What matters most when hosting a modded Terraria server
Choosing a host by advertised RAM or the lowest first-month price is risky. A usable tModLoader server depends first on compatibility, then on enough memory and CPU headroom, a nearby location, reliable recovery tools and a management workflow your group can actually maintain.
Match the exact tModLoader environment
Before ordering, confirm all of the following:
- The tModLoader branch and Terraria version supported by the plan.
- Whether your intended mods are installed through Steam Workshop, an integrated mod installer, uploaded files or a combination of methods.
- That every player can use the same client version and matching mod list as the server.
- That the plan provides enough disk space for the world, mod files, logs and backups.
Client/server version mismatches and different mod versions are common causes of failed connections. A host that supports “modded Terraria” in general may still be unsuitable for a particular Calamity or large-content pack if it does not support the required tModLoader branch or installation workflow.

Use RAM as a sizing input, not a promise of performance
Indicative deployment guidance suggests about 2 GB for a small, lightly modded world, 4 GB or more for a moderate mod list, and 6–8 GB for Calamity-scale packs with several players. These are operational ranges rather than controlled benchmarks. Actual demand varies with the number and type of mods, world activity, player count, save size and the host’s CPU and storage environment.
Leave headroom rather than sizing to the minimum. If the server reaches its memory limit while generating terrain, loading a large mod list or saving the world, players may see lag, disconnects or crashes. A larger plan cannot compensate for an incompatible mod set or a distant data center, but an undersized plan can make every other optimization irrelevant.
Managed hosting and VPS hosting solve different problems
A managed game host normally supplies a control panel, an installer, backups, update controls, file access and support. You trade some operating-system control for a faster setup and less routine maintenance.
Recommended Free Tools
A VPS gives you administrator-level control over the operating system, runtime, firewall, ports, scheduled jobs and files. It also makes you responsible for patching, security, monitoring, backups, restore testing and troubleshooting. A VPS is not automatically faster; its value is control and flexibility.

BisectHosting: documented Terraria and mod-loader support
BisectHosting is a managed option when your priority is getting a private modded world online without taking on server administration. The cited 2026 comparison highlights Terraria-specific documentation alongside support for vanilla Terraria, tModLoader and TShock. It also lists automated updates, three days of free backups, 21 advertised locations and 24/7 support.
An October 13, 2026 plan snapshot lists 2 GB at $5.99 per month and 4 GB at $11.99 per month. Those figures are dated examples, not guaranteed current or renewal prices. Confirm the currency, tax, promotional period, renewal amount, selected location, backup retention and restore procedure at checkout.
Choose the 2 GB example only for a small, lightly modded world with a modest number of players. A 4 GB plan gives more practical room for a moderate list, while a Calamity-scale pack may call for 6–8 GB or more depending on player activity and the rest of the server’s resource profile.

Shockbyte is the most clearly budget-positioned managed option in the comparison. The cited Australia-region example advertises a 4 GB, 12-player modded tier at A$14.35 per month, with tModLoader/TShock support, automatic backups and updates, DDoS protection, 24/7 support and a 72-hour self-service refund.

Do not compare A$14.35 directly with a US-dollar plan. Region, currency, tax, introductory pricing and renewal terms can change the real cost. Check whether the selected location is close enough to your players and whether the 12-player figure is a hard plan limit or simply the advertised configuration.
Shockbyte is a sensible shortlist choice when a managed workflow and a clearly advertised modded tier matter more than a broad set of advanced controls. Verify the exact tModLoader version and how mod files are installed before importing a large pack.
Nodecraft: convenient panels and edition switching
Nodecraft is aimed at convenience. The cited listing advertises Terraria PC and mobile support, edition switching, tModLoader and TShock installation, and player slots not limited beyond the game’s own limits. Its cited starting configuration is US$4.17 per month.
A starting price does not establish the final memory allocation, CPU performance, storage, location, renewal cost or suitability for a demanding mod list. Treat the figure as an entry point, then select a configuration based on your modpack and player count.

