The strongest technical Minecraft setup is a layered stack, not a giant “FPS mod” bundle: Sodium handles client rendering, Lithium optimizes simulation, FerriteCore reduces memory pressure, and spark identifies what is actually slowing a client or server. Add Litematica, MiniHUD, Tweakeroo, Item Scroller, Carpet and Mod Menu for a redstone and building workflow. On a dedicated server, consider Chunky, Immersive Optimization, Krypton and ModernFix only when their specific bottleneck matches your symptoms.

That division matters because low frame rate, long tick times, excessive memory use and network delay are different problems. The guide below maps each mod to the bottleneck it addresses, explains client-versus-server placement, and gives a measured way to assemble a technical setup without assuming every mod improves every world.

The technical Minecraft mod stack at a glance

Use this matrix as a starting point, then verify the exact Minecraft version, loader and dependencies on each project’s current official page. Compatibility is version-specific; a mod that is ideal on one release may be unavailable or require a different loader on another.

Mod Main bottleneck or task Typical side What it changes Vanilla-mechanics impact
Sodium Rendering, frame pacing and graphical issues Client Replaces and optimizes the rendering path Designed as a rendering optimization; verify feature compatibility with your other visual mods
Lithium Simulation, mob AI, block ticking and single-player internal server work Client and server Optimizes game-logic execution Aims not to change vanilla mechanics
FerriteCore Heap and memory usage Client and server Reduces memory overhead in several areas Optimization-focused; results vary by modpack
spark Finding CPU, memory, tick and server-health problems Client, server and proxy Profiles and reports performance Observational; it measures rather than redesigns gameplay
Litematica Schematic planning and accurate building Client Displays a planned structure in the world Planning aid; server rules still apply to construction and item collection
MiniHUD Technical overlays and spatial information Client Shows configurable diagnostic and building overlays Information only
Tweakeroo Client controls and repetitive technical tasks Client Adds configurable interaction and placement controls Some features can violate a multiplayer server’s rules
Item Scroller Inventory and container throughput Client Speeds repetitive item movement Convenience feature; confirm server policy
Carpet Technical rules, testing and commands Usually server, with client support where applicable Adds configurable technical rules and commands Rules can intentionally alter behavior, so enable them deliberately
Mod Menu Mod discovery and settings management Client Lists installed mods and exposes their configuration screens No gameplay change by itself

Choose the mod by the symptom, not by popularity

When frames are low or movement feels uneven: Sodium

Sodium is the rendering choice. Its official description calls it “a powerful rendering engine and optimization mod for Minecraft which improves frame rates and reduces micro-stutter, while fixing many graphical issues in Minecraft.” In practical terms, it belongs on the client that draws the world, not on a dedicated server that never renders frames.

Use it when the limiting factor is GPU work, render submission or frame pacing. It is a poor answer to a farm that makes the server’s tick loop exceed its budget: the client may display more frames while the simulation remains slow. Check your graphics driver, the supported loader and the exact Minecraft release before installation. Shader, connected-texture and other visual additions may need Sodium-compatible versions or separate compatibility layers; do not assume every rendering add-on can be carried over unchanged.

When mobs, redstone or block updates make the game slow: Lithium

Lithium targets simulation. It optimizes game physics, mob AI and block ticking while aiming not to change vanilla mechanics. In single-player, that also improves the internal server that runs alongside the client. On a dedicated server, install the server-compatible build so the optimization occurs where ticks are processed.

Lithium is the appropriate first test for a technical world with many entities, scheduled block updates or complex farms. It cannot make a server’s hardware faster than its workload allows, and it does not replace a profile that identifies the specific source of a long tick. Treat its “vanilla behavior” goal as an important design intention, not as permission to ignore version and mod compatibility checks.

When memory climbs or the JVM struggles: FerriteCore

FerriteCore reduces memory use in several ways. The project reports a drop from 1,792 MB to 984 MB of heap usage in an All Of Fabric 3 fixed-seed comparison after two minutes; that is a FerriteCore project measurement from 2026, not a universal reduction for every pack. The same project notes that results depend on the pack.

