locally hosted world: your game instance is the host, so it loads the pack or mod from its own files.
  • Dedicated server: the server operator installs and updates the pack or plugin. The operator is responsible for compatibility and backups.
  • Connecting player: use the ordinary game client and connect to a host whose content is compatible with the client version.

This host-side design does not make every mod identical. An Asset Pack changes data and assets. A Java plugin runs server logic through Hytale’s API. Both are installed on the host, but they require different skills, testing and maintenance.

Asset Pack or Java plugin?

Choose the smallest technology that can express the feature you want. Asset Packs are the accessible starting point because the in-game Asset Editor creates the required structure. Plugins are appropriate when the feature needs commands, events, systems or behavior that asset configuration cannot provide.

Decision point Asset Pack Java plugin Early Plugin
Required skill Asset Editor and structured asset files; basic JSON and folder awareness help. Java, build tooling and Hytale’s Java API. Advanced Java and low-level runtime or class-transformation knowledge.
Typical scope New or replacement assets, content definitions and configuration. Server-side logic, commands, events, systems and behavior. Low-level transformations outside the standard plugin environment.
Installation A folder or ZIP containing a typical manifest.json, placed in a host mods location. A plugin artifact installed on the host server in the arrangement required by the current server documentation. Host-side installation with substantially greater compatibility risk.
Debugging burden Usually limited to manifest, path, asset-reference and content conflicts. Includes Java build errors, API changes, runtime behavior and server compatibility. Highest; changes can break assumptions below the normal plugin API.
Update sensitivity Asset schemas and references can change between Early Access releases. API, server dependency and protocol changes can require a rebuild. Particularly sensitive to internal changes.
Best first project? Yes. Make one small change and learn the loading cycle. Only when an Asset Pack cannot express the requirement. No. Treat it as an exceptional escape hatch.

Use an Asset Pack when the change is data or presentation

Choose a pack for a new asset, a replacement definition, or a configuration-driven content change. The official guide describes packs as ZIP files or folders containing a custom set of assets. A pack typically includes manifest.json. Assets in a pack can override base-game assets, and a pack can also add new assets.

Use a Java plugin when the server must do something

Choose a plugin for a command, event reaction, rule, scheduled system or other behavior that cannot be represented by asset data. CurseForge defines Hytale plugins as mods written in Java that use the game API to extend vanilla functionality and add content. The official documentation exposes a Java API for this work.

Leave Early Plugins for specialist cases

CurseForge also identifies Early Plugins. They operate outside the standard plugin environment and perform low-level class transformations. That is not a faster route to a first mod: it increases breakage and update risk and should be considered only when the normal API cannot support a well-justified requirement.

Build your first Asset Pack

The in-game Asset Editor is the recommended beginner route because it creates the manifest and folder layout Hytale expects. Starting with a hand-built directory can work, but a misplaced file or malformed manifest makes a first project unnecessarily difficult to diagnose.

1. Create the pack in the Asset Editor

  1. Open Hytale and launch the in-game Asset Editor.
  2. Create a new Asset Pack rather than editing the base files directly.
  3. Give the pack a clear group, name, version, description and author. These values belong in manifest.json and make the pack identifiable when you return to it or distribute it.

Use a name that describes the project rather than a temporary filename. Keep the first version narrow: one replacement or one new asset gives you a clean test of loading before you add more variables.

2. Add one asset at a time

Make a single change, save it, and test it before adding another. This isolates asset-reference mistakes and makes it obvious which change caused a failure. Because packs can override base-game assets, an accidental name collision may change an existing asset instead of creating a visibly separate item. Decide deliberately whether you are overriding a base asset or introducing a new one.

3. Save it in the correct host location

The official guide documents both a user-wide Mods folder and a per-world folder on Windows:

  • User-wide location, for a pack that should be available to other worlds: C:Users<user>AppDataRoamingHytaleUserDataMods
  • Per-world location, for a pack used only by one save: a path such as ...SavesNew World 5mods

The editor can save the pack in the world’s mods folder. Copy it to the user Mods folder when you need it available in other worlds. Keep a working copy outside the game’s generated folders as well, so an update or cleanup does not become your only backup.

