Install openssh-server, start the documented sshd.service unit, and enable it if it must start after reboot. If the unit exists but clients still cannot connect, troubleshoot the next layer: /etc/ssh/sshd_config, firewalld, SELinux for custom ports, or an upstream network firewall.

What “sshd.service not found” means on CentOS 7
Systemd can manage only units that are present on the machine. The OpenSSH server package supplies the server daemon and its systemd unit; on CentOS 7 that unit is named sshd.service. Red Hat’s RHEL 7 administration guidance states that an OpenSSH server requires the openssh-server package. When that package is absent, systemd has no sshd.service definition to load, so a start, enable, or status request returns a “unit not found” error.
The server’s configuration file is /etc/ssh/sshd_config. That file is separate from the client configuration and is read by the sshd daemon. Installing the package creates the server components; it does not, by itself, prove that the daemon is running, enabled for the next boot, reachable through the firewall, or listening on the port you expect.

Do not treat every SSH failure as a systemd failure. A missing unit, a syntax error in sshd_config, a stopped daemon, a blocked TCP port, and an SELinux denial on a custom port are different problems with different fixes.
Identify the failing layer before changing anything
Use the first error you can reproduce to classify the problem. The following decision table keeps package, configuration, service, and network issues separate.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Observed symptom | Most likely layer | Useful check | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
Unit sshd.service could not be found |
Package | rpm -q openssh-server |
An absent package explains why systemd cannot load the unit. |
yum cannot find openssh-server |
Repository or network | Capture the complete yum error and inspect enabled repositories. | This is a package-source or connectivity problem, not a systemd unit problem. |
sshd -t reports a line or directive |
Configuration | Correct the named entry in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, then test again. |
Do not restart until the syntax test succeeds. |
| The unit exists but will not start | Service or configuration | systemctl status sshd and journalctl -u sshd -b |
The status and boot journal identify the startup failure. |
| The service is active but remote clients time out | Firewall or upstream network | Check firewalld, upstream security groups, routing, and the expected listening address and port. | A running daemon can still be unreachable. |
| A custom SSH port is rejected | Firewall or SELinux | Check the firewalld rule and the SELinux ssh_port_t label for that TCP port. |
Both policy layers must allow a non-standard port. |
This classification prevents a common mistake: repeatedly restarting a service when the real failure is a repository, firewall, routing, or SELinux rule.
Install the CentOS 7 OpenSSH server package
Confirm whether the package is present
Run the package query as root or through sudo:
sudo rpm -q openssh-server
If the query reports that the package is not installed, systemd’s missing-unit error is expected. If it reports an installed package, skip to the service and configuration checks instead of installing a second copy.
Install from an enabled repository
Install the server package with CentOS 7’s yum package manager:
sudo yum install -y openssh-server
The -y option accepts yum’s confirmation prompt. The package name matters: openssh-server supplies the daemon and unit; substituting an unrelated OpenSSH package will not create the server service.

sudo rpm -q openssh-server
A successful package query confirms installation; it does not yet confirm that the daemon is active or accepting remote connections.
Start sshd now and enable it for future boots
Start the current session
Start the documented unit:
sudo systemctl start sshd.service
systemctl start affects the current boot. It does not configure the service to return automatically after a reboot.

If this machine must accept SSH after every reboot, enable the unit:
sudo systemctl enable sshd.service
Red Hat documents this command for boot-time startup. Enabling and starting are separate operations: enabling records the boot policy, while starting launches the daemon now.
Check the resulting state
Inspect the unit after starting it:
sudo systemctl status sshd.service
Use the status output to distinguish an active daemon from one that exited during startup. If the service is not active, do not continue to firewall troubleshooting yet; validate the configuration and read the service journal first.
Validate sshd_config before every restart
Run the syntax check
Before restarting a working daemon, test the server configuration:
sudo sshd -t
A successful test produces no diagnostic line. If the command identifies a line or directive, edit /etc/ssh/sshd_config to correct that entry and run sshd -t again. Repeat until the test completes without an error.
Restart only after the test passes
Once the syntax check is clean, apply the configuration:

sudo systemctl restart sshd.service
Immediately verify the unit:
sudo systemctl status sshd.service
If the restart fails, inspect the current-boot journal:
sudo journalctl -u sshd -b
The journal often identifies the directive or startup condition that status alone does not explain. Correct the reported configuration issue, rerun sshd -t, and restart only after the test succeeds.

Keep a fallback console open
Make SSH changes from an existing console, hypervisor console, or other independent access path and keep that session open while testing. A malformed directive, an accidental port change, or a policy mistake can terminate new SSH logins. The independent session gives you a way to repair the file without relying on the connection you are changing.
When sshd is active but remote connections fail
An active systemd unit proves that the daemon started; it does not prove that packets can reach it. Work outward from the CentOS host to the network perimeter.
Check firewalld state
On CentOS 7, firewalld is the relevant host firewall service. Check both its systemd state and its own runtime state:
sudo systemctl status firewalldsudo firewall-cmd --statesudo firewall-cmd --list-services
These commands show whether firewalld is running, whether its command interface reports an active state, and which named services are currently allowed. If the standard SSH service is missing and firewalld is in use, add it permanently and reload the rules:
sudo firewall-cmd --permanent --add-service=sshsudo firewall-cmd --reload

The permanent rule is stored for future reloads and boots; the reload applies the change to the running firewall. Recheck the service list after the reload if you need to confirm the rule is present.
Check controls outside the host
If firewalld allows SSH and the unit remains active but a remote client still times out, inspect upstream security groups, routers, network ACLs, and the route between client and server. Also confirm that the client is using the server’s reachable address and the port configured in sshd_config. A host firewall can be correctly configured while an upstream device blocks the same TCP connection.