Install it when you see allocation pressure, frequent garbage-collection pauses, or a modpack that approaches its memory limit even though frame rate and tick time look normal. The useful outcome is headroom: fewer memory-related pauses and less risk of an out-of-memory failure. Do not translate the example into a promised percentage, and do not allocate unlimited RAM as a substitute for reducing overhead. Excessive heap allocation can make garbage collection pauses more disruptive on some systems.

When you do not know what is wrong: spark

spark is the diagnostic layer. It profiles clients, servers and proxies and reports CPU profiling data, memory inspection and server-health information such as TPS, tick duration, CPU usage, memory usage and disk usage. Its Modrinth project page displayed 23.7 million downloads in 2026, but popularity is not a diagnosis: use a short profile to establish whether the problem is CPU, memory or tick related.

  • COMPACT RESEALABLE PACKAGE: store your pack of Windex Gaming Wipes anywhere in your home for whenever a quick and easy wipedown is needed

A useful investigation has three phases:

  1. Reproduce one symptom. Stand in the affected area, trigger the farm or perform the action that causes the slowdown. Note whether the symptom is visual stutter, delayed game logic, a disconnect or a crash.
  2. Capture a short profile. Start spark’s CPU or health profiling facility for the smallest interval that includes the problem. A controlled window is easier to interpret than an hours-long recording full of unrelated activity.
  3. Read the category before changing mods. High render work points toward the client and Sodium-compatible graphics settings; long tick sections point toward simulation, entities or block updates; memory growth points toward allocation and heap pressure; disk or network indicators require server or infrastructure investigation.
  4. Change one variable. Apply one targeted optimization, repeat the same scenario and compare the report. Installing five optimizers at once makes it impossible to tell which change helped or introduced a conflict.
  5. Keep the profile with the test conditions. Record the Minecraft version, loader, player count, world area and whether the test was single-player or dedicated-server. Without those conditions, two profiles are not meaningful comparisons.

Do not use a download count as evidence of a performance gain. spark’s value is that it can show where time and memory are going in your particular world.

Quality-of-life tools for a technical workflow

A representative Modrinth technical pack, Technically Enhanced, combines Litematica, MiniHUD, Tweakeroo, Item Scroller, Carpet, Sodium, Lithium, spark, Mod Menu and related libraries. The combination illustrates a workflow: plan the build, expose the information, perform repetitive actions efficiently, enforce or test rules, optimize the engine and then measure the result. You can install the components individually instead of adopting the entire pack.

Litematica: build from a precise plan

Litematica displays a schematic in the world so you can align a farm, storage system or redstone machine with a known design. It is especially useful when a one-block offset can break a clock, portal linkage or collection system. Treat the hologram as a construction plan, not as proof that a server permits automated placement or item acquisition. In multiplayer, follow the server’s rules and use legitimate materials and actions.

MiniHUD: put technical facts on screen

MiniHUD provides configurable overlays for technical work. Overlays can make boundaries, positions and other spatial information visible while you build or diagnose a farm. Keep only the overlays needed for the current task: a crowded display can obscure the very block or entity you are trying to inspect. Because it is a client information layer, it does not repair a server that is already missing tick deadlines.

Tweakeroo: powerful controls with a policy check

Tweakeroo adds client controls for repetitive or precision-oriented actions. Its flexibility is useful for technical building, but some features can violate multiplayer server rules. Before enabling any automation-like, placement-assistance or interaction feature, read the server’s rules and ask an administrator if the wording is unclear. A setting that is acceptable in a private test world may be prohibited on a public server.

Item Scroller: reduce inventory friction

Item Scroller speeds repetitive inventory and container operations. It is a workflow improvement rather than a rendering or simulation optimizer: it reduces clicks and time spent moving stacks while you prepare materials or service a farm. Check server policy in the same way you would for Tweakeroo, especially where rapid actions could be interpreted as automation.

Carpet: controlled technical rules and commands

Carpet supplies technical rules and commands for testing and administration. This makes it valuable in a development world where you need to isolate a mechanic, reproduce a timing condition or operate a controlled server. Rules can intentionally alter behavior, so maintain a clear distinction between a test configuration and a survival configuration. Document which rules are enabled before comparing results with an unmodified world.

