The useful answer is a personal shortlist: choose mounts for how strongly they evoke an expansion, how distinctive they look or function, how recognizable they are, and whether players can still pursue them. The available evidence supports a few examples and acquisition caveats, but not a verified pick for every expansion—so this guide separates what is documented from what would need checking rather than filling gaps with guesses.
What “best mount from each expansion” means
A World of Warcraft Forums discussion asks, “Favourite mount from each expansion?”—a question about individual taste, not a ranking Blizzard or the player base has settled. Read the discussion. For a shortlist, sensible criteria are visual distinctiveness, a clear connection to an expansion’s theme or story, recognition, unusual mount functionality, and how practical it is to obtain now. Those criteria help explain a choice; they do not make it objective.
Acquisition also matters. A mount earned through a collection achievement, a legacy event, or a shop promotion presents a different prospect for players. A favorite may be memorable precisely because it was limited, but that does not mean a new or returning player can still get it.
Why this cannot responsibly be a complete expansion-by-expansion list
The available sources do not establish one verified standout, with a current acquisition route, for every expansion. Wowhead has a guide indexing mount locations and appearances for The War Within, but that is not a complete all-expansion ranking. See the guide. Naming a winner and telling readers how to obtain it for every expansion would require checking current collection references or relevant official game and patch information row by row.
#1 Best Overall
- Incredibly detailed, highly decorated 1:12 scale posed figures based on the global phenomenon WORLD OF WARCRAFT game
- Dwarf Hunter: Beast Master & Marksman includes 1 alternate head, 2 weapons, 2 interchangeable armor pieces, 1 animal companion, and environmental base
- Pandaren: Monk & Rogue includes 1 alternate head, 2 weapons, 1 staff, 2 interchangeable armor pieces, and environmental base
- Also includes a mystery weapon
- Collect all McFARLANE TOYS World of Warcraft figures
Scope needs care, too: “each expansion” can mean expansion packs only or the original game plus every expansion. The War Within is represented in the cited guide, but these sources do not establish the current latest expansion or provide a verified series of picks through it. Rather than imply a comprehensive, current list, the examples below show what can be said with confidence from documented offers and rewards.
Documented examples—and what they do and don’t tell you
| Mount or offer | Expansion or context | What is documented | Availability takeaway |
|---|---|---|---|
| Llothien Prowler | Legion legacy reward | Blizzard named it among legacy mounts earnable through Legion Remix. | The announcement described Legion Remix as time-limited. It does not establish that the event is available now or that this route remains open. |
| Shackled Ur’zul | Legion legacy reward | Blizzard named it among legacy mounts earnable through Legion Remix. | Check current official event information before treating the Remix route as obtainable. |
| Violet Spellwing | Legion legacy reward | Blizzard named it among legacy mounts earnable through Legion Remix. | Its inclusion in a time-limited event announcement is not proof of present availability. |
| Tangled Dreamweaver | Dragonflight digital expansion bonus | Blizzard listed it among the digital bonuses for Dragonflight pre-purchase. | The announcement documents that historical offer, not a current way to claim it. |
| World of Warcraft mounts in the 30th Anniversary Mount Bundle | Promotional shop bundle | Blizzard said the bundle was available through January 6, 2025. | That end date has passed; the announcement is historical, not evidence of an active offer. |
Blizzard’s Legion Remix announcement is the basis for the three named legacy rewards and the event’s time-limited status. Its Dragonflight pre-purchase announcement documents Tangled Dreamweaver as a digital bonus. The 30th Anniversary Mount Bundle announcement gives the offer’s January 6, 2025 end date. These announcements document rewards and offers, not which mount is best.

How to build a genuinely useful personal shortlist
- Decide your scope. Say whether you are including the original game as well as expansion packs, and define the latest expansion covered. Do not leave readers to infer what “each” includes.
- Pick for a reason. For every expansion, explain the mount’s visual identity, story connection, recognition, or distinctive function. Keep that aesthetic judgment separate from the facts about where it comes from.
- Verify the source and current route. Check a current mount collection database or the relevant official expansion or patch page. Record whether it comes from a raid, achievement, quest, reputation, vendor, event, profession, PvP, or shop, and whether the route is still open.
- Describe the actual barrier. State whether the route calls for a group, a rare drop, a time-limited event, or another material requirement. Do not invent drop rates or imply a mount is readily farmable when the route has not been confirmed.
- Label availability as of a date. Event schedules and shop promotions can change. Blizzard’s historical announcements show why a past reward listing should not be presented as a current acquisition guide.
Availability can change, especially for events and shop offers
Legion Remix illustrates the difference between a mount being documented as an event reward and being obtainable today: Blizzard called the event time-limited while listing Llothien Prowler, Shackled Ur’zul, and Violet Spellwing among its legacy rewards. The 30th Anniversary bundle illustrates the same issue with a shop promotion: its stated availability ended January 6, 2025. A reader checking an older article should verify the current route before spending time planning a farm or expecting an offer to remain in the shop.
Shop and promotional mounts are real parts of the collection, but they should not be conflated with expansion-earned rewards. Blizzard’s shop announcement documents examples of in-game purchases, while not establishing the current shop lineup. See Blizzard’s shop announcement. The source is useful as historical context, not as a live catalog.

What the Dragonflight Collector’s Edition does—and doesn’t—include
Blizzard’s Dragonflight pre-purchase announcement also described physical Collector’s Edition contents: a hardback Art of Dragonflight book and a five-pin collector set. Those are Warcraft memorabilia; they are not physical versions of the in-game mount or a guide to choosing or obtaining mounts. Treating a collector item as a tool for mount collecting would confuse two different kinds of purchase.
