The RTX 4090 does not need a special or expensive motherboard. It is a PCIe 4.0 graphics card that works in a modern, CPU-connected PCIe x16 slot. Choose the motherboard around your processor, RAM, storage, case, and expansion needs—not because the GPU has a 4090 badge.
For most builds, a good B650/B850 or B760 board is enough. Move to X670E/X870E or Z790-class hardware only when you need additional M.2 slots, USB connectivity, networking, expansion lanes, or overclocking features.

Best AMD value: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi
The MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi is a strong match for a Ryzen 7000, 8000, or 9000 desktop processor. It uses the AM5 socket and DDR5 memory, provides a CPU-connected PCIe 4.0 x16 graphics slot, three M.2 sockets, 2.5Gb Ethernet, Wi-Fi 6E, and a BIOS Flash Button.
#1 Best Overall
- 16,384 NVIDIA CUDA Cores
- Supports 4K 120Hz HDR, 8K 60Hz HDR and variable refresh rate as indicated in HDMI 2.1A
- New streaming multiprocessors: up to 2x power and power efficiency
- Fourth generation tensor cores: up to 2x AI power
- Third-generation RT cores: up to 2x ray tracing performance
Its PCIe 4.0 graphics slot is not a disadvantage for the RTX 4090: NVIDIA lists the card as PCI Express Gen 4. The board is best for a single-GPU gaming system with one to three NVMe drives and no need for unusual expansion hardware.
Check the manual before filling every M.2 or PCIe slot, because secondary storage and expansion slots can share chipset lanes. The board also offers less high-speed I/O and expansion flexibility than X670E or newer premium AM5 models.
Best AMD expansion option: MSI MAG X670E Tomahawk WiFi
The MSI MAG X670E Tomahawk WiFi is the better choice when the build needs more connectivity, PCIe 5.0 resources, or storage flexibility. It supports Ryzen 7000, 8000, and 9000 processors, DDR5 memory, a PCIe 5.0 graphics slot, PCIe 5.0 M.2 support, and a stronger power-delivery design than a typical mainstream board.
PCIe 5.0 does not make an RTX 4090 faster by itself. Its value is in future graphics cards, high-speed storage, additional expansion, and a high-end Ryzen CPU. For one GPU and one or two SSDs, compare its price with current B650/B850 and X870/X870E alternatives before paying extra.
Best Intel value: MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi DDR5
The MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi DDR5 supports Intel 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation desktop processors. It includes a PCIe 5.0 x16 primary slot, four M.2 slots, Wi-Fi, 2.5Gb-class networking, reinforced PCIe construction, and a BIOS Flash Button.
It suits an LGA1700 build using a compatible unlocked processor, multiple NVMe drives, or a buyer who wants Z-series power tuning and connectivity without flagship pricing. It is not the right default for a new platform if you want a current Intel socket, and Z790 is unnecessary for a locked CPU unless its additional I/O is useful.
Best for reusing DDR4: MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi DDR4
The DDR4 version makes sense when you already own a substantial DDR4 kit and are intentionally building on Intel LGA1700. It is a separate product from the DDR5 model. DDR4 and DDR5 are not interchangeable, so match the motherboard to the memory you intend to use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a new build that needs new memory anyway, DDR5 or a newer platform may be the more sensible long-term choice. The RTX 4090 itself does not determine this decision.
Do you need PCIe 5.0 for an RTX 4090?
No. The RTX 4090 is a PCIe Gen 4 card, and a PCIe 4.0 x16 slot is sufficient. PCIe generations are backward and forward compatible in normal desktop use, so the card can also operate in a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot.
Prioritize a full-length slot that is electrically connected for x16 operation and directly connected to the CPU. A physical x16 slot can run at fewer lanes depending on the motherboard and installed devices. Read the manual for lane-sharing rules before adding a second full-length card or expansion storage.
Choose the platform before the motherboard
AMD AM5
AM5 boards—including B650, B650E, X670, X670E, B850, X870, and X870E models—use DDR5. They are attractive for Ryzen gaming systems and provide a meaningful upgrade path within the AM5 family. B650 is usually enough for one RTX 4090; X670E or X870E is justified by additional storage, PCIe 5.0 resources, USB connectivity, or workstation expansion.

Use a validated memory kit, update the BIOS when appropriate, and avoid assuming that every prolonged first boot means the board is defective. Two matched DIMMs are generally easier to run than four modules or very aggressive memory configurations.

