During AMD’s Q4 2025 earnings call, the company’s CEO said Valve was “on track to begin shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year.” Valve later moved its public timing to summer 2026, then opened reservations on June 22 with some orders showing shipping estimates in 2027.
What Lisa Su actually said
AMD CEO Lisa Su discussed the Steam Machine during AMD’s Q4 2025 earnings call. The statement was reported on February 4, 2026, after the call took place.

Su said: “Valve is on track to begin shipping its AMD-powered Steam Machine early this year.” (PCGamesN’s report)

That wording matters. Su said “early this year,” not a specific month or date. She also said the system was on track; she did not announce a guaranteed consumer release date, a price, or a delivery schedule.

AMD’s comment was still meaningful because AMD supplies the Steam Machine’s semi-custom processor/APU. Su would have had relevant supply-chain visibility, but AMD does not control Valve’s retail launch communications. The statement therefore indicated confidence from a key hardware partner—not a formal Valve confirmation that customers would receive machines by a particular day.
What Valve had promised before February
Valve had previously announced the Steam Machine for early 2026. Some contemporary reports narrowed that expectation to the first quarter, but neither Su’s comment nor the available official announcements supplied a precise month or day.
“Early 2026” should not be treated as synonymous with March 31. It was a broad release window, and Valve had not published a final date or price when Su made her remark.
The timeline changed in June
The most important update came on June 4. In a Steamworks announcement, Valve said the Steam Machine and Steam Frame were “shipping this summer.” That was a clear change in public wording from the earlier early-2026 window.

The announcement also covered Steam Machine-specific Verified testing and developer guidance. Valve describes the system as a PC running SteamOS, using the same broad software stack as Steam Deck: the Steam interface and Proton. Valve says the machine is roughly six times as powerful as Steam Deck, but that is Valve’s own comparison rather than an independently established frame-rate multiplier.
June 22 was a reservation launch, not necessarily immediate delivery
On June 22, Valve’s official Steam Hardware announcement said the Steam Machine was available to reserve in multiple configurations.
The U.S. prices listed in that announcement were:
| Configuration | Listed U.S. price |
|---|---|
| Steam Machine 512GB | $1,049 |
| 512GB with Steam Controller | $1,128 |
| Steam Machine 2TB | $1,349 |
| 2TB with Steam Controller | $1,428 |
Those prices are the amounts Valve listed on June 22. Regional pricing, taxes, availability and later revisions may differ.

Valve said component shortages had affected launch availability, and orders placed at that point could show a 2027 shipping estimate. “Launch,” “reservation availability” and “customer delivery” therefore need to be treated as separate milestones.

Why the schedule and pricing changed
Valve attributed the situation to rapidly changing component costs and availability, specifically mentioning RAM and storage. The company said some components had periods when they could not be sourced at any price.
That created three related pressures:
- Price pressure: Valve’s original pricing goal became unviable as component costs changed.
- Supply pressure: The number of units available around launch was limited.
- Schedule pressure: The public window moved from early 2026 to summer 2026, while individual fulfillment estimates could extend into 2027.
This does not prove that shortages alone caused every change to the schedule. It reflects Valve’s own explanation for the pricing and availability situation.
What the Steam Machine is meant to do
The Steam Machine is a living-room-oriented PC running SteamOS. Its purpose is to provide a more console-like way to access a Steam library while retaining the flexibility of PC hardware.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Its main software advantages are SteamOS integration, the familiar Steam interface and Proton support for many Windows games. Valve’s Steam Machine Verified system is intended to communicate whether a game should provide an acceptable out-of-box experience on the hardware.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
Verified status is useful, but it is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Buyers who depend on unsupported anti-cheat systems, non-Steam launchers, certain VR software or Windows-only applications may be better served by a Windows gaming PC.

1. Price
At $1,049 to $1,349 before considering regional taxes or accessories, the Steam Machine sits in gaming-PC territory rather than traditional console territory. Its value depends on more than component cost: SteamOS, compact living-room use and reduced setup friction are part of the proposition.
2. Storage
The 512GB model has the lower entry price, but modern PC games can fill that capacity quickly. The 2TB version costs substantially more but may be more practical for a large living-room library.

SteamOS is a strong fit for people whose libraries already work well through Proton. It is a weaker fit for buyers who need maximum launcher, anti-cheat and application compatibility. A Steam Machine Verified label should be treated as an out-of-box signal, not a promise that every feature of every game will work perfectly.
Best Value
- 1TB NVMe SSD
- 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
- Wi-Fi 6E
- 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
- Carrying case with removable liner
4. Delivery timing
Check the estimated date shown for the specific model and region during reservation. Reservation position, configuration and local availability can affect fulfillment. Do not assume that reserving a machine guarantees immediate shipment.
5. Alternatives
- Steam Machine: Best suited to a Steam-first living-room setup and buyers willing to reserve.
- Steam Deck: Better for portability and a lower-cost entry into SteamOS, but much less powerful according to Valve’s own comparison.
- Windows gaming PC: Better for broad game, launcher and anti-cheat compatibility, as well as upgrade flexibility.
- Steam Controller: A sensible add-on for a couch-based setup if you do not already own a compatible gamepad.

So, was Lisa Su right?
Yes—but only in the context of when she said it and what she actually claimed.
On February 3–4, AMD said Valve was on track for early-year shipping, consistent with Valve’s then-public early-2026 target. That was a schedule-confidence statement, not a precise release-date confirmation.
By June, Valve’s consumer-facing timing had changed to “shipping this summer.” On June 22, Valve opened reservations, while also warning about component constraints and showing that some orders could be scheduled for 2027.
As of August 18, 2026, it is therefore inaccurate to describe the Steam Machine simply as an early-2026 release. The accurate timeline is: AMD said early 2026 was on track; Valve later shifted the public window to summer; and fulfillment for some reservations could extend into 2027.