4. Enable it for a test world

  1. Create or open a disposable world.
  2. From the New World menu, open the Options area.
  3. Enable the Asset Pack.
  4. Load the world and verify the exact change you made.

Use a disposable world for early experiments. A malformed asset or an Early Access crash should not endanger a long-running survival save or an important creation.

5. Confirm what other players need

Only the server or world host has to download Asset Packs and Mods. If another player is joining your hosted world, they do not install a separate client mod for that world. For a dedicated server, the operator must put the pack in the server’s host-side mod layout and test it before inviting players.

Asset Pack troubleshooting

  • The pack does not appear: check that it is in the intended user or world mods folder, that the pack contains manifest.json, and that it is enabled under the New World menu’s Options area.
  • The wrong asset changes: look for an unintended override or name collision. Remove extra changes and test the intended asset alone.
  • The pack works in one save but not another: it may be stored in that world’s mods folder rather than the user-wide location. Copy it to the user Mods folder if it must be shared across worlds.
  • A later change becomes impossible to diagnose: restore the last known-good copy, then reapply one asset change at a time.

Move to Java only when logic requires it

A plugin is the right next step when the game must respond to an event, expose a command, maintain a system or enforce behavior. Do not begin with Java merely because it sounds more powerful; an Asset Pack has a smaller feedback loop and fewer moving parts.

Set up the project against the current server API

The Hytale Server Manual documents a Maven dependency named com.hypixel.hytale:Server and says the HytaleServer JAR will be published to a Maven repository for modding projects. The exact version and repository are release-sensitive. Use the values shown in the current manual for your target patchline instead of copying an old tutorial’s coordinates.

Build a minimal plugin first: load it on a test server, make one observable behavior, and then add features. Keep the source and build files in version control so you can rebuild when the server API changes. A Java plugin has more failure points than a pack: Java compilation, dependency resolution, API compatibility, runtime behavior and server configuration all need to be checked separately.

Test the plugin on a dedicated server

A local world is useful for Asset Packs, but a dedicated server is the meaningful test environment for server logic. Install the plugin on a non-production server, connect with a matching client, and verify startup, the intended command or event, and a clean shutdown. Do not use a valuable live world as the first place you discover an API or runtime problem.

Set up a Hytale test server

The current server manual gives three ways to obtain server files:

  • Copy the server files supplied through the launcher.
  • Use the authenticated Hytale Downloader CLI.
  • Bootstrap from HytaleServer.jar.

The downloader can fetch the latest release, print its version, select the pre-release patchline and write files to a specified path. The correct choice depends on how you manage versions, but record the patchline so the client and server can be kept aligned.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bootstrap sequence from HytaleServer.jar

  1. Place HytaleServer.jar in an empty directory.
  2. Run java -jar HytaleServer.jar --bootstrap.
  3. At the server prompt, authenticate with /auth login device.
  4. Run /update setup or /update download to obtain the server content.

The resulting layout includes Assets.zip, launcher scripts and a Server directory. That directory contains HytaleServer.jar and configuration files. Keep the expected layout intact: the manual’s automatic-update process is designed to preserve configuration, saves and mods when files are in the documented locations.

Match the protocol version exactly

The server manual is explicit: “Client and server must be on the exact same protocol version.” A server that is merely close to the client version is not sufficient. Before debugging a mod, confirm that both sides are on the same release or pre-release patchline. Otherwise a connection or behavior failure may have nothing to do with your pack or plugin.

Plan updates and rollback

Automatic updates can preserve configuration, saves and mods when the expected folder layout is used, but preservation is not a substitute for a backup. Copy saves, important creations, pack source and plugin build artifacts before an update. If a new release changes an asset schema or API, you need a known-good version to restore while you adapt the project.

A reliable development loop

Use a repeatable loop rather than changing several systems at once:

  1. Write down the smallest behavior or asset change you want.
  2. Back up the world and keep a copy of the current working pack or plugin.
  3. Change one file or one asset.
  4. Start the appropriate local world or dedicated test server with the matching version.
  5. Verify the intended result and check for unrelated changes.
  6. Record the version and keep the last known-good build before starting the next change.