Intel LGA1700
LGA1700 boards support Intel 12th-, 13th-, and 14th-generation processors, depending on the model and BIOS revision. Z790 is useful for compatible unlocked CPUs, overclocking, power tuning, and additional I/O. B760 is the better value when using a locked processor and when its storage and connectivity are sufficient.
Intel boards are sold in separate DDR4 and DDR5 versions. The memory standard is determined by the motherboard; a DDR4 board cannot accept DDR5.
Physical fit matters more than chipset branding
The Founders Edition RTX 4090 is listed at 304mm long, 137mm wide, and three slots—or 61mm thick. Board-partner cards can be larger: MSI lists its RTX 4090 Ventus 3X E at 322 × 136 × 62mm. Check the exact card, not just the GPU family. Sources: NVIDIA specifications and MSI specifications.
- Compare GPU length and thickness with the case’s clearance.
- Check interference with a front radiator, fans, or drive cage.
- Expect a three- or four-slot card to block nearby PCIe slots.
- Confirm that capture cards, sound cards, 10Gb network adapters, or NVMe cards still fit.
- Leave room to route the GPU power cable without sharply bending it at the connector.
Power supply and VRM considerations
NVIDIA lists 450W total graphics power and an 850W recommended system power supply for the Founders Edition. The right PSU capacity also depends on the processor, drives, overclocking, transient behavior, PSU quality, and the specific RTX 4090 model. NVIDIA specifies either three PCIe 8-pin cables through the supplied adapter or a 450W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 power cable.
The motherboard does not provide the RTX 4090’s main power. Its VRM is primarily relevant to the CPU, sustained all-core workloads, CPU overclocking, and thermals. A quality midrange board is normally sufficient for a non-overclocked processor. Do not rank boards by phase count alone; implementation, power stages, cooling, BIOS behavior, and airflow matter more.
Storage, networking, and BIOS checks
Count your drives before buying. Mainstream B650 boards may provide three M.2 slots, while the Z790 Tomahawk provides four. More important than the number is how they connect. Check whether an M.2 socket disables SATA ports, reduces a secondary slot, or changes the primary GPU from x16 to x8.
Built-in Wi-Fi is optional. It is useful when Ethernet is unavailable and often includes Bluetooth, while wired Ethernet remains preferable for many latency-sensitive or high-bandwidth setups. Confirm the exact wireless standard and regional features on the current product page.
Also verify BIOS support for the exact CPU. A BIOS Flash Button is useful when a board may ship with an older firmware version. CPU compatibility, memory type, cooler mounting, form factor, lane allocation, rear USB ports, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and audio should all be checked together.
When a premium motherboard is worthwhile
Consider premium ASUS ROG/TUF, Gigabyte Aorus, MSI MEG/MPG, or ASRock Taichi-class boards only when you need specific features such as:
- More M.2 sockets or expansion lanes.
- USB4 or Thunderbolt-class connectivity.
- 10Gb Ethernet.
- Multiple full-length expansion slots.
- Advanced diagnostics and firmware controls.
- Extreme CPU overclocking or unusually demanding sustained workloads.
A premium board will not automatically deliver higher RTX 4090 frame rates. At lower resolutions or very high refresh rates, the processor can be the bottleneck, and a motherboard upgrade cannot fix that without also changing the CPU or platform.
RTX 4090 motherboard compatibility checklist
- Confirm the CPU socket and BIOS support for the exact processor.
- Match the board to DDR4 or DDR5 memory.
- Confirm ATX, microATX, or mini-ITX compatibility with the case.
- Check the exact GPU’s length, thickness, and power-connector clearance.
- Verify that the main slot is CPU-connected and electrically x16 for your planned configuration.
- Read lane-sharing details for M.2 drives and additional PCIe cards.
- Choose a suitable, high-quality PSU and the correct GPU cables.
- Confirm cooler mounting support and CPU power connectors.
- Check the required USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and audio features.
Verdict
For most Ryzen RTX 4090 gaming PCs, the MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi is the sensible starting point. Choose an X670E, X870E, or comparable premium AM5 board when you need more expansion or PCIe 5.0 resources. For Intel LGA1700, the MSI MAG Z790 Tomahawk WiFi DDR5 is a well-equipped option, while the DDR4 version is mainly for buyers reusing existing memory. In every case, check the CPU, RAM, case, PSU, GPU dimensions, and lane layout before paying for a more expensive chipset.