Mod Menu: one place to inspect configuration

Mod Menu lists installed mods and provides access to their settings where a mod exposes a configuration screen. Use it as an inventory and troubleshooting aid: confirm that the expected build is loaded, check whether a feature is disabled, and identify duplicate or incompatible components. It does not improve performance by itself.

Server-side options: target a specific bottleneck

A server guide on Modrinth lists Chunky for pre-generating chunks, FerriteCore for memory reduction, Immersive Optimization for entity ticking, Krypton for network optimization, Lithium for general-purpose optimization and ModernFix for performance, memory and bug fixes. These are targeted options, not a guarantee that every server benefits equally.

Server symptom Option to investigate Why it may help What to verify first
Exploration causes pauses as new terrain is created Chunky Pre-generates chunks so generation work is moved out of live exploration Available disk space, generation time and a safe backup before the job
High heap use on a large modpack FerriteCore Reduces memory overhead in several areas Pack-specific compatibility and a before/after memory measurement
Many entities consume tick time Immersive Optimization Targets entity ticking Whether its behavior is acceptable for the entities and mechanics in your world
Network processing is the limiting factor Krypton Targets network optimization Server platform, loader and a profile showing network-related pressure
General simulation overhead Lithium Optimizes physics, AI and block ticking Exact server build and compatibility with gameplay mods
Mixed performance, memory or bug issues ModernFix Combines performance, memory and bug fixes Release notes, supported versions and interactions with other optimization mods

Pre-generation is not a free speed boost: it moves work to an earlier maintenance window and consumes storage. Network optimization cannot fix a farm whose tick loop is saturated, and an entity-ticking optimization should be validated against mechanics that depend on entity behavior. Use spark before and after any server change so you can identify the actual effect.

A safe installation and testing sequence

  1. Write down the baseline. Record the Minecraft release, loader, Java runtime, hardware, render distance, simulation distance, player count and whether the test is single-player or dedicated-server. Capture a spark health or profile report if the issue is performance-related.
  2. Back up the world and server. Optimization mods are intended to preserve normal behavior, but backups are essential before changing a technical world or enabling Carpet rules.
  3. Install the loader-compatible foundation. Download each mod from its official project page and select the file that matches your Minecraft release and loader. Install required libraries listed by that page; do not substitute a similarly named file from an unrelated project.
  4. Add one performance layer at a time. Start with Sodium for a client rendering problem, Lithium for simulation, or FerriteCore for memory pressure. Launch, load the same world and repeat the baseline scenario.
  5. Add workflow tools. Install Litematica, MiniHUD, Tweakeroo, Item Scroller, Carpet and Mod Menu only when you need their functions. Confirm that the game reaches the title screen and that each configuration screen opens.
  6. Test multiplayer separately. A client-only mod can be present without being installed on the server, while server-side optimizers must match the server’s loader and version. Join a test copy before connecting to the live world.
  7. Profile the final scenario. Re-run the same farm, route or build operation, compare spark output and note any changed behavior. Keep the stack that solves the measured problem with the fewest unnecessary components.

Compatibility and version checks that prevent most failures

  • Loader and release: Fabric, NeoForge and other loaders are not interchangeable. A file built for one loader or Minecraft release may fail at startup even when the mod name is identical.
  • Client versus server: Sodium is principally a client rendering component. Lithium and FerriteCore can be relevant to both sides, while spark can profile clients, servers and proxies. Install only the side required by the project’s instructions.
  • Dependency chain: Technical packs often include libraries. Let the project page specify the dependency and version rather than guessing from a similarly named library.
  • Rendering conflicts: Visual mods and shader-related additions may need Sodium-compatible builds. If the game crashes during renderer initialization, remove the latest visual addition first and test a minimal client.
  • Configuration scope: A setting in Mod Menu or a Carpet rule can change the test conditions. Export or record settings before asking others to reproduce a result.
  • World safety: Never test experimental rules or mass chunk generation on the only copy of a valuable world.

Troubleshooting by failure mode

The game crashes before the menu

Remove the most recently added mod, confirm its loader and Minecraft release, and check every dependency listed by the project. Reintroduce components one at a time. If the crash occurs only with a visual stack, test Sodium alone before adding overlays or shader-related components.