For Asset Packs, first test in the world where the pack is stored, then copy it to the user-wide Mods folder and test a second world if cross-world availability is part of the goal. For plugins, repeat the test after rebuilding against a changed server dependency; a successful compile alone does not prove runtime compatibility.

When a failure appears, reduce the test case. Remove newly added assets, return to the last working plugin artifact, or move the suspect pack out of the host’s mods folder temporarily. Reintroduce changes one at a time. This is especially important in Early Access, where rough or inconsistent tools can make a broad change set difficult to interpret.

Publish and distribute through CurseForge

CurseForge’s Hytale FAQ says creators make mods with the in-game Asset Editor and submit them to CurseForge for moderation after signing in. Users can discover, install and update Hytale mods through the CurseForge website and application. The FAQ currently says Hytale mod support is for PC.

Prepare the release

  • Test the exact pack or plugin build you intend to upload.
  • Set a clear name, version, description and author in the pack manifest where applicable.
  • State the Hytale release or patchline you tested against and identify whether the project is an Asset Pack or Java plugin.
  • Include installation and compatibility notes that tell a host where the files belong and whether a dedicated server is required.
  • Keep the source and a known-good backup outside the upload archive.

Submit for moderation

  1. Sign in to CurseForge.
  2. Create or select the Hytale project entry for the mod.
  3. Upload the tested release in the format accepted for that project.
  4. Provide the description, version and compatibility information.
  5. Submit it for moderation and wait for approval before treating it as a public release.

CurseForge reports more than 178,000 modders and over 26 million monthly users in 2026. Those are platform-reported audience figures, not an independent measurement of Hytale’s total modding market or a guarantee that a particular project will receive downloads.

Maintain published versions

Publish a new file when the project has been retested against a new Hytale release, and explain whether an update is required for hosts. Do not silently replace a working build with one that targets a different protocol or server API. A concise compatibility note saves hosts from mistaking an expected version mismatch for a broken mod.

Private-server commerce is separate from a mod upload

CurseForge’s Hytale information says Tebex is partnering with Hytale to power private-server stores that can sell tiers, roles, cosmetics and similar offerings. Treat that as a separate server-business decision, not a requirement for publishing a mod. Fees, geography, eligibility and terms can change, so verify the current conditions before making a commercial plan.

Early Access limitations and safety

Hypixel Studios has said it is behind its desired modding state, with gaps in tools, documentation and exposed systems. It warns that some tools are rough or inconsistent and that maturity varies widely by project type. A workflow that works for an Asset Pack may not yet translate cleanly to every server system or plugin use case.

The studio also reports crashes that can cause data loss and advises: “Take frequent backups of your savegames and important creations.” Follow that advice before testing experimental packs, plugins or server updates. Keep at least one untouched copy of important saves and creations, and use disposable worlds while learning.

CurseForge’s support article, modified February 9, 2026, warns that its tutorials may contain outdated or incomplete information because Hytale is in Early Access. Check the current official documentation and the target release patchline before using a code example, Maven coordinate, command or installation instruction found in an older guide.

A practical first-project checklist

  • Read the current Hytale documentation hub and note the release label, currently 0.7.2.
  • Decide whether the feature is asset data or server behavior.
  • Create an Asset Pack in the in-game Asset Editor for a first project.
  • Set the manifest’s group, name, version, description and author.
  • Make one change and save it in the world mods folder or the user-wide Mods folder as appropriate.
  • Enable it from New World > Options and test in a disposable world.
  • Move to a Java plugin only when commands, events, systems or other server logic are required.
  • Use the current server manual for the com.hypixel.hytale:Server dependency and repository.
  • Test plugins on a dedicated server with a client on the exact same protocol version.
  • Back up saves, creations and working builds before updates or experiments.
  • Submit a tested release to CurseForge for moderation, with its Hytale version and host-side installation notes.

For most beginners, that sequence keeps the first win small and reversible: one Asset Pack, one local test, then a dedicated-server plugin only when the design genuinely needs code.
