Start with an information-architecture audit
A menu cannot compensate for a confusing page structure. Before opening the WordPress editor, establish what visitors are trying to do and which destinations deserve a place in global navigation. Use analytics, support questions, search queries, and stakeholder knowledge to make an inventory of important pages. Include task pages, category or archive pages, contact and support routes, and any destination that visitors repeatedly request.

Remove duplication and obsolete destinations
- Delete links to unpublished, retired, duplicate, or temporary pages.
- Choose one canonical destination when two pages serve the same purpose.
- Check whether a menu item still matches the page title and its current content.
- Open every destination after saving; a menu can look correct while pointing to an old URL.
Group related pages
Put pages that answer the same visitor need under a shared top-level choice. A small site might use sections such as About, Services, Resources, and Contact. A larger site can place related articles, documentation, or product categories in a submenu, but each parent should represent a meaningful grouping rather than a decorative label.
Write labels that describe the destination
Use short, familiar words that tell visitors what they will find after activating the link. “Pricing,” “Support,” and “Game guides” communicate more than vague labels such as “Learn” or “Explore.” Keep labels consistent in grammatical form and capitalization. Do not force a complete sentence into a menu item; put the explanation on the destination page.

Keep the first level manageable
Top-level links compete for attention and horizontal space. Start with the smallest set that covers the site’s main tasks, then add a submenu only when grouping genuinely improves findability. If visitors need a deep page, provide a second route through search, contextual links, a category page, or a page list rather than making one enormous menu.
Identify whether you have a block or classic theme
The editing path depends on the active theme. A block theme exposes the Site Editor and Navigation block. A classic theme may expose Appearance > Menus, along with menu locations defined by that theme. Check the left-hand WordPress dashboard before changing anything; instructions for one theme type do not automatically apply to the other.

| Theme type | Primary editing route | How the menu reaches the front end | What can vary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Block theme | Appearance > Editor > Navigation | A Navigation block in a template part, commonly the Header, is linked to the menu and saved. | Templates, template parts, overlay settings, and the block’s available controls. |
| Classic theme | Appearance > Menus | The menu is assigned to one of the theme’s registered menu locations. | Location names, menu markup, responsive behavior, and styling supplied by the theme. |
In a block theme, creating or editing a menu in the Site Editor does not place it on the public site by itself. A Navigation block must be inserted into the relevant template part, connected to the menu, and saved.
Build and place a menu in a block theme
- Open the Navigation screen. In the dashboard, select Appearance > Editor > Navigation. Select an existing menu to edit it, or create a new one. Give the menu a name that makes its purpose clear if the site has more than one.
- Review the current structure. Reorder items so the most important visitor tasks appear first. Remove obsolete links before adding new choices.
- Add destinations. Add page links or custom links as needed. A custom link can point to a destination that is not represented by a WordPress page, but verify that its URL remains valid and directly reachable.
- Create submenus deliberately. Nest a link beneath a parent only when the parent is a useful category or landing page. Keep the hierarchy shallow enough to operate comfortably with a keyboard and on a phone.
- Choose how pages are populated. A Page List can automatically display published pages. If you convert that list into individually editable links, newly published pages will no longer be added automatically; review the menu whenever the site’s page set changes.
- Place the menu on the site. Open the Header or another appropriate template part, insert a Navigation block if one is not already present, and select the menu you edited.
- Save and preview. Save the menu and the template-part change. Preview the header on a representative page, an article or post, and any template with a different layout.
WordPress treats each Navigation item as a block, so standard block-editor operations apply. You can select an item, move it, change its link, or adjust its parent-child relationship without rebuilding the entire header.

Configure Navigation block behavior
Reordering and item types
Use the block’s list view or item controls to move links into the intended order. The Navigation block can contain navigation links, page lists, search, social links, the site title, site logo, login or logout controls, and buttons. Add only elements that help visitors move through the site; a header overloaded with utilities can hide the primary route.
Submenu activation
The block provides a submenu visibility choice of hover or click. Hover can expose a submenu quickly with a pointer, but it must not be the only way to reach those links. Click activation is often easier to understand on touch devices and gives keyboard users a clear activation step. Whichever setting you choose, test the parent link, the submenu trigger, and every child link independently.
Submenu arrows
Enable submenu arrows when they help users recognize that more choices exist. The arrow should be visually associated with the control and should not replace a usable text label. Check that the indicator remains visible at the narrowest supported width.
Mobile overlay visibility
Navigation block display settings include overlay visibility choices of never, mobile, or always. Use a mobile overlay when the full menu would crowd a small screen, but verify that opening, closing, and returning from the overlay are obvious. A site with few links may remain clearer without an overlay; a large hierarchy may need one to preserve tap target size and spacing.