FPS improves but the farm still runs slowly

This is usually a simulation or server issue rather than a rendering issue. Profile the affected area with spark, inspect tick duration and CPU categories, then evaluate Lithium or a targeted server option. Lowering visual settings cannot shorten a saturated tick loop.

Memory use is high after adding more content

Confirm whether the problem is a steady heap increase, a startup allocation spike or garbage-collection pauses. Test FerriteCore with the same world and wait for the same interval used in the baseline. Its reported 1,792 MB-to-984 MB example was measured in a specific All Of Fabric 3 fixed-seed comparison after two minutes, so use your own before-and-after numbers for a different pack.

Players report delayed actions or disconnects

Separate network delay from server tick delay. A health report that shows long ticks points to simulation; network indicators point toward transport or server networking. Investigate Krypton only when the profile and server conditions support that diagnosis, and do not present it as a cure for every form of lag.

A multiplayer administrator rejects a convenience feature

Disable the Tweakeroo or Item Scroller feature, ask which actions are permitted, and keep a server-specific configuration profile. Client convenience is never more important than the server’s rules.

How to measure whether a change helped

Technical Minecraft workloads are variable, so use repeatable tests instead of impressions from a single flight. Choose one route, farm cycle or build operation; keep render and simulation distances, player count, world location and weather constant; and run the same duration before and after the change. Record average and worst observed tick duration when available, TPS, CPU and memory indicators, and any visible frame-pacing issue. Restart between tests when startup state or memory history could influence the result.

Interpret the result in the category you changed. A Sodium test should be judged primarily by client frame rate and stutter in the same camera path. A Lithium test should be judged by tick behavior under the same entity and block-update load. FerriteCore should be judged by heap usage and pause behavior. A server network optimization should be judged with the same player and connection conditions. If a change improves one metric while harming another, keep the trade-off only when it matches your actual priority.

Recommended stacks for common players

Single-player technical builder

Start with Sodium, Lithium and FerriteCore. Add Litematica and MiniHUD for planning and overlays, Item Scroller for inventory work, and Mod Menu for configuration. Add Tweakeroo only for controls you understand and can disable when testing vanilla behavior. Use spark when a farm or large build causes a measurable slowdown.

Dedicated-server administrator

Use Lithium and FerriteCore as general candidates, then profile with spark. Add Chunky if chunk generation during exploration is the problem. Consider Immersive Optimization for entity-heavy workloads, Krypton for a demonstrated network bottleneck and ModernFix for a combination of performance, memory or bug issues. Roll out one change at a time on a backup or staging server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Redstone or farm researcher

Keep a controlled test world with documented Carpet rules. Use MiniHUD and Litematica for spatial accuracy, spark for measurements, and Lithium only after confirming that the optimized behavior remains the behavior you intend to study. Never compare timings from worlds with different rules or simulation distances.

Frequently asked questions

Can I install all of these mods together?

Some combinations are common, including the stack represented by Technically Enhanced, but compatibility depends on the Minecraft release, loader, dependencies and configuration. Build the stack incrementally and test after each addition.

Which mod gives the biggest FPS increase?

No universal percentage is established for the complete stack. Sodium is the mod in this list aimed directly at rendering and frame pacing, but the result depends on your GPU, driver, view distance, visual features and other client mods.

Does Lithium change redstone mechanics?

Lithium is designed to optimize simulation while aiming not to change vanilla mechanics. For a technical experiment, document the exact version and test configuration rather than assuming every modded interaction is identical.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need FerriteCore if Minecraft does not crash?

Not necessarily. Its benefit is reduced memory overhead and additional headroom, which matters when you see allocation pressure or pauses. Measure your pack before and after instead of installing it solely because another pack includes it.

Can spark run on a proxy as well as a server?

Yes. spark provides profiling for clients, servers and proxies, with the available information depending on where it is installed and what is being measured.

Are Tweakeroo and Item Scroller allowed on every server?

No. Their features can affect how quickly or conveniently a player performs actions. Read the server rules and obtain an administrator’s approval before enabling anything that could be interpreted as automation or unfair assistance.
