The right choice still depends on desk space and whether you prefer cloth or a hard surface. Tom’s Hardware says its guide is based on testing dozens of pads; those rankings are its editorial judgments, not independent test results for this article.
Which gaming mouse pad should you buy?
For a straightforward cloth pad, Tom’s Hardware’s general-purpose recommendation is the SteelSeries QcK Heavy. Its tested Large version measures 450 × 400 mm and is 6 mm thick; the guide describes a micro-woven cloth surface, nonslip rubber base, and hand-washable surface. The QcK Heavy lineup is offered in Medium, Large, and XXL sizes. These specifications and the recommendation are reported by Tom’s Hardware.
If lighting is a priority, Tom’s Hardware recommends the Razer Firefly V2 Pro as its best RGB pad. The guide reports a hard micro-textured plastic surface, one size at approximately 355 × 255 × 3 mm, and 19 RGB zones. Because the official Razer page available here describes the distinct Firefly V2, not the V2 Pro, verify the exact Pro model’s current specifications before purchase.
How to choose a pad that fits your setup
Measure your usable desk area
Tom’s Hardware gives approximately 450 × 400 mm as a typical gaming-pad footprint. Larger mats can extend beneath both keyboard and mouse or cover most of a desk, but only if they lie flat and leave room for the rest of the setup. Measure the clear area where the pad will sit, including space needed for keyboard movement and cables; an oversized mat that buckles or hangs over an edge is a bad fit.

Choose the surface by feel
Cloth and hard surfaces differ in glide and resistance, and neither is universally best. Cloth is a sensible starting point if you want a softer surface; a hard pad may suit someone who prefers a firm surface and a different glide feel. Treat these as preferences to compare, not performance guarantees.
PC Gamer’s 2026 guide distinguishes three SteelSeries QcK Performance cloth surfaces: Smooth is nylon, Balance is slightly textured polyester, and Control is textured polyester. Its reviewer prefers Control for its resistance and stopping feel. Those are that reviewer’s impressions, not universal results; the guide also characterizes the range as expensive. Consider thickness, edges, care, and construction
Thickness affects how a pad sits against the desk and may matter if you prefer a cushioned surface or a low-profile edge. Check the exact model’s thickness and edge construction rather than assuming all cloth or hard pads are alike. Also consider cleaning: the QcK Heavy is described by Tom’s Hardware as hand-washable, but follow the maker’s care instructions for whichever pad you choose.

Is an RGB mouse pad worth it?
RGB is worth considering if lighting is part of your desk setup and you are comfortable with the extra hardware and software involved. Compare the number and placement of zones, how the edge is illuminated, the control software, and where the cable will run. More zones do not by themselves establish better tracking or a better surface.

Keep model names precise. Razer’s official page is for the Firefly V2, not the V2 Pro. Razer describes the V2 as a hard-surface pad calibrated for optical mouse sensors and lab-tested for tracking, with 19 lighting zones, a coated surface intended to balance speed and control, 3 mm thickness, and an anti-slip rubber base. Those are manufacturer claims for Firefly V2 only; they should not be transferred to the Pro. Razer also points to its Goliathus Chroma range for cloth pads with Chroma RGB.