Page List versus individually managed links
A Page List is useful when published pages should appear automatically. It also creates a maintenance trade-off: a new published page can enter the displayed list without a deliberate navigation decision. Converting the list to individual links gives precise editorial control, but future pages must be added manually. Choose based on who owns navigation and how often the page set changes.
Edit a menu in a classic theme
- Open Appearance > Menus in the WordPress dashboard.
- Select the menu that serves the header, or create one if the site has none.
- Add the required pages or custom links, then drag items into order.
- Drag an item slightly to the right to make it a submenu entry when the theme’s menu editor supports that hierarchy.
- Use the theme’s menu-location controls to assign the menu to the intended header or primary location.
- Save the menu, open the public site, and test the result at desktop and mobile widths.
Classic themes can supply their own responsive markup and styling. Therefore, a menu that is correctly assigned in the dashboard can still be difficult to use on a phone or with a keyboard if the theme’s implementation is inadequate. Treat the published header, not the editor preview alone, as the source of truth.

Choose the right navigation pattern
There is no universal best pattern. Compare the available choices against the number and depth of destinations, label discoverability, keyboard and screen-reader operation, mobile reachability, maintenance effort, and whether every URL remains directly crawlable.
| Pattern | Best fit | Advantages | Risks to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-level menu | A site with a small set of primary tasks | Fast scanning, fewer interaction states, and simple keyboard movement | Can become a long row; deep pages may be hard to discover without contextual links or search |
| Nested submenus | Related destinations that need a clear parent category | Groups content and keeps the first level compact | Hover-only operation, deep nesting, ambiguous parent labels, and difficult mobile reachability |
| Mobile overlay | A narrow viewport or a menu whose links cannot fit comfortably in the header | Preserves space and can provide larger, better-spaced touch targets | Hidden choices, unclear close behavior, focus problems, and back-button surprises |
Use a combination when appropriate: a concise desktop menu, a mobile overlay at narrow widths, and contextual links inside content for destinations that do not deserve a global slot.

Make the published menu accessible
The Navigation block documents responsive view, keyboard navigation, a <nav> landmark role, and ARIA attributes as built-in capabilities. Those capabilities reduce the amount of custom code required, but they do not certify the finished site. Theme CSS, custom JavaScript, modified templates, and third-party blocks can change the actual behavior.
Keyboard-only test
- Start at the top of the page and press Tab until the logo, menu trigger, or first navigation link receives focus.
- Confirm that the focus indicator is clearly visible against the header background.
- Move through every top-level item in a logical order.
- Open each submenu with the keyboard method provided by the control, then reach every child link without using a pointer.
- If a mobile overlay opens, check that focus enters the visible menu and does not become trapped behind it.
- Press Escape where the overlay or submenu supports closing, then verify that focus returns to the control that opened it.
Screen-reader and semantic checks
- Confirm that the navigation is announced as a navigation landmark rather than as an unlabeled collection of links.
- Ensure submenu controls communicate their expanded or collapsed state.
- Listen for a meaningful label on every link and button; an icon without an accessible name is not sufficient.
- Check that opening a menu does not cause unexplained focus jumps or silent content changes.
Visual and touch checks
- Test a wide desktop viewport, a tablet-sized width, and the narrowest phone width your audience uses.
- Look for clipped labels, overlapping items, accidental horizontal scrolling, and tap targets that are too close together.
- Check text and focus contrast against the header, overlay, submenu, and hover states.
- Verify that the logo, menu control, close control, and submenu arrows remain visible when text is enlarged.
Keep URLs crawlable when using client-side navigation
WordPress documents an optional client-side navigation approach that fetches destination HTML, replaces designated regions, updates browser history, loads required assets, and announces progress to screen readers. It also states that complete server-rendered HTML remains available for search-engine crawling. Preserve that fallback when adding enhancements: each menu item should still have a normal destination URL that can be opened directly.
Test enhanced navigation as a user
- Activate a link and confirm the expected region changes without leaving the page in a partially updated state.
- Use the browser’s Back and Forward buttons and verify that the correct content and menu state return.
- Reload a destination reached through the enhanced transition; it should load as a complete page.
- Disable JavaScript temporarily and confirm that links still reach their destinations through server-rendered pages.
- Listen for a screen-reader announcement when a transition begins and when the destination is available.
Run a complete navigation QA pass
- Inventory: compare every menu item with the current page list and remove dead or duplicate destinations.
- Hierarchy: inspect parent-child relationships and make sure each parent label describes its children.
- Destination check: open every URL, including custom links and submenu entries, in a fresh tab.
- Desktop check: test the widest and most common desktop layouts for wrapping, clipping, and focus visibility.
- Mobile check: test the overlay or collapsed menu at a narrow width, including open, close, submenu, and back behavior.
- Keyboard check: complete the route from the logo through the final submenu without a mouse.
- Assistive-technology check: verify landmark, control names, expanded states, and transition announcements.
- Fallback check: open destination URLs directly and test the site with JavaScript disabled if client-side navigation is enabled.
- Ownership: document who reviews navigation when pages are published, renamed, moved, or retired.
Troubleshoot common WordPress navigation problems
The menu was created but is not visible
In a block theme, creating a menu in Appearance > Editor > Navigation does not automatically render it. Edit the Header or the relevant template part, insert or select a Navigation block, connect it to the menu, and save the template-part change. In a classic theme, revisit the menu-location assignment in Appearance > Menus.
The menu appears on desktop but not on mobile
Inspect the Navigation block’s overlay visibility setting and the theme’s mobile header template. Confirm that the menu trigger is present at the narrow width, that its contrast is sufficient, and that opening it reveals the links rather than an empty container. For a classic theme, the responsive behavior may be theme-specific, so test the public markup and styles instead of assuming the dashboard assignment controls mobile output.

