Sony says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. Its current support guidance does not establish native PS2 game compatibility, so check the specific title rather than assuming it will run. For PS4 discs, you need a PS5 model with a disc drive.
PS5 compatibility by PlayStation generation
| Generation | What Sony’s guidance says | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| PS2 | Sony’s current PS5 support material does not establish native PS2 game compatibility. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance does not provide a PS2 compatibility catalog. | Verify whether the specific game is available in a version supported on PS5; do not assume a PS2 disc or purchase will work. |
| PS3 | PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs, according to Sony’s support page. | Inserting a PS3 disc will not make it playable. |
| PS4 | Sony says the overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games can be played on PS5, with exceptions and possible differences in functionality or behavior. Check Sony’s current compatibility guidance for its PS4-only list. | Check the individual game’s compatibility and whether you own it on disc or digitally. |
Can you play PS4 games on PS5?
Generally, yes. Sony says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games are playable on PS5. Compatibility does not guarantee that every game works exactly as it did on PS4: some titles may have missing functions, errors, or unexpected behavior. Sony recommends trying a game on PS5 before purchasing add-ons for it.

PS4 discs
A PS4 disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. Keep the disc inserted whenever you play. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 game discs.

Games with known exceptions
Sony’s support page lists certain PS4 games as playable only on PS4, including Afro Samurai 2: Revenge of Kuma Volume One, Just Deal With It!, Robinson: The Journey, We Sing, Hitman Go: Definitive Edition, and Shadwen. Sony says this list may change; consult the current page before relying on it. The list excludes demos, media, and non-game applications.
Does PS4 backwards compatibility mean you get the PS5 version?
No. Playing a PS4 version on PS5 and upgrading to a separate PS5 version are different things. Only certain PS4 games offer a PS5-version upgrade, and the offer may be free, paid, or time-limited. For a disc-based upgrade, you need a PS5 with a disc drive and must use the disc as required by the game. Check the title’s specific upgrade terms; backwards compatibility alone does not grant an upgrade.

What about performance and PS VR?
Select PS4 games may benefit from PS5 Game Boost, but that does not guarantee a particular improvement or complete feature parity. Sony warns that some games may lose functionality or behave unexpectedly, so check the title and try it before buying add-ons.

For supported PS VR games on PS5, Sony specifies a PS VR headset, a PS4 PlayStation Camera, and a PlayStation Camera adaptor. The PS5 HD Camera is not compatible with PS VR. Sony says the adaptor is available at no cost through its stated process; see PlayStation Camera adaptor support for details.

Why do some sources say “99 percent” of PS4 games work?
That figure comes from Sony’s launch-era statement, not a current independent measurement. On October 9, 2020, Hideaki Nishino, then identified as CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, wrote: “When the PlayStation 5 launches this November, more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5.” See the October 9, 2020 PlayStation Blog statement for its original context. For today’s practical answer, use Sony’s current support guidance, which describes the overwhelming majority as playable and identifies exceptions.