Nodecraft is most attractive when your group values an approachable control panel or expects to switch between Terraria editions. Before paying, confirm whether switching changes the installed files or world format and make a backup before any edition change.
Game Host Bros: a specialist candidate for larger modpacks
Game Host Bros is identified as a specialist alternative for heavier modpacks. The available April 2026 snapshot reports tModLoader support, integrated mod installation and guides for popular experiences such as Calamity and Starlight River.
That specialization can reduce setup friction when your group already knows which pack it wants to run. Current price and hardware specifications were not established in the cited material, so verify CPU allocation, memory tiers, storage, backup retention, locations, support hours and restore steps before selecting it.
Pingperfect: a high-memory directory alternative
A directory snapshot cites Pingperfect with six Terraria slots on 9 GB of RAM for $4.59, plus tModLoader/TShock support, Workshop mods and a 48-hour trial. Because this is a directory snapshot rather than a controlled test, confirm that the same configuration, price, currency, location and trial terms are still offered.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. We recommend carefully checking that your desk and monitors meets all above conditions before purchasing.
- Dual C-Clamp Hold - Worried your dual monitors might wobble or slip? Our upgraded base uses a larger platform plus a dual C-clamp structure to lock the dual monitor arm firmly to your desk. Each arm safely keeps your screens steady while you type, click and game—no shaking, no sliding, just a clean and secure setup you can trust every day. It also provides Grommet Mounting installation choice, both options ensure stable and secure fixation for your 0.59" - 3.54" desk.
- Full-Motion Adjustment For Comfortable View - Pull the screen closer when you’re deep in a spreadsheet, push it back to watch videos, or rotate to portrait for coding — moving everything smoothly with just one hand. The monitor stand offers +85°/-50° tilt, ±90° swivel and 360° rotation. Raise your monitor up to 15.75″ to support a healthy sitting posture. Whether you’re working from home, gaming through the night, or switching between video calls and documents, getting the screens to your natural line of sight helps relieve neck, shoulder and back strain so you can stay focused longer with less fatigue.
- Keep Your Desk Organized: By lifting both screens off the desktop, this dual monitor stand opens up valuable space for your keyboard, notebook, docking station or a simple, clutter-free work area. Built-in cable management guides wires along the arms, keeping cords out of sight and out of the way. Enjoy a tidy, modern workstation that looks as good as it feels to use.
The unusually high memory figure relative to the cited player count may appeal to groups running large content packs, but memory alone does not prove better tick rate, latency or mod performance. Ask what CPU resources are included and whether the advertised RAM is dedicated or shared.
When a VPS is the better choice
A VPS is appropriate when you are comfortable administering Linux or another supported operating system and want control over the complete environment. The tModLoader server requirements call for a 64-bit AMD64 or ARM64 environment, enough memory and disk for the modpack, and compatible client and server versions and mods.
VPS responsibilities you must plan for
- Install and update the operating system, runtime and tModLoader server files.
- Create a non-root service account and apply firewall rules.
- Open and protect the Terraria server port.
- Upload the world and mod files, or establish a repeatable Workshop or file-based deployment.
- Schedule updates and decide how to handle updates that change world or mod compatibility.
- Automate backups to storage separate from the VPS.
- Test restoration, not merely backup creation.
- Monitor memory, CPU, disk space, logs and process health.
The tModLoader server configuration follows Terraria’s model and supports a configuration file or command-line invocation, including port and maximum-player settings. That makes a VPS flexible, but it also means you must document the settings and maintain them yourself.