Separate timeouts from authentication errors
A timeout or refusal before a login prompt points toward reachability, address, port, or firewall checks. If a client reaches the SSH service and then receives an authentication or account error, the service and network path are already functioning; investigate the account and authentication configuration rather than reinstalling the package. This article’s “service not found” repair ends once the daemon is installed, running, and reachable on the intended port.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Using a non-standard SSH port
Align the daemon configuration
If /etc/ssh/sshd_config contains a changed Port value, treat that port as a coordinated change. First run:
sudo sshd -t
Do not restart until the syntax test passes. A custom port must be permitted by every relevant control layer, not just by sshd.
Allow the port in firewalld
Add a firewalld rule for the chosen TCP port according to your host’s firewall policy. The standard named ssh service covers the standard SSH port; changing the daemon’s port requires a matching rule for the new TCP port. Reload firewalld after making the permanent change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Label the port for SELinux
Red Hat documents that a second or non-standard sshd port must be assigned the SELinux ssh_port_t type. For example, to label TCP port 2222:
sudo semanage port -a -t ssh_port_t -p tcp 2222
Without the appropriate SELinux port label, SELinux can reject sshd’s attempt to bind the port even when the daemon configuration and firewalld rule are correct. The port number in the command must match the Port value you selected.

Restart and connect with the matching client option
After the configuration test, firewall rule, and SELinux label are in place, restart and check sshd:
sudo systemctl restart sshd.servicesudo systemctl status sshd.service
Connect from the client by specifying the same port:
ssh -p 2222 user@host
Replace 2222 with the configured port and replace user@host with the intended account and address. If the client still cannot connect, verify both firewalld and SELinux before examining upstream network controls.
Why SSH may work on localhost but not remotely
A localhost test exercises the daemon through the local machine and can succeed even when remote traffic is blocked. The difference usually lies outside the daemon process:
- The host firewall may allow local traffic while lacking an inbound SSH service or custom-port rule.
- An upstream security group, router, or network ACL may block the server’s address or port.
- The remote client may be using an address that does not route to the CentOS host.
- The daemon may be configured for a different port than the one used by the remote client.
- A custom port may lack the SELinux
ssh_port_tlabel, preventing the expected bind.
Use the firewalld checks, service status, configuration test, and custom-port checks in this order. Do not infer remote reachability solely from a successful local connection.
A complete recovery sequence
Use this ordered procedure when you are starting from the original “service not found” error:
- Confirm the failure text and query the package with
sudo rpm -q openssh-server. - If the package is absent, install it with
sudo yum install -y openssh-server. If yum cannot find it, stop and resolve the repository or network error shown by yum. - Start the unit with
sudo systemctl start sshd.service. - Enable boot-time startup with
sudo systemctl enable sshd.servicewhen persistent availability is required. - Check the unit using
sudo systemctl status sshd.service. - Before changing or applying server settings, run
sudo sshd -tand repair any reported line in/etc/ssh/sshd_config. - After a clean test, restart with
sudo systemctl restart sshd.serviceand inspectsudo journalctl -u sshd -bif startup fails. - For remote failures, check firewalld state and allowed services, then permit the standard SSH service when appropriate.
- For a custom port, align the sshd configuration, firewalld rule, SELinux
ssh_port_tlabel, and client command. - If the host checks pass but remote clients still time out, investigate upstream security groups, routing, and the address or port being used.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Installing only an SSH client: a client package does not provide the server daemon or
sshd.service; the required server package isopenssh-server. - Confusing start with enable: starting affects the current boot, while enabling controls startup after future boots.
- Restarting without a syntax test: always run
sshd -tbefore applying edits tosshd_config. - Opening only one policy layer: a custom port needs both a firewalld allowance and the SELinux
ssh_port_tlabel. - Blaming systemd for a repository failure: a yum “package not found” error must be solved through repository and network diagnostics.
- Closing the only access session: retain an independent console while changing SSH settings.
- Assuming an active daemon is reachable: firewalls, upstream controls, routing, and incorrect destination ports can still block remote clients.
What a successful repair looks like
The repair is complete when the installed package query succeeds, sshd.service is active, and the service is enabled if boot persistence is required. The configuration test returns no diagnostic, the intended SSH port is allowed by firewalld, and any custom port has the SELinux ssh_port_t label. A remote client must then use the matching address and port; if it still times out, the remaining fault is outside the local sshd unit and should be traced through upstream security and routing controls.
