For an awards-backed place to start, try Pokémon TCG Pocket: Apple named it iPhone Game of the Year, and Google Play named it Best Game of 2025. For a different fit, Google Play’s picks include Disney Speedstorm for cross-device play, Dunk City Dynasty for multiplayer, and Candy Crush Solitaire for quick sessions. These are storefront award selections, not the result of hands-on testing, and they do not establish that a game is free or available on every device.
Best mobile games in 2025, by the way you play
There is no single best mobile game for every player. The following shortlist uses Apple’s 2025 App Store Awards and Google Play’s 2025 awards as useful editorial signals. Apple’s selections cover iPhone, iPad, and Apple Arcade; Google Play’s cited awards are U.S.-specific. Check your local store listing for availability, price, age rating, and device compatibility before downloading.

What “free” and “paid” mean in mobile game charts
Apple publishes separate U.S. Top Free Games and Top Paid Games charts for 2025. The labels describe the games’ placement in separate storefront charts; they are not quality rankings, and “free” does not mean every feature or item is free. Store pricing and purchase models can vary by region and change over time.
Do not assume a recommendation is a paid game simply because it is an award winner, described as premium, or available through a subscription. The available paid-chart information does not establish a specific paid pick and current price here. For a paid download, check the live listing in your local store and confirm its one-time price or other purchase model before buying.

How to choose the right game for your phone or tablet
Start with your preferred play style
Choose multiplayer, short sessions, a story, indie discovery, or cross-device play before comparing award labels. The Google Play categories map to those different needs, but a category award is a starting point rather than a guarantee you will enjoy the game.
Check the purchase model
Look for the current store’s labels for ads, in-app purchases, random items, or subscription access. Among these picks, Pokémon TCG Pocket has in-app purchases and random items, Candy Crush Solitaire has ads and in-app purchases, and What the Clash? is an Apple Arcade title. Store labels and availability can change.

Match the game to your device and region
Apple’s awards span iPhone, iPad, and Arcade, while Google Play’s selections are relevant to Android. An award in one category does not prove that a title runs on every device in that platform family. Apple warns that some award titles may not be available in every region or on all devices, and restrictions or age ratings can affect visibility. Confirm the exact listing for your hardware and location.

Consider a controller only if the game supports it
A compatible controller is optional, not a requirement for mobile gaming. Apple says its Games app works with compatible controllers, but only select games support them and regional availability can vary. Check the specific game listing and whether the controller fits your phone and connection setup before purchasing one.