- Compatible with Wide Screens - To ensure compatibility with the dual monitor mount, your each monitor must meet three conditions at the same time: First, computer screens size range: 13 to 32 inches. Second, screen weight range: 4.4 to 19.8 lbs. Third, the back of the monitor screen must have VESA mounting holes with a pitch of 75x75mm or 100x100mm.
- Regarding the compatibility with desks - Your desk must meet three conditions at the same time: First, desk material: Only wooden desks are recommended, plastic or glass desks cannot be used. Second, desk thickness range: 0.59" - 3.54". Third, the bottom of the desk should not have any cross beams or panels, as this will interfere with installation. A newly published page is missing
Check whether the menu uses a Page List or individually managed links. A Page List can show published pages automatically, while a converted list of individual links will not add new pages on its own. Add the page manually when editorial control is intentional.
Submenus are impossible to use with a keyboard
Test the chosen hover-or-click setting and the theme’s custom scripts. A pointer-only hover interaction is not an acceptable substitute for a keyboard activation path. Ensure the submenu trigger receives focus, exposes its state, and allows every child link to be reached and activated.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe overlay opens but users lose their place
Check focus placement when the overlay opens, the close control, Escape handling, and focus restoration after closing. Then test the browser Back button and a direct reload of a destination if client-side navigation is active.
Links work in the editor but fail publicly
Open the published URL in a separate browser session and inspect custom links for outdated paths, redirects, or permission requirements. Check every template that renders the header; a different template part can contain a different Navigation block or menu assignment.
Maintain navigation as the site changes
Navigation is an ongoing content responsibility, not a one-time styling task. Assign an owner and review the menu whenever a page is published, renamed, redirected, or retired. Keep a short record of the intended top-level tasks, the menu location or template part, and the date of the last link and accessibility check.
Quick Recap
- Review high-traffic and high-support destinations before adding new links.
- Recheck submenu depth after reorganizing categories or pages.
- Test mobile overlay behavior after theme, template, or JavaScript changes.
- Repeat keyboard and screen-reader checks after custom header code is introduced.
- Confirm that directly opened URLs and browser history still work after navigation enhancements change.
A practical decision sequence
- If visitors cannot predict where a link leads, rewrite the label before changing the layout.
- If too many links compete at the first level, group related destinations under meaningful parents.
- If a submenu is hard to operate, prefer click activation or a flatter structure over adding more nesting.
- If the header does not fit on a phone, use a tested mobile overlay or reduce the global choices and add contextual routes.
- If page changes repeatedly make the menu stale, decide explicitly between automatic Page List behavior and individually maintained links.
- If an enhancement breaks history, announcements, or direct URLs, restore the server-rendered link path before refining the transition effect.
