If playing official Zelda games is the priority, the alternatives are limited: Nintendo documents Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom editions for Switch 2, plus The Wind Waker through its GameCube Classics service. The Steam Deck OLED is a capable portable PC gaming handheld, but it is not a like-for-like Zelda platform; the available product information does not establish it as a way to play official Zelda releases.
So the best alternative depends on what you mean by “Zelda fan.” If you want Nintendo’s games and services, Switch 2 is the documented choice here. If you mainly want a handheld for PC games and are willing to use a different library, Steam Deck OLED is a distinct alternative—not a substitute for official Zelda access.

Which handheld is best if you want to play Zelda?
For the official Zelda games and Nintendo services covered here, Switch 2 is the only verified option. Nintendo lists Switch 2 editions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom, with performance upgrades and support for the Nintendo Switch App’s game-specific ZELDA NOTES service. Nintendo also lists The Wind Waker in the GameCube Classics lineup for Switch 2 owners with a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. Nintendo’s Switch 2 overview and its feature details describe those offerings.

Steam Deck OLED belongs in the conversation only if you want portable PC gaming rather than Nintendo’s Zelda ecosystem. Valve describes it as a handheld PC and publishes its hardware specifications, but those specifications do not establish official compatibility with any particular Zelda game. Do not buy it expecting an officially supported way to play Nintendo’s releases.

How Switch 2 and Steam Deck OLED differ
The devices have different libraries and hardware trade-offs. The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from an independent head-to-head test. Steam Deck OLED configurations listed by Valve have 512 GB or 1 TB of storage; Switch 2 has 256 GB of internal storage.
| Factor | Nintendo Switch 2 | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Game ecosystem | Nintendo releases, documented Switch 2 Zelda editions, and compatible Switch games. Nintendo | Portable PC gaming. The cited product information does not establish official access to Zelda releases. Valve |
| Handheld display | 7.9-inch LCD, 1920 × 1080, HDR10, and VRR up to 120 Hz. Nintendo | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280 × 800, up to 90 Hz. Valve |
| Battery information | A comparable runtime figure is not established by the cited sources. | 50 Wh battery; Valve estimates 3–12 hours of gameplay depending on content. Valve |
| Storage | 256 GB internal; expandable with compatible microSD Express cards. Nintendo | 512 GB or 1 TB on the OLED models listed. Valve |
A larger screen, OLED panel, or higher refresh-rate ceiling does not by itself determine which device looks better in every game. The display figures describe different resolutions and panel types; they are not a direct image-quality verdict. Likewise, Valve’s battery estimate varies with content and should not be treated as a measured comparison against Switch 2.

What to check before replacing or upgrading a Switch
Confirm your existing games
Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible physical and digital Nintendo Switch games, but some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. Check Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information for games you rely on rather than assuming the entire Switch library works identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsPlan for the right storage card
Switch 2 requires microSD Express for additional game storage. Conventional microSD cards can be used only to view screenshots and videos captured on Nintendo Switch; they do not serve as Switch 2 game-storage expansion. Nintendo explains the restriction in its microSD Express support information.

Price depends on where and when you shop
Nintendo announced US launch suggested retail prices of $449.99 for the Switch 2 system and $499.99 for a Mario Kart World bundle in 2025; those are launch prices, not a current or global quote. Nintendo Australia lists a standard Switch 2 suggested retail price of AU$769.95 in Australia and NZ$969.95 in New Zealand on its regional product page. Check Nintendo Australia’s page for that regional listing, and verify current local pricing and availability before buying. Valve’s product page lists Steam Deck OLED configurations, but pricing varies by market and should also be checked locally: Steam Deck OLED specifications and availability.