How much RAM does a modded Terraria server need?
| Server workload | Indicative RAM | Use this as |
|---|---|---|
| Small, lightly modded world | About 2 GB | Starting guidance for a small group and modest mod list. |
| Moderate mod list | 4 GB or more | A practical baseline when several content or quality-of-life mods are active. |
| Calamity-scale pack with several players | 6–8 GB | Indicative headroom guidance, not an official benchmark. |
Monitor actual behavior after launch. Rising memory use, long world saves, garbage-collection pauses, process restarts and disconnects are signals to investigate. Adding RAM may help when the process is memory-bound, but it will not fix a mismatched mod list, a CPU bottleneck, poor storage performance or high network latency.
Compatibility checklist before you order
- Write down the target environment. Record the Terraria version, tModLoader branch, mod names and versions, Workshop collections, world size and expected peak players.
- Check the host’s supported installation path. Confirm whether mods are installed through Workshop, a panel installer, FTP/SFTP or manual file upload.
- Confirm client/server parity. Every player should use the same tModLoader branch and matching mod versions as the server.
- Estimate resource needs. Use the 2 GB, 4 GB-plus and 6–8 GB ranges as starting points, then leave headroom for saves and growth.
- Check storage and file access. Ensure the plan has room for worlds, mods, logs and backups and provides the file access your workflow requires.
- Choose the nearest practical location. A nearby data center generally reduces network distance, but the available material does not provide independent latency measurements.
- Read recovery terms. Confirm backup frequency, retention, whether backups are free, how restoration is requested and whether restoring overwrites the current world.
- Review billing and exit terms. Record currency, taxes, introductory pricing, renewal cost, refund window and trial limitations.
Setting up a managed tModLoader server
- Create the server and select the location. Pick a data center close to the majority of players, then choose memory based on the modpack rather than the minimum advertised price.
- Select the correct Terraria and tModLoader installation. Do not start with a vanilla server and assume the mod loader can be added without changing files or settings.
- Install the mod list. Use the host’s Workshop or integrated installer where available. For manual uploads, preserve the exact file names and versions used by clients.
- Upload or create the world. Keep an untouched local copy before the first migration.
- Configure player and network settings. Set the maximum-player value and server port through the panel or configuration file supported by the host.
- Start with a test group. Have two or three players connect, load the world, travel, use the major mod systems and trigger a save before inviting the full group.
- Make a restore point. Create a backup after the test succeeds and learn the restore workflow while the world is still expendable.
Setting up the same environment on a VPS
- Provision a 64-bit AMD64 or ARM64 VPS. Select enough memory and disk for the modpack, world, logs and local staging files.
- Secure the operating system. Update packages, create a dedicated service account, restrict administrative access and configure a firewall.
- Install the server files. Use the tModLoader server release that matches the clients and the Terraria version you intend to run.
- Deploy mods and the world. Copy the exact mod files and world data, preserving permissions and paths.
- Configure the server. Use the supported configuration file or command-line arguments to set the port and maximum players.
- Create a service and restart policy. Run the process under the dedicated account and configure automatic restart only after diagnosing crashes so a bad update does not loop indefinitely.
- Open only the required network port. Document the port and firewall rule, then test from outside the VPS network.
- Automate and test backups. Store copies away from the VPS and perform a trial restore on a separate directory or instance.
- Document updates. Record the current tModLoader build, mod versions, world backup and rollback procedure before changing anything.
Backups, restores and failure recovery
Backups are valuable only if you know what they contain and can restore them. Compare the retention period, backup frequency, storage separation, manual-backup option and restore interface. A provider advertising backups does not by itself establish how quickly restoration works or whether backups are protected from account-level deletion.
Before a mod or loader update
- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world, configuration and mod list.
- Record the current tModLoader and Terraria versions.
- Update in a maintenance window.
- Test with one player before reopening the server.
If players cannot connect
- Compare the client and server Terraria versions.
- Compare the tModLoader branch and build.
- Compare every mod name and version.
- Check whether the server is listening on the configured port.
- Review logs for a missing dependency or failed mod load.
- Restore the last known-good world and mod set if an update changed compatibility.
If the server crashes or lags
- Check memory and CPU usage during world loading and saves.
- Temporarily remove recently added mods to isolate the fault.
- Confirm free disk space and backup jobs are not filling the volume.
- Test a smaller player group and compare behavior.
- Increase resources only after identifying whether memory, CPU, storage or a mod is the limiting factor.
